My Theory on Pikmin reproduction is that that is where their plant genes kind-of kick in, the Onion harvests the nutrients and uses part of that energy to creat spores, but that would mean that their reproduction is a combination of plant and animal reproduction. Plant/Fungus because of the spores and animal because some animals have the ability to reproduce sexually like the Onion, unless the Onions are female and the pellets are some kind of pollen from male Onions
