The self titled album has a few real winners lyrically, like Do better, Musically like Eloise, and both like Ahh...Men. All in all its decent, but it cant compare to the old stuff.
The album due in fall 2011 sounds like a real winner. max is preaching "going back to his roots" and "will be darker then ever". Look out world!
btw anyone know anywhere to find downloads of presidential suite, thoughts on a liberal education, sappy, but a fleeting illness, and joel on other planets? these are all i have left as far as i know.
i definitely agree on letting it grow on you. it starts out not great, but the more you listen to it, the more you like it. one of the more appreciable aspects of in defense of the genre is the complexity of the actual music. i still notice new riffs and solos on guitar and other instruments in the background, and i've been listening to it for a couple years.
It's not, it is actually really good. You probably listened to all the songs once or twice then gave up. Well, almost all of SA's songs take a few listens to really get into them and you are a Idiot whore with no taste
wish their new stuff was this good.. Seriously, I knew deep down when they said their new album was "about their relationship with god" that it would be wretched by comparison to their old stuff.. but listening to that crap just made me like their old stuff more..
First time I've ever heard this song, and it's amazing. I'm assuming this is from before "....Is A Real Boy". They haven't produced anything like this since then. "In Defense of the Genre" and the songs I've heard off the new album just seem to be missing something. I still have faith though.
In Defense was really cool you just have to have the taste for artistic growth, but it was also not really about the band so much as it was about paying tribute to their influences.
It was kind of an odd group project too, they had alot of guest singers and stuff.
Their newer album coming out will be more about them. But it probably won't sound as close to punk as their old old stuff.
Yeah, I had seen the interviews about influences and such I thought that was neat, but I didn't like the album. And I have nothing against artistic growth, I just didn't see any growth in it. I thought the lyrics were a bit more juvenile, the ryhmes were a bit more forced, and the vocals lack a certain power they had before. But you know, I'm just complaining I suppose.
for growth i was speaking more of the music rather than what mister bemis was doing.
i still liked alot of the lyrics though, in defense had alot of pent of anger in it, but it was a twist on what they had been doing prior so yeah it was different.
i actually had to let it grow on me because i didn't like it much at first either but now i think its fucking awesome.
I've heard it has to grow on you, perhaps I just have to give it more time but I'm not sure I want too haha. Oh well, I'm happy listening to ...Is A Real Boy over and over.
They aren't masquerading as one. They fall in between a lot of different genres and are very much influenced by punk music, but don't claim to be "hardcore punk." They are what they are, and I love them for it.
Though i believe that you're a little right due to a few of his songs, i don't believe that he's lost touch with the iarb at all with tracks like have at thee and this is f**king ecstacy. he just feels like he needs to tell his story in a different way.
I am patiently waiting the new album, though he states his songs to be more pop-ish. But at the same time catchy.
though i can agree some of his songs are bad, i wouldn't say 80% are bad. I actually really liked in defense, its just that he had too many songs. if he had cut the 2 discs into 1, picking out all his best, it would've been a worthy successor to iarb. If 80% of what he did was bad, he wouldn't be making much money, let alone hanging on to all his fans, would he?
ya this is off of a 2 song demo i got 7 or 8 years ago when they came to town...it was paired with an old version of woe (the optimist).....really good song, its a shame they didnt put it on an album
I like the other demo more, sounds more angry.

I don't mean to be accusatory, but did you replace the beginning? It sounds very different from other versions, and from the rest of the song.

max bemis needs to sing like this on every song
ikilledhannahmontana 2 years ago 3
His voice is just amaxing here. I wish he used it more often. I like the softer stuff, but I definetly would like more of this.
And when did Max get married? I just discovered this. To Sherri from Eisley. What a grand couple.
