Its missing the crunch, sounds too clean. People dont understand what Rick Rubin was trying to do, was making it sound like it was teeetering on the edge. There is nothing wrong with the way it sounds, fuck, ride the lightning sounds like it was rcorded in a bathroom but noone seems to care about that!
@bobjackson85 Panning guitars hard left and right is used quite bit when recording. Overdubs can be panned a little closer to center to separate them, but I think this sounds pretty cool for a remix project. I like the way the regular album sounds. Brick wall compression that gets added during mastering kills dynamics and pushes everything up front, but for this album, i think it works most of the time.
I fuckin hate people like this, Metallica makes their best music since Justice/Black Album and they bitch about the quality. Be happy they actually made a great album.
we have a bunch of whiners and complaniers, its metallica this is one of their best albums, yea of course their not gunna sound like master of puppets because that was almost 20 years ago, their still kicking ass tho
This is freakin' awesome, yet so depressing at the same time. If only "name" could do the rest of the songs, just as an alternative DM for fans who don't like the original mix.
I guess this is the *third* version of broken, beat & scarred out there. Maybe in ten years it will be "remastered", and sound worse than before :D
well you are definately when it comes to music editing but i do prefer the original...and everyone that thinks that the crappy producing on this album is rick rubin's fault is 100% wrong...it was not engineered by rick rubin..the guy who mixed and mastered it just knew it sounded terrible and kept his name off of him... and now rick rubin is getting blamed, which sucks cause rick rubin is amazing
I've heard both version i downloaded the guitar heroe version in my opinion that version just sucks the energy out of the album when listen to the official it's loud awesome and you can hear everything, yes it's slightly distorted but it doesn't ruin. The guitar heroe version is just boring and I think Rick rubin is a great prfoducer just listen to reign in blood and say otherwise. People just complain too much just enjoy the fucking you dumbfucks
fuck remixes. listen to it some good quality hifi, i.e. several thousand pounds worth of it. sounds the fuckin bollocks. this album is sooo good it would sound mint on walkman speakers with your head in a fuckin bucket!
Sounds way too tinny and "amateurish." Like..I know I'm listening to fan remix.
Sound quality complaints on DM are so overblown. The majority who are complaining are only doing so because they read on the internet about it. It's ridiculous.
I think Death Magnetic is Metallica better than ever. The work they've done on some of their songs, especially Cyanide, just blows me away. They run like four different songs together on that track and it comes together in a sound that we've never before heard from Metallica.
I think they've successfully reinvented their sound with Death Magnetic, and oldschool "fans" just can't handle that. It doesn't matter though because the more you listen to Death Magnetic, the better it sounds, as you hear more of the nuance you didn't hear before, and begin to realize how immaculately constructed each track is. Breathtaking, really. I think once people take the time to listen to this album, they'll come around.
i hope there is another album they can put out. i love metallica. i just never got into kill em all but i love everything else! i love st anger too. idont give a shit what people have to say about st anger i think its great..
dude thank god someone that likes st.anger, wtf its a great album with incredible riffs, ok the drums don't sound good and all that, there's no solos but....is it necesary to include solos ALWAYS¿¿ I don't think so..look at grind music, napalm death, canni9bal corpse, they don't have solos in every song and they're awesome. People just talk shit about st.anger cause evryone does, fuck them.
St anger was well...bad..but not as bad as people say it is.shitty snare was a disaster and no solos basically was just trendy but i really cant blame bob rock for that. There are a couple songs on that album i bang my fuckin head to all the fucking time but it's not a great album.
@signofthehammer Agreed. The lack of solos arguement is weak at best, some of the best music in the world has no guitar solos and the trend they speak of lies within nu-metal, which st. anger is NOT. Obviously these people have never heard of COC and others in that genere. The riffs in My World and All Within My Hands are clearly not Linkin Park and Korn based.
i know how u feel the first time i heard the judas kiss and cyanide i was like wtf???!!! en then one week later is headbanging like i have not done before :p these songs grow on you for some reason
Not that i dont like it, i love it and its the only band i like. But they fucked up the cd with the sound. They recorded it on max, so the quality is really downgraded.
I agree, too much reverb and too slick, lost all it's power and crunch..cliff said it best when he said he wanted to make an album that sounded like their live sound, dry and in your face and not so much reverb like on kill and ride. Hence puppets and justice for all was born. This just sounds manufactured. im sorry but the criticism of the cd quality is way overly exaggerated, it sounds fine.
that actually does sound sweet! nice job dude...but its all about the live shows now and the next cd i dont see them giving much of a fuck about everyone crying because of the sound issues! im just glad they made some kick ass songs after st anger!....
i dont know if it is my 2.1 sound system, BUT, next time, the audio channel for the voice of james is just a little bit like "radio" stuff, you know, you have to clean it more, or just wave down the sound of it.
But its good man! i cant do better! its just a simply comment right?
This sounds good. I wish they mixed it better. I didnt really care for thier choice of distortions either. I dig the 80's crunch thats all over puppets.
I have to say, from a musician's and mastering standpoint, this song is indefinitely better in this mix. There are a great number of subtle chord changes and note progressions that you can't very well notice because the mix on the original leaves it feeling underdeveloped and monotonous.
You can't notice the distortion in the CD version if you BLAST IT, it was meant to be played loud, VERY loud, not quietly...c'mon, its fuckin METAL!! its meant to be played loud
I did like the mixing, but I think you should've started with And Justice For All... seriously, dude. Tha band is the author of the album and the way they want it to be the final version IS THE FINAL VERSION, even if yours sounds better (and it does).
The fact the vocals are clear makes you see how bad James is, and on the original you might even think he is good. The dirty confuse at times sound is all part of it, it improves the listening, it´s not like St. Anger where it was real shit really, this time it´s dirty but good.
The album sounds the way it should sound for a thrash album, this version might be more clear on instruments and etc. and a more heareble voice whatever, but it didn´t improve on the experience of listening to the it as a whole, actualy this version made me get bored at this song.
The CD version is much better... cleared the drums, but fucked up the guitars! All the Death Magnetic's "Guitar Hero" mixing are too clear, awful to listen out of GH. The original versions are much better.
yes the drums are clear more than the original but.....I like more the original...I don't know why....here the guitar it doesn't sound so clear...so the original ...better..........but this is good too...god job;)

huge fail on the rythmn guitar volume when the solo kicks in, you can clearly notice the volume goes down...
Please people, stop ruining Death Magnetic's personality! Every Metallica album has one, many people complained about St Anger but its a great album with a great personality mix wise...
Listen to both versions, alternating from one to another, and if u don't see the difference go to an otorrinolaringologist. This one is so much clean. Not to say that this saved the album but... it is better.
for all of you complaning about the guitar volume in this one: the guy remixed it using 6 channels, 2 of them being already jammed into one channel (drums and vocals); you can't have a high guitar volume in a mix where the drums and vocals are on top of everything, cuz if you do that, then you'll have the original DM mix (lol). If he put the guitar on top of it, then the drums/vocals should have been lower, which would sound odd to a metal/rock record.
Things like this makes me wonder why there are just jerks working and earning money for low quality service, while one single dude does it 100000x better, and gets no money for the well done work.
everything sweet, but the bass...you are not meant to be touched by the bass with metallica...is in james fist that their power relies on...thought that this was pretty clear to everyone, but fuck me..i was wrong!
cut this awful bass off and keep the rest of the changes!
loved it!! great portfolio for you and a great song finally mixed in a way we can hear! I loved the new songs, but I cannot listen to them because of the sound quality! please do the same with the other tracks!
Wow, a mix that actually has breathing room. And you can hear each time the guitars are picked. What is wrong with liking what music used to be and not where it is at now. I just don't get why people would rather music sound like it does now compared to 10-20 years ago! I can turn the volume up myself, THANKS!
The production of the CD makes the guitars sound like a cat giving an elderly man an enima. The drums sound like folgers cans and the bass is almost non audible. The GH Mix is amazing though. The CD gives me a headache when i listen to it(especially with headphones)
Words can't even describe how much I love this mix. It has alot more bottom, I can actually hear the masterful bass work in this song. And the snare isn't too prominent but it is when its needed. I'm on the verge of tears right now.

The levels was already peaking after the mixing, the mastering studio didn't have anything to do with it.
It's how Rick Rubin makes albums, listen to any of his later albums and they peak.

If he put the guitar on top of it, then the drums/vocals should have been lower, which would sound odd to a metal/rock record.

Things like this makes me wonder why there are just jerks working and earning money for low quality service, while one single dude does it 100000x better, and gets no money for the well done work.

Great job...
But I have to say this: 99% of the people complainin' to the sound of the album are the same people that download mp3 instead of buying the cd...
Ah, the irony of it all...

everything sweet, but the bass...you are not meant to be touched by the bass with metallica...is in james fist that their power relies on...thought that this was pretty clear to everyone, but fuck me..i was wrong!
cut this awful bass off and keep the rest of the changes!

Really?
I don't like it.
To clear for a THRASH METAL band!
The double bass part seems like a FAGGISH melodic metal bands.
Go listen Kill em' All!
Death Magnetic 1000x times better than this crappy version to hear in an iPod. Dude, go back to vynil era, coz there is the REAL music.
UwerBK 3 years ago
It just seems clear because the guiars were recorded properly , it's not crush like AJFA..Not fault of the mix, fault of Rick Rubin.
boredperson81 3 years ago
The drums are much clearer now. Congratulations, dude!

Wow, a mix that actually has breathing room. And you can hear each time the guitars are picked. What is wrong with liking what music used to be and not where it is at now. I just don't get why people would rather music sound like it does now compared to 10-20 years ago! I can turn the volume up myself, THANKS!

ehm.. what's wrong with the orriginal BBS? Or better yet the entire death magnetic?

The production of the CD makes the guitars sound like a cat giving an elderly man an enima. The drums sound like folgers cans and the bass is almost non audible. The GH Mix is amazing though. The CD gives me a headache when i listen to it(especially with headphones)

Words can't even describe how much I love this mix. It has alot more bottom, I can actually hear the masterful bass work in this song. And the snare isn't too prominent but it is when its needed. I'm on the verge of tears right now.
