  • Great vid man. Exactly what I was looking for, you just got a sub from me on this single vid.

  • Anything from Ryan Adams you should cover!

  • way too long and drawn out for such little material. couldn't hold interest in it, ended up learning by ear.

  • you are so so so incredibly sweet. thank you for this. ps awesome playing!

  • What's a lick?

  • I am very new to guitar. I couldn't quite catch the strum pattern. Would you mind telling me what it is?

  • well... it sounds like shit when I play it, but at least now I "understand" how to play. Thanks for breaking it down, great help! now I just have to work on it until my fingers bleed. Much oblige!

  • can someone please explain the strumming

  • round here-counting crows

  • That was great thanks. Can I ask why you use the Hendrix grip rather than just a straight barre chord?

  • @TheLastFraudster I think it's because of those pull off''s/hammer on's

  • thnx bro!

  • Nice job! I think the chorus is supposed to be half-time like the part right before it though.

  • Dude my thumb is to small to bar XD this is soo STUPID (not you my thumb xD)

  • You are so cute and make an awesome teacher thanks!

  • Hey I'd love for you to do a song from Patty Smyth called No Mistakes. Also a Kenny Loggins song called Please Come To Boston. This is I believe done fingerstyle and is so beautiful if done correctly. Your the man to see for this LOL. Thanks so much for considering. You rock!!!!!

  • I'm digging that guitar...because I have it. :)

  • I cant Hendrix grip because my low E on my acoustic is too far away from the edge of the fingerboard on my guitar. I need a new nut. :|

  • revelry - kings of leon, or damien rice - 9 crimes or justin timberlake - i think that she knows

  • Kate Heidke Miller song called Politics of Science. If you can post a lesson on that song, I will be most grateful!!! There are no tabs anywhere for that song. The only thing I can tell you is it is in dropped d. There is a vid on YouTube.

And may I just say; you're a great teacher and you should think about doing it for a living!

  • thanks, its a brilliant video, really helpful. perhaps you could try singing 'set the fire to the third bar' by snow patrol? has a brillaint female and male voice and its a beautfiul song.

  • Great pointers! Every time I attempted it it sounded like a simple lousy progression. Damien is a master at his craft. Some of his songs like Volcano have simple and common chord progressions but he's so masterfully creative that they sound incredibly fresh and original. Not to mention he has a million versions of them, all great. You've given enough for me to at least think i'll get something right, :). Thanks!

  • thanks~! love damien's work~!

  • Good vid.

  • thank you for the pointers. You're the best.

  • Hey man, great lesson. I kind of stumbled across this, but I'll definitely employ your instructions. Very easy and simple to follow. Some other songs you might try checking out - fun but not especially guitar-difficult - are songs by Third Eye Blind and some of those other 90's guys.

    Keep up the good work.

  • maybe you can sing something like matchbox 20 or maybe matt nathanson.

  • I find when I am playing this song I tend to slide my thumb with each note from the 4th to 5th fret when playing aminor and then hammering the first fret on E when playing F major. Don't know if anyone else uses that but its easier for me instead of hammering g string on a minor. Btw great video. Been trying to play by ear but this cleared it up. Thanks!

  • You're very welcome and thank you too! It's always great when others share their own tips and tricks for certain songs. Thanks for watching and thanks for contributing as well! Keep playin'

  • shayne, you're the man, im loving these lessons so far, i feel confident i can learn from these

(and im a beginner, therefore really crap)

so yeah, i think your lessons do the job

  • i seriously love you for this. like seriously. I can't even express myself for how thankful i am. this is seriously the best lesson i've ever seen period.

  • Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to check out some of my other videos as well :)

  • Ahoy! How about "Touch, Feel & Lose" by Ryan adams?

  • You're great! Thanks!

  • Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • What about mad world? By Gary Jules?

  • An excellent suggestion. Once upon a time I learned how to play it on piano, and perhaps I should again. Thanks for watching!

  • Really??!! That's Awsome!!!

  • how about learn from this mistake by down

  • enjoyed lesson, cheers

  • I second that =)

  • How about some Johnny Cash/June Carter or Grateful Dead from the Donna Godcheaux era- like your stuff man keep on keepin' on

  • Good thinking. I'll definitely check some things out and see what I think. Right now I've just been so caught up in Cardinology that I'm trying to put up lessons for several of the songs. It's a great CD

  • Love Damien Rice. I do have a question...Why is the Hendrix method necessary?

  • On the Fmaj chord he uses a hammer-on (0h2) on the G-string. If chording the "normal" way, this proves impossible (if you continue to hold the 1st frets on the B and high-E strings). Bringing the thumb over the top to hold the root F allows for the hammer-on without interference. In general, the "Hendrix Grip" simply allows the player more freedom of movement in the fretting hand, and reduces the workload asked of the index finger. You could get by without it, but it's such useful technique.

  • Also, it's how Damien Rice does it himself (though he may ditch the root in favor of the bass holding it instead), so I thought I'd teach it that way

  • Here's an idea outside the box. How about some Guitar Rag by Merle Travis. I know that it might be a lot to ask but I've been trying to figure that one out for years!!! And as a lesston it would even be greater!

    Take care!
