  • Do you see Joni watching, captivated?

  • brilliant cover ... ♡♡♡

  • Lauper dives to the bottom of this resin-ambered song and shoots pure electricity into the worm at the bottom of the bottle. Mitchell herself seems dizzy from the fumes.

  • @dancgear

Well said. I was there and I don't feel your comment overstates what took place, at all.

  • Yeah folks sometimes fact is fiction & fiction is fact. The Sillmarion is the Ainur's Genesis. The Kaballa tells us Lillith was affilated with Sammael but thought to be Adam's wife but Adam took Eve has his wife & eventually Satan gets into the picture. Lucifer lurks & they tried to make them one but only in bloodline.

  • For those of you who do not know Gandolf of LOR is a Maia, although he is said to be a young angel of about 2,000 years??

  • She is a Maia White but who came first her or Jorn Lande? There is likely a cross there somewhere! Enoch's family....

  • She fits into the lesser Elizabethians locked in with 1st string & Mary etc. She is the saving grace of that mess. While the war of the Angel's wared even the Maia's & Aryeon faced off without Lucifer's Ainur & Valar being seen....

  • I wonder how many ppl realize that this Cyndi Lauper in her pure form. How many of you realized she was not of this planet? Cyndi is a Maia Angel. Yeah a true bonefide Angel. Not an Ainur, Valar or Ayreon angel but a Maia. However her bloodline may cross among them & earth etc. It is quite feasible the Maia lent the Mayan calendar??

  • Seriously Joni I think you have to do that collaboration album all those artists are diverse & the mix well I am sure I will have several sound engineers & record exec's suffering from insomnia over the potential. I bet a few labels would fight over it!!

  • Joni better make that a double set disk or more. Seriously I think all those artist together would be potentially wildly good!

  • Heck toss in Crosby Stills & Nash & Joni may have a way cool album. Lets make it wild & add the Dream Academy & Smashing Pumpkins to that list. Sounds like a whacked out awesome brainstorm of an album to me.

  • Joni's music comes back into fashion every 15 years we dust it off again. Cyndi's most popular tracks were the sound track to my high school years. Music is lacking these days & I wish Joni would try some newer collaborations. I personally would like to see what she could do with the Eagles & with Paul Simon. I think it could maybe be a great collaboration.

  • That really is an under appreciated true Gem. I like this performance & Cyndi's version better because I think it captured the emotion of the song better & painted a visual that added greater depth to the song. Yet one of my fond memories is going to my local library & checking out Joni Mitchell CD's long after the punk rock faded & the 80's rock was gone for that retro folk mellow. Some classics are forever & there only was one Joni she was unique!

  • This is fabulous!I love it!go Cyndi!

  • wow. goose bumps.

  • great go cyndi !

  • Cyndi is AMAZING! And so coooool! Love her!!!

  • am i the only one who hates it when folks flag a comment as spam when it's clearly not, just because they don't like what the commenter had to say?? it's like they don't believe in freedom or something...

  • Magnifique interprétation de ce succès de Joni Mitchell! La voix chaude de Cindy, le rythme sensuel et les arrangements donnent une nouvelle dimension à cette pièce. À écouter et à ré-ré-ré-écouter :)

  • I had never heard this song before Cyndi Lauper did it, and I have loved it so much. I think I heard Joni's version and didn't like it.

  • Is an so emotive version...Cyndi you are great...simply amazing

  • One of the best female vocals of our time!

  • Her best cover since her Blue Angel days. Gives me chills every time. Love 'em both.

  • JONI IS LOVING IT

  • Is Joni sitting in the audience?

  • She has a great ear

  • I like Cyndi's version! I sing this song on my Emilydogcat channel.

  • I love her leadership, 2 things happened during this song that u mite not be aware of, she had trouble with her ear monitor and to top it off at fhe 5 minute mark of this song the band went to the wrong chord and she turned around and got them on board again what control without a melt down.

  • CYNDI LAUPER THE QUEEN OF THE VOICE OF THE 80s!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I remember seeing this on TV and how stunned I was that cyndi lauper could take theis joni michell classic make it her own and make it give me goosebumps at the quality of the performance. just stunning

  • I don't have words to describe how magnificent Cyndi Lauper is...

  • I do, but it would take a year and a half.

  • One century, perhaps. =)

  • hello cyndiscorners! you are right, there are no words!

  • cyndi is perfect... she is a true artist.. and she definitely know how move my heart inside my chest!... she is the only artist i know who can do that! her voice her simplicity, she means everything! i love u so much ur an inspiration 4 a lot of ppl! including me!... i love u sweet illusion!

  • Down- tempo, powerful tribute to Joni. It's easy to forget what a great voice Cyndi has. As cliche as it sounds, Cyndi really did use her voice as an instrument.

  • I sang this song with 2 "Nyew Joisey goils", Rosalind and Sarah, when we spent a 1973 night sleeping on Crete's Matalla beach after exploring the caves and partying at the Mermaid cafe Joni Mitchell made famous with this song. This song is so true, so real. And I love how Joni mists up as she watches "Nyew Yawkeh" Cyndi Lauper sing this classic in this video. And damn, Cyndi looks and sounds like Rosalind... and thank you Rosalind for introducing me to Sylvia a week later in Athens...

  • The thing that set Cyndi apart from all in her genre for me is that she's a real musician not a rent-a-lead-singer. Only a real musician can get inside of a song to convey the proper emotion. That's Cyndi.

  • absolutely agree!

  • When will the people recognize how talented is Cyndi Lauper?

    Amazing, full of emotions, excellent!

  • Amazing, moving performance!

  • This is a perfect performance, Cyndi is a great singer!!!

  • I'll tell you what....this is a incredible cover. Cyndi is great talent.

  • Hey - i resemble that remark!!!!

I'm joking fer feckssake. This is wonderful, Joni is happy... let's call a truce, eh? Peace.

  • This performance is the first time I fully appreciated Cyndi Lauper. Funky, sexy, avant-garde, wonderfull!!! People that project onto Joni's reactions as being disapproving are nuts. Watch her groove right from the beginning. As per her "comment" to the person sitting next to her. Who fucking cares@! Always people wanting to find fault with Joni. Incredible. As a result of seeing this I bought Lauper's "At Last," and play it often. She is amazing.

  • Her cover of "if You Go Away" was excellent as well.

  • I've worked out what Joni says @ the 4 min mark...."don't bother getting up.. you're sitting on my hand". Yes?

  • Actually she is singing the lyrics from the song: Playing that scratchy rock and roll....

  • I am not very patient, am I? See below.....

  • Does anybody know exactly what Joni says to her companion at the 4 minute mark? Pray, tell me. And soon.

  • Stop pinching my bum?

  • @originaldivinylsfan Silly people. She's singing along with Cyndi!

  • Cyndi siempre cita a Joni como una gran inspiración. Aqui le devuelve un homenaje tremendamente inspirado. Una versión majestuosa de Carey, amo esta canción. Cyndi... puro puro talento.

  • Such a unique take on this Joni classic. The look on Joni's face betrays disapproval, yes? Cyndi is captivating... I'm exploring more, definitely. Ideas, anyone?

  • I see intense concentration. The merging of Joni's early music combined with the jazzy low of her later wirks fused immaculately by Cyndi is thought provoking and captivating.

  • Every time I have seen Cyndi Lauper perform in the past several years I am beyond captivated at just how wonderful an artist she is. Rock on Cyndi!

  • brilliant!! she deserves much more success! her new album is awesome!!

  • wow!

is this whole concert availabel somewhere?

  • No, unfortunately, it is not. I have been trying since 2000 to get a complete DVD of the tribute special and TNT did not release it.

  • I'm part of that contingent, dude LOL but I really can't stand processed club dance. I'm one of THOSE gays that likes music written by the artist...

  • This version is even better than the original, and I love Joni!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think this is fantastic! One of the best tracks on Blue and I think she's doing it justice. She has a wonderful voice! I'm not feeling her comeback however - she's trying to try her hand at house music =o(

  • yeah, i think she's doing it for her gay contingent lol.

  • I saw Cyndi Lauper backstage at the Tony Awards in 2006 and told her that I thought this was the stand out performance at the Joni Mitchell tribute. I hope she believed me because while I was never a big fan of hers, I really meant it. This is very far out.

  • I like this version of Joni's song.

  • Cyndi's always been a great singer.

  • mmmmmmmmmmm........delicious!

  • How stunning is that. It's not only delightful to re-discover Joni Mitchell's genius through (lyrics here in particular) but, to be so lucky to have another strong & artistic woman interpret the song in her own passion like Cyndi does, is incredible. What a treasure this interpretation is, her voice is most beauteous here.

  • Amazing, moving performance! The dancing from 2:32 - 2:45 is coolest choreography i have ever seen in my entire life. 8-)

  • notelove2 - a great performance of a great song - it's amazing how it can change when sung at a different tempo!

  • I'm gobsmacked

    BLOOOOBIRDS

  • Of many great performances at the Joni Mitchell Tribute concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom, this performance by Cyndi Lauper stole the show! Thank you so much for sharing this exceptional video with us. She is so extraordinary as a live artist.

  • the most riveting live performance i have ever seen. i've been searching forever for a copy of the tribute so that i could hear it again. thank god for youtube. cindi missed her calling because it was never pop music. this is amazing.

  • So underated as an artist!!!, has an amazing truly unique bsck catalogue i love her voice, it sounds so pure and full of emotion. i wonder what would have happened if madonna hadnt stole her crown???, she could have been the biggest female singer, but i'll guess we will never no?!? ;( x

  • Inspired

  • I will always remember this night. I had the unbelievable luck in working with Cyndi and sharing some of her insights in this performance. When she dances in the middle of the song she says she was "spirit" dancing to find the center of the song. I will never forget her singing the song back to me in the limo on the way to the after party at the China club. Thank you for a night that I will always cherish Cyn.

  • truly expressive'''she defines a true artist...great job cyn''...

  • I thought this was the best performance of the night! Outstanding!

  • I always come back to this performance - Cyndi has some REAL highlights - but this is among my favs. I realize it is a Joni song - yet another terrific song. I just really love the way Cyn sings it - just beautiful. As far as the performance - everything just fell in place for Cyndi this night.

  • tingles all over, like butterflies all inside.. absolutely BEAUTIFUL ..just so amazing .. cyndi is a legend .. adore her. one of the only covers ive heard that in my opinion is better than the original version. amazing.

  • yes, agree maritree... Cyndi put her heart in this truly truly...you can see it in her face, esp. at the end of her performance...bring tears. A fine cover... And...it was all for her love and appreciation of Joni, such a fine, fine artist, and the beautiful, timeless song, Carey...

  • I met Cyndi Lauper in a bar not long after she did this tribute performance. I told her how kick ass it was and she graciously thanked me, explaining that someone had cancelled out at the last minute and she was asked to fill in. She also said she doesn't remember being on stage as she went into a "zone". The producers should be greatful, as Cyndi gave the most unforgettable performance of the night!! She blew everyone away....standing ovation!!

  • I saw her do this a few nights ago in Niagara Falls. She went into classic Cyndi zone-mode, dancing the same way she is here. It was really cool. :)

  • you are so lucky woahannablue! i saw her before but not performing carey! she is the best. the world should see that performance!

  • omg u met cyndi lauper she was sweet!¿¿¿ she is amazing and she is so cool! and kind with fans!.... she is simply the best and this performance is one of her best so far...! thaxs for sharing ur story!.. how it was i mean ur meeting!?^^

  • Typical power live performance from Cyn...so hot!

  • Cyndi, what an amazing performance; this was exceptional; Cyndi's cover of "Carey" and k.d lang's version of "Help Me" were the only two to get a standing ovation during the tribute, well besides Joni, yet someone said "Just Say No" and didn't put it on the Tribute compilation cd, what a shame. It was the best and k.d lang were the best covers on that show. Thanks for putting it on youtube. Cyndi's phrasing and those 'pipes'; this is 'a must' on some future Joni Mitchell cd compilation!

  • Cyndi is just too much! What an artist. I remember seeing this when it aired on t.v. and she blew me away. It was wonderful to see it again, thank you for posting it.

  • Simply the Best!

  • LMAO!! The dancin she does at 2.40 is CRAZY!!

One of my fave all time cover versions tho, STUNNING!

  • i have always loved this cover. go, Cyn, go!

  • Ditto on the OMG. That gal can sang and Joni groovin too much...

  • Oh my god! I did not know Cyndi Lauper could sing like that! She hits higher notes than Joni did! This is the best vocal cover of a Joni song I have ever heard. I'd love to hear Cyndi sing "River," or "My Old Man." She certainly has the pipes for either.

  • lol even Girls Just Wanna Have fun required really high notes, it's just that it isn't taken seriously because it's a silly pop song.

  • please let there be a copy of this in dvd! the tune was simple yet very very touchy indeed!

  • MY GOD! What a cover!

  • Simply the best female singing performance I have ever seen on TV. The arrangement for this beautiful song was pristine

  • has anyone ever mentioned anything about them releasing this on DVD? i remember watching it and later finding an mp3 of teh performance but i'd love to get a permanant copy....

  • Great to see Joni enjoying this, she is not known for showing emotion at other people singing her songs. The vastly underrated Cyndi not only demonstrates that amazing voice again but also shows how powerful understatement can be. Mariah has never shown this much emotion.

  • Classic performance by Cyndi Lauper. Well deserved standing ovation @ the end. She deserves much more success!

  • lovely !

  • just beautiful! Amazing performance by Ms. Lauper!

  • I love this version of the Joni classic. It reminds me of this place in my heart where yesterday seems like tomorrow and then you remember its already past.
