Hello. I'm a heavy metal musician. Guitarist moreso. And I was given a Stradivari copy for free. I don't know much about it or how to even play it but it's horribly out of tune and I think it needs new strings. I don't know what it's worth or if it's worth sinking a few hundred bucks into it fr work such as a setup and rehairing the bow and strings. Help?
@broodwar1 It may not need anywhere near a couple of hundred bucks to get it playable. Strings can be obtained for $25. But, if the strings are not old and cruddy, they may be useable. Strad copies are common. Some play well. Rehairing a bow can be $45. You can also buy a bow for that much. If the stick is warped to the side, get a new bow.
Hi, my daughter is a fiddler and sometimes we get to a show and the tuner is dead and no other instruments available. She usually does her best by ear and then wigs it. What would be the best way to tune the G string and then tune the other strings to it? Thanks and keep up the good work.
@thegreenfiddler1 - If there is another tuned instrument available you can get a note from that. On a guitar the highest pitched string is an E note / same as the fiddle E - it is tuned EADGBE. From a banjo you could get a G note from the middle string - it is tunes GDGBD. Mandolin notes are all the same as fiddle notes on the same strings - it is tuned GDAE, just like the fiddle!
im new to the fiddle and now that i understand how to get the instrument in tune i have a question. How tight or loose should the bow be? does this affect the sound? and how much rosen should i use on the bow?
I rosin the bow about every other day. If you get a strong sound, you have enough rosin. If clouds of rosin dust rise from your playing, you have too much.
If the bow slides over the string without making much sound, add more rosin.

The tune I play at the end is Shortnin Bread. That's the same one I use in Learn to Play Fiddle in One Lesson.
