If I can just say, that after 20 minutes of watching your videos, I feel like I've learned more than my teacher has taught our class in the last 2 weeks. THIS, Ladies and Gentleman is a TEACHER.
I am a mature student studying alone in a remote area, no classes etc. Professor Jason your videos are the best for me! Spanish is fully explained in a clear concise way and I have progressed so well with your help. Thank-you so much keep up the work please!!
im in university and u taught me this in like 9 minutes, i have been going to class 2 hours a week for 3 months on this and i got it better from you, seriously why am i paying my prof 900$ for this????
the word "que" meant "that"? i know that i cant just translate it word per word but in english you can say "I want you to speak spanish" so would "Yo quiero tu hablas espanol" be OK?
@anormalnerd .....el "por" se podría decir si partimos de la oracion "la cancion fue escrita por...." pero aqui en latinoamérica tambien decirmos "DE"
I really wish my professor was as good as you are at teaching! haha, I understand it so much better on here! Thanks so much! I'm so glad I found this video.
@TheIndianaJames Check out my facebook community, I just posted there on accents. But to answer your question, no, not really... I know what you're trying to do there, but Spanish does not allow it... ther verbs in both clauses have to be conjugated. In Portuguese you can do something similar to what you're suggesting (I have a video on that: personal infinitive) to avoid the subjunctive. Thanks for watching!
Another well-explained lesson. I am always so thrilled when i actually use the Spanish subjunctive in a real life situation. To master Spanish verbs, I created a board game called Verb It. It's fun and a great way to practise verbs without pulling out your hair. There's a Verb It video here on Youtube that you can check out. There's also a good online site with verb quizzes: verbitgame. Buena suerte carolina f
Si tú te vas, ti tú te vas, mi corazón, se morirá... Thats the song which is in the introduction. Its a good clasic "merengue" from Dominican Republic
Thanks for explaining this. You make it so easy to understand the subjunctive. With such a detail, I would have never grasped the idea, if I was using a textbook.
soo... this stuff is only used to ask for something? im going to mexico as a exchange student and they don't teach me this until spanish 4 and im in spanish 2
from what i understand of spanish, reflectively it reminds me of old english. if you study it carefully, you wil see what i mean. take the subjunctive for example...if i say no creo que PUEDA, pueda its like saying i dont think i MAY be able..in the us we dont talk like this very often but you can hear people speak like that..but its much more common with european english. present subj. expresses the questionable "MAY" in english, or a command that you would say to someone.
Hi Jason, I'm learning Spanish by myself by watching Spanish programs such as telenovelas. I can understand much of the language but I can't speak it because I don't talk to anyone in Spanish. I would like to thank you for these lessons because they really help me towards my goal and will help me when I hopefully visit Spain and Latin America.
if someone was to want skip the subjunctive, would it be the same to say "Ella me necesita escribir" as "Ella necesita que yo escriba"? It just seems easier
Unfortunately, no... there really is no workaround when it comes to the subjunctive in Spanish... by the way, your example would translate as she need to write to me :)
Hola Jason. Claro que tú eres un buen profesor. Aprendo español para hobby y un amigo que me ayuda con Skype me dice que nececito aprender el subjantivo. Naturlamente he buscado un video tuyo porque sabe tan bien tus videos son. Como ScientiaVeritasEtLux, quiero saber otras situos en que necicitamos usar el subjantivo. Así que: "Yo quiero que tu hagas mas videos sobre el subjantivo." ¡Muchisimas gracias por la ayuda! -Jeff (Correcciones siempre bienvenidos.)
Your Spanish learning videos are great. I especially like your use of the white board since it helps to be able to visualize each word. Please continue to make these because they really help augment my beginning classes and the learning I'm doing in parallel on my own. I would really like to see some additional videos with practical examples of typical sentence structures. Thanks for taking the time to make. Regards from Tucson.
the thing that is kind of tricky for me is all of the other things that can trigger subjunctive use. Like, "Es probable que. . . .", or "Ojalá que. . . .", etc. Also, the imperfect subjunctive is kind of tricky for me. I don't know why. It seems pretty cut and dry when I read it in a text book, but....i don't know.
hey erik, welcome back! como has estado? I am planning to add three or four more lessons on the other kinds of subjunctive triggers, but it you are really curious, e-mail me and I have some handouts I'd be happy to send you! Jason
Oi Marcio, pois é... The whole concept of the subjunctive is very trick for English speakers, since we usually do not use it in a recognizable way in modern English. However, all of this is almost identical for Portuguese, which is one reason I decided I could maybe learn your language! ;-) abraços, amigo
And the similarity of the grammatical mechanisms in both languages is something that I capitalize greatly on here! :) (getting to know a little bit of Spanish is a nice extra :)) Another very pleasant lesson -- very clear and ordered. One gets a feeling one could learn Spanish without taking any effort! :)
PS Polish uses subjunctive mood for situations like those presented here: it's constructed with the past form of the second verb.
YOU ARE MY SAVIOR TONIGHT. I've been stuck on Spanish homework all night, but you've really helped me out. Thank you :)

Jason,
I was wondering if this is a way to get around the subjunctive. Your example is:
Yo quiero que tu hables espanol.
Couldn't one say:
Yo quiero para ti hablar en espanol.
Sorry about the missing accents. I haven't figured that part out yet.

Deberías haber enseñado los mandatos antes de que enseñaste el subjuntivo porque solamente es la forma "usted" cuando una persona traducelo.
