Linda was a vision here: Her Victorian, porcelain-doll features belie the growls and purrs in her ample, womanly voice. A lot of red-blooded males found her hard to resist. In that retro-40's dress and ankle socks, she's rather like a little girl playing dress up in mommy's clothes and lip-singing to a much older woman's record! Love it!
@greg55666 Yes, actually. Those cherubic dolls from the turn of last century; large eyes, full faces and tiny painted lips. She's always reminded me of those dolls, facially.
Linda Ronstadt is BAR NONE the finest interpreter of songs EVER in the history of recording artists using that unmistakably awesome voice of hers and applying it to ANY GENRE of music....she has a knack for taking someone else's song, adding her own flavor and spicing it up to produce a hit record, be it rock, country, easy listening, mariachi, contemporary classics, or pop - SHE'S THE BOMB! Notice the striking resemblance of her (early photos) with another rising pop sensation - Selena Gomez.
I always enjoyed her performances. She was fun until she started getting political on stage and then I lost interest- I was surprise how quickly at that. In my mind it was no longer entertainment it was propgandizing. This is from an ealier, better time.
@dilliphant3 hell...i still remember the see-thru dress on the cover of her "Hasten Down the Wind" album! Lets just say it was more than once or twice!

Ohh yeah Linda was So Very HOT n Sexy n Beautiful !!!!!! I always Love Linda !!!! But I gotta say I Hate when musicians and actors etc spout out stuff regarding politics...whether I agree with them or Not I just dont think they should go there at all. Honestly I could care less what Lindas political feelings are ... I love her for her Voice and her Beauty !!!!!
You know--- just as a passing thought= = I have always wondered if she had on panties here?? It was a known fact that she never wore panties all through the 70's- by her own admission. The way she flips that dress up a few times- we would almost be able to see---- grin YUMMY!
I'm a "die-hard" Linda fan and I love this song. It's a great performance by a woman with a truly one of a kind voice that was carefully self-trained into an instrument that could do amazing things musically. This song is a perfect example.
The real funny thing about this video is that although by today's standards, it's very tame and corny compared to what people will do, yet one can't help look at her in this and listen that growling wail she does so well and not walk away saying DAMN!
You know why she's so hot here, let alone just about her entire career: She always looked like a woman AND she knew sexiness was in the tease and not the act. Singers after her, like Madonna, fell over themselves taking the overtly sexual route to the point of absurdity. I'm not saying Ronstadt is a prude, but I'll say this: Looking at her here and comparing her visually to anything Madonna or anybody else has done, Linda's got it hands down. The words....Godess and Venus come to mind.
This video came out around the time that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was on "Saturday Night Live". The look of the two was so similar, that Julia even parodied Linda singing "What's New" during an SNL skit (either in '83 or '84, can't remember when).
Love this album. Saw her perform this album Universal Studios in the early 80's. She was in her prime I thought. Still one of, if not the best female vocals EVER!
Never heard this before, really grabs the eyes and ears ... That is one tricky time signature/rhythmic groove .. and Linda's bluesy singing/shouting reminds me of Bonnie Raitt .. nice !!

Yeah, she is sexy here. But after considering it I think it's so well done that it doesn't come across as sexual exploitation.
Yeah just watched it again. The dress alone makes it quite tame (polka dots), that's why I think it's done in good taste (wonder about those polka dots though, that's what threw me on first viewing; love is blind [to polka dots?] ha ha). Until she lifts it up that is. Ha ha. Nah, just joking, I think it's good, sexy but in a good way.
Jon Carroll wrote this song. He sang "Afternoon Delight" with the Starland Vocal Band in the 70s who won the Best New Artist Grammy that year. His latest CD won a bunch of Washington Area Music Awards (WAMMIES). She sounds great here.
Lind Ronstadt had been around for 17 years before this video came out going from folk to country to county-rock to rock to New Wave and then back to New-Wave influenced pop with this song. Her moves are more animated than her hippy days, but she performed this way in concert starting in 1977. She''s not channeling anyone here or doing a cheap imitation either. You can't imitate yourself. Der.
I have always loved Linda Big time, voice wise for me no one can compare, alot has been said r/t her political views, she also has said she never exploited her sexuality--right cant see that at all here--she is hot and she is showing the goods------sexy............
Like OMG x2!!! i never knew there was a vid for this song. it's the cats meow!!! linda rocks and Get Closer has some great cover tunes from that era. polished, like this video was in its day. what a talent, thanks linda!
Actually, it's just like the "Tell Him" video from the album. MTV2 played a long time ago and I recorded it. I didn't know there was a video for either of them!
She is great! She looks and reminds me of Patty Smythe from Scandal in this video.... or Patty Smythe looks like her?!? (Check out "Goodbye To You" video)
Either way, great voice, sexy look(smokin' hot for a mid 30s in '82), and perfect for the time (1982). Should've been a bigger hit than it was.
Uh...not exactly. Mick faced being too old for pop radio not rock stations. His rock career was never at risk for getting older.
For women it was absolutely different. As they matured fickle pop music fans stopped listening, and no loyalty existed from rock fans who always wanted younger & hotter women.
With the exception perhaps of Stevie Nicks, none of the rock women from the 1960s and 1970s lasted much beyond the early 1980s.
It's too bad that some of you can't separate art from politics . And although I am a big Stone's fan , Mick Jagger wishes he could sing half this good !! This is just a great song by a great artist . Nothing more . I don't agree with most of the political views put forth by the vast majority of the artistic community but it doesn't stop me from acknowledging the great work they do . After 40+ years as a professional musician myself I think I am somewhat qualified to make this judgement .
I am a musician, having played guitar for over 20yrs. I have never played pro (& have no desire to). I feel I am qualified enough to say that if an artist is going to use their art as a platform to espouse political views, I don't have to support them. Artists shouldn't attempt to alienate their a portion of their audience. In the golden age of Hollywood, artist kept silent out of respect for their fans. I support an artist right to speak freely & I also support my freedom to not support them.
I don't remember Mick looking hot in a red polka-dot dress, but I will search the web for that video. I would kinda expect more of that kind of activity from Bill Wyman, but who am I to say?
This ROCKS !! Linda R at her Saucy BEST . Eat your heart out Susan Tedeschi !! Linda even makes dancing in 7/4 easy . Thanks for this one . It always blows me away !!
It was this video at age 10 then made me look at teachers, bank tellers, tupperware saleswomen, housewives, and many others in their 30's and 40's look closer.
The 80s alternative & establishment critics including Rolling Stone, crucified Linda for not writing her own music even though that was the norm for 80s superstars. They also criticized her for being too old, even though male stars did not face the same prejudice. She got sick of the game and switched to different types of music because she knew she had the voice and talent to succeed, which she did. Even though she was never "in" again, she remained a respected artist and a household name.
Critics (of art, music or whatever) are envious losers. "Get Closer" was one of Linda's very best albums, one which I'd have to include in my "100 if I was stuck on an island" list. Talent endures, and the critics... were who, again?
She did jump the shark with the rock/pop scene after this. But immediately after she had three top 5 Big Band albums. Following these she had a huge country success "Trio" with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris. She then moved to big hits with Aaron Neville. She knew it was hard for women in rock & pop to sustain top 40 careers so she worked around it while her contemporaries, with the exception of Stevie Nicks, struggled.
Much has been made of the fact that Ronstadt gained weight in her late 40's. But she is 36 here and looks MUCH better than any pop stars nowadays or within the past 15 years. Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Shirley Manson, are you kidding? She's 36 in this and smokin'!
What's amazing is that at the time this was a hit, Linda was considered getting close to over-the-hill. The Go-Go', Blondie, Benatar were all the hot ones. Yet she is gorgeous and though only 36, was competing with women much younger than her. She's always gotten the short end of the stick.
I remember this song coming out when entering my first year at Kent State in Sept 1982. I used to go home on the weekends to catch MTV, which was brand new, to get a glimpse of this video. Thought it was great how she was in her mid 30's when making this video but looked 17. Pulled it off well. Enjoyed it back then and love it even more now! What a cutie! So Britney, Lindsey, etc cannot hold a candle to this hottie. This song should have gone to the Billboard Top Five if not Number One.
Get Closer is such an underrated album- good rock music with some pop and country. Her vocals are truly impressive, it shows she toughened up her vocal chords while on Broadway in 1981. Great-Great album, or as they say now, CD.
She is a fine example as to what sexy is. I say this on an intellectual level. It's not a bunch of ho's on some a video with no clothes on, or thrusting their everything at a camera in a G string. Her moves are cute and flirty, not skanky filth!
Yeah, she hates Bush so much she obsessed but then again she should like him - he's in favor of turning the Western US into part of Mexico, just like her!
Unfortunately... I can't look past it... she is too out there. Anyone who believes that the way to accomplish greater individual freedom is by increasing government power is an absolute IDIOT!
Part 1 I agree with you to a point . I don't think it is ethically acceptable for an artist to use performance time to politicise at my expense whether I agree with them or not. I didn't pay to see them do that . I will not financially support them if they do . BUT ..I will not dis their art on it's own merit simply because their personal opinions are opposite of mine . There is nothing political about this video .
Part 2 Ms. Ronstadt's political opinions are of no concern to me when I judge her art for it's own sake . I respect your right to do whatever you feel is best for yourself . I notice that you came back to hear the song again though . It's just a great song and no more . Break A leg and keep on playing . LOL
Agreed. Her version of The Waiting is great! Feels like Home and We Ran are both fine albums. I still enjoy Get Closer and Mad Love too. My fav more recent song is Icy Blue Heart from We Ran.
What is the name of the Bob Dillon song on We Rab...it's my favorite. Also, present throughout that albumn there seems to have been a certain theme surrounding the opening chord progression from the title song. The rechord resembles Simple Dreams and Hasten down the wind.
She was so beautiful. Loved the 'Mad Love' album, but the best vocal work of her career has to be 'Tumbling Dice' and 'Poor Poor Pitiful Me' off the soundtrack to the movie 'FM'. Raw, pure, powerful, sultry. the definitive LR imo. Her album 'Feels Like Home' (about 10 years ago) was very good, great cover of Tom Petty's The Waiting, & the track 'Teardrops Will Fall' shows she can still knock it out.
Looking back, I'd agree that she seemed to "mess up" her career by abandoning pop/rock after "Get Closer" in '82. She has made 2-3 fine pop/rock albums in the mid and late '90's, like "We Ran"-check it out. All the other styles, just bore me. She also made the mistake of doing too many covers of famous oldies - some very good efforts, some just so-so.
In answer to Keefj200...25 years happened. None of look like we did in 1982. Linda's voice has not suffered with the passage of time however. Her odd choices in projects has though. Ugh! I have had it with standards and jazz albums. Linda, PLEASE come home to rock and roll!
My wife looks exactly like her. One day we were walking in Beverly Hills and everybody's shouting out their cars, "Linda..Linda!! I was looking around for Linda, then I realized they were looking at my wife.
I think Toni Basil coregraphed this.

OMG! someone actually found this video and posted it!! THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES! I've been looking for this particular one for years.

I have to agree with you bluemule, Linda is acting a lot like Mick Jagger in this Video.
mickster907 4 years ago
I was thinking the same thing about her and Patty Smyth's video "Goodbye To You."
By the way, do you all realize that Linda Ronstadt, Heart, and Pat Benatar are still not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame?
nrthdude1 4 years ago
exactly. why not those people? they deserve to be there.
jeanapheena 4 years ago
Dude,
that is so f***in lame.
sansankudo 4 years ago
She is great! She looks and reminds me of Patty Smythe from Scandal in this video.... or Patty Smythe looks like her?!? (Check out "Goodbye To You" video)
Either way, great voice, sexy look(smokin' hot for a mid 30s in '82), and perfect for the time (1982). Should've been a bigger hit than it was.
Snackoman 4 years ago

After 40+ years as a professional musician myself I think I am somewhat qualified to make this judgement .
prydonian460 4 years ago
I am a musician, having played guitar for over 20yrs. I have never played pro (& have no desire to). I feel I am qualified enough to say that if an artist is going to use their art as a platform to espouse political views, I don't have to support them. Artists shouldn't attempt to alienate their a portion of their audience. In the golden age of Hollywood, artist kept silent out of respect for their fans. I support an artist right to speak freely & I also support my freedom to not support them.

Linda is channeling Mick Jagger in this performance.
bluemule24 4 years ago
I don't remember Mick looking hot in a red polka-dot dress, but I will search the web for that video. I would kinda expect more of that kind of activity from Bill Wyman, but who am I to say?
3eyedho 4 years ago
LOL!
bluemule24 4 years ago
And Jagger channeled Tina Turner. Although he only wore a dress for one promo shot.
Both gals looked a lot better than Mick, but all of them are great performers.

Even though she was never "in" again, she remained a respected artist and a household name.
nrthdude1 4 years ago
Critics (of art, music or whatever) are envious losers. "Get Closer" was one of Linda's very best albums, one which I'd have to include in my "100 if I was stuck on an island" list. Talent endures, and the critics... were who, again?
Catrancher99 4 years ago
Uh... male stars did face the same criticism... I don't know anyone who didn't think Mick Jagger was too old in 80's.
wdrroach 4 years ago
She did jump the shark with the rock/pop scene after this. But immediately after she had three top 5 Big Band albums. Following these she had a huge country success "Trio" with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris. She then moved to big hits with Aaron Neville. She knew it was hard for women in rock & pop to sustain top 40 careers so she worked around it while her contemporaries, with the exception of Stevie Nicks, struggled.
nrthdude1 4 years ago
Much has been made of the fact that Ronstadt gained weight in her late 40's. But she is 36 here and looks MUCH better than any pop stars nowadays or within the past 15 years. Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Shirley Manson, are you kidding? She's 36 in this and smokin'!
nrthdude1 4 years ago
What's amazing is that at the time this was a hit, Linda was considered getting close to over-the-hill. The Go-Go', Blondie, Benatar were all the hot ones. Yet she is gorgeous and though only 36, was competing with women much younger than her. She's always gotten the short end of the stick.
nrthdude1 4 years ago
This look was very early 80's. And although I am more of a 70's guy when it comes to music, Linda and her dress are smokin'!

Snackoman 4 years ago
Get Closer is such an underrated album- good rock music with some pop and country. Her vocals are truly impressive, it shows she toughened up her vocal chords while on Broadway in 1981. Great-Great album, or as they say now, CD.

She is a fine example as to what sexy is. I say this on an intellectual level. It's not a bunch of ho's on some a video with no clothes on, or thrusting their everything at a camera in a G string. Her moves are cute and flirty, not skanky filth!

There is nothing political about this video .
prydonian460 4 years ago

Nessus07 4 years ago
What is the name of the Bob Dillon song on We Rab...it's my favorite. Also, present throughout that albumn there seems to have been a certain theme surrounding the opening chord progression from the title song. The rechord resembles Simple Dreams and Hasten down the wind.
darklamp33030 4 years ago
She was so beautiful. Loved the 'Mad Love' album, but the best vocal work of her career has to be 'Tumbling Dice' and 'Poor Poor Pitiful Me' off the soundtrack to the movie 'FM'. Raw, pure, powerful, sultry. the definitive LR imo. Her album 'Feels Like Home' (about 10 years ago) was very good, great cover of Tom Petty's The Waiting, & the track 'Teardrops Will Fall' shows she can still knock it out.
callingit 4 years ago
Only reached #29 on the Hot 100 in October 1982. This was a #1 song if I've ever heard one! I had the album too...her last great album.
gettheknack 4 years ago
That is SO true! Her best vocals-right there!
3eyedho 4 years ago
