  • I think Toni Basil coregraphed this.

  • I love how this video ends with Heat of the Moment by Asia! That's awesome.

  • It's amazing how hot she is here. When you see her in the '70s she was so awkward, no stage presence at all.

  • Linda was a vision here: Her Victorian, porcelain-doll features belie the growls and purrs in her ample, womanly voice. A lot of red-blooded males found her hard to resist. In that retro-40's dress and ankle socks, she's rather like a little girl playing dress up in mommy's clothes and lip-singing to a much older woman's record! Love it!

  • @dompy1 Uh, Victorian?

  • @greg55666 Yes, actually. Those cherubic dolls from the turn of last century; large eyes, full faces and tiny painted lips. She's always reminded me of those dolls, facially.

  • Eat your heart out Jerry Brown. La Ronstadt is "smoking hot".

  • Quirky beat. Nice vocal.

But the performance was contrived, from start to finish, and evreyone knew it. Linda was making her last hit.

She did manage to do a decent job on "Mr. Sandman", though. All may be forgiven.

  • Linda hit #29 in Billboard, 11-13-82. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Shalom, Linda!

  • Not to mention the sexy raunchiness in her voice.

  • I always enjoyed her performances. She was fun until she started getting political on stage and then I lost interest- I was surprise how quickly at that. In my mind it was no longer entertainment it was propgandizing. This is from an ealier, better time.

  • @DoctorJK3 A more yummy time too!

  • my 16 y/o self pleasured to this video...once or twice if i recall.

  • @dilliphant3 uh, thanks for sharing...

  • @dilliphant3 hell...i still remember the see-thru dress on the cover of her "Hasten Down the Wind" album! Lets just say it was more than once or twice!

  • Wasn't this a toothpaste commercial at some point? "Get Close-Up" ???

  • I remeber this song... One song of many "the remake queen" (and, her remakes were always as good or better than the originals) had as an original. She certainly has the pipes!

  • Oh, please! No one sings better than she!

  • She's trying to act like Mick Jagger.

  • THE VOICE! NO BETTER! Sadly, many fools are deaf and focus on her weight. Hurts my heart! Not for long, though. My heart is fixed when I play her music! Thank you, Linda!

  • She just had the perfect combination of naughty and nice going on in the same moment. She had the art of playful flirtation down pat. She could look at you one way in one moment and convey sweet cutie-pie, then the next...convey "I'm guilty as sin. For me, she looked her best at this time. All grown up, with this more sophisticated, adult sex appeal that she didn't have before. The red dress and red lipstick just added more frosting to the cake.

  • WOW! Linda is hottt. Why is this song so short? (2:20) I need more Linda!

  • I use to get this video mixed up with Scandal - Good By To You. oh well I was very young, but liked them both.

  • @seahorse19007 That's funny. I never really mixed the two up, but I always thought they were extremely similar videos and songs. I already knew how Linda Ronstadt was, but Patty Smyth reminded me of her the first time I saw her in the "Goodbye to You" video.

  • Part of the reason I bought this LP back in 1982 was because I thought she was so hot.. Great LP with James Taylor too.

  • Happy, happy, Linda Ronstadt!

  • couldn't say it any better. She's turnig 64 soon and still got most of this today. We all get old but Linda's gotten better and still "" killer looks""

  • Hit #29 pop, #34 rock in Billboard. Remember when it was used in a commercial for Closeup toothpaste? God bless!

  • just now I played this on my turntable...seing her makes it even sweeter

  • her last hit since she jumped the shark

  • I always liked this song and vid. very simple but effective. 5 Stars- Saved as Favorite!

  • Written by John Carroll, of the Starland Vocal Band.

  • boourns

  • Twirl that skirt Linda! This should have been a top ten hit, but peaked around #29

  • Ohh yeah Linda was So Very HOT n Sexy n Beautiful !!!!!! I always Love Linda !!!! But I gotta say I Hate when musicians and actors etc spout out stuff regarding politics...whether I agree with them or Not I just dont think they should go there at all. Honestly I could care less what Lindas political feelings are ... I love her for her Voice and her Beauty !!!!!

  • Let us please take a guess: Your either a Howard Stern fan and or a Republican.

  • Why do those have to be the only two choices?

  • @Seaclam67 You're not your

  • she got Bedroom eyes, used to have a schol boy crush on her lol

  • You know--- just as a passing thought= = I have always wondered if she had on panties here?? It was a known fact that she never wore panties all through the 70's- by her own admission. The way she flips that dress up a few times- we would almost be able to see---- grin YUMMY!

  • @Lindawatcher definately going to watch this video in slow motion then

  • @neosimstyler Did you watch it in slow motion yet?? Did you see a lovely little slice of heavin?- or did she have panties on?

  • I'm a "die-hard" Linda fan and I love this song. It's a great performance by a woman with a truly one of a kind voice that was carefully self-trained into an instrument that could do amazing things musically. This song is a perfect example.

  • The real funny thing about this video is that although by today's standards, it's very tame and corny compared to what people will do, yet one can't help look at her in this and listen that growling wail she does so well and not walk away saying DAMN!

  • Damn she was hot in this video.

This was one of the first music vids I ever taped.

  • Beautiful and sassy !!

  • You know why she's so hot here, let alone just about her entire career: She always looked like a woman AND she knew sexiness was in the tease and not the act. Singers after her, like Madonna, fell over themselves taking the overtly sexual route to the point of absurdity. I'm not saying Ronstadt is a prude, but I'll say this: Looking at her here and comparing her visually to anything Madonna or anybody else has done, Linda's got it hands down. The words....Godess and Venus come to mind.

  • SO WELL SAID! And lets not forget those killer eyes and flirty- innocient smile whew!

  • @Seaclam67 very very well said...also so beautiful to look at !! she did more with less ! I love this lady

  • At her SEXIEST! Linda I still am in love with ya!

  • This is the song that would be used later in the close-up toothpaste commercial.

  • She does have a hot little house wife thing going there.

One of the best singers for women in rock period.

The Bimbos of MTV could learn a thing or 2 from her:)

  • OUR WONDERFUL CREATOR,

    THANK YOU FOR *LINDA*.

    Joy.

  • her last hit before she jumped the shark--still a milf tho--make it a gilf.

  • What a doll! Too bad this song didn't reach Number One or the Top Ten back in the late Summer of 1982.

Patty Smythe from Scandal could've sang this song and made it a hit too. Patty and Lynda look similar.

  • I had a GIGANTIC crush in her when this came out.

  • I STILL have a crush on her! Grin

  • very sexy dress

  • WOW, beautiful and sassy.

  • This video came out around the time that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was on "Saturday Night Live". The look of the two was so similar, that Julia even parodied Linda singing "What's New" during an SNL skit (either in '83 or '84, can't remember when).

  • The song peaked at #29 on The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in late 1982.

  • Yeah, it's 7/4 time. And the performance of the year. Outdone by something forgettable for best performance Grammy...

  • Love this album. Saw her perform this album Universal Studios in the early 80's. She was in her prime I thought. Still one of, if not the best female vocals EVER!

  • Never heard this before, really grabs the eyes and ears ... That is one tricky time signature/rhythmic groove .. and Linda's bluesy singing/shouting reminds me of Bonnie Raitt .. nice !!

  • Who knew it was so easy to groove in 7/4

  • WOW

I never even thought about that, but you are correct. Awesome

  • that cute 50`s fashion is very trendy today, wow Linda, red is hot!

  • Katy Perry has surely been influenced by Linda's sexy, sassy vibe of more than 25 years ago. And Vogue should have put Linda on its cover several times--Linda rocked whatever she wore, everything from jeans to dresses to that pink, clingy thingie on the cover of the Rolling Stone :)

  • Sexy!

  • She is only 36 in this video.

  • I love Linda....And she definitely doesn't look middle aged.

  • Simply beautiful and sassy

  • the sound is low

  • Johnwade are you crazy, she looks Fantasist and sounds great, but then again i'm getting older.

  • No, you are not getting older. She was hot here. Very hot. Dark hair/dark eyes never looked any better.

  • She looks like some middle aged aunt...

  • You should go back and look at some of her Rolling Stone covers from the 1970s. She definitely didn't look like anybody's middle-aged aunt!

  • most "middle aged aunts" would be so lucky....

  • One of only 4 original songs she ever did that cracked the Top 40.

  • Btw, just to let you know, I hope you do see this posting, shank bone!

  • Is she a babe or freaking what!!!

I dated a honey from Pennsylvania me Jr. year oc college who looked and acted just like her in this vid...and it was just when this tune was on the charts...

Baby, if you're out there, please know that I never forgot you!

  • This video is so amazing, hard to believe Linda is now 62 and far removed from her sexy siren days. Thanks for the memories!!!

  • I just want Linda to rock again. I can't stand that boring jazz stuff and PLEASE, no more standards.

  • Cute as hell. I just wanted to rip her out of the TV when I was 15.

  • I always thought this video was strange because Linda hardly ever moved much on stage during her performances. It's odd to see her dancing around and she seems a bit uncomfortable here. But as always she still looks great and her voice is superb.

  • Beautiful and sassy, just love it.

  • OK, Ok RM48 you might have a point here. Ha ha. i've tried to argue it, but no getting around it, this one is very sexy.

  • RM48 wrote (4 months ago): "I have always loved Linda Big time, voice wise for me no one can compare, alot has been said r/t her political views, she also has said she never exploited her sexuality--right cant see that at all here--she is hot and she is showing the goods------sexy............"

Yeah, she is sexy here. But after considering it I think it's so well done that it doesn't come across as sexual exploitation.

  • Yeah just watched it again. The dress alone makes it quite tame (polka dots), that's why I think it's done in good taste (wonder about those polka dots though, that's what threw me on first viewing; love is blind [to polka dots?] ha ha). Until she lifts it up that is. Ha ha. Nah, just joking, I think it's good, sexy but in a good way.

  • This is her sexiest video.

  • I hated this the first time i saw it. It made me cringe. But now I absolutely love it. She has a live version of this too.

  • Wow, I found another video from Night Tracks! Man, I still really miss this show which is approaching its 25th birthday on June 3, 2008.

  • I always thought she was talented AND beautiful. But, I remember this video "sealed the deal" as far as my crush on her!

  • This is a good song, she has a good voice. I dont like the dress though!

  • In the Shawshank Redemption novella, Linda was the last girl to hang on Andy's wall. As opposed to Raquel Welch in the film.

  • I mean the picture of Raquel, not that she herself was actually in the movie.

  • Jon Carroll wrote this song. He sang "Afternoon Delight" with the Starland Vocal Band in the 70s who won the Best New Artist Grammy that year. His latest CD won a bunch of Washington Area Music Awards (WAMMIES). She sounds great here.

  • WOW Linda, beautiful and sassy.

  • Lind Ronstadt had been around for 17 years before this video came out going from folk to country to county-rock to rock to New Wave and then back to New-Wave influenced pop with this song. Her moves are more animated than her hippy days, but she performed this way in concert starting in 1977. She''s not channeling anyone here or doing a cheap imitation either. You can't imitate yourself. Der.

  • I have always loved Linda Big time, voice wise for me no one can compare, alot has been said r/t her political views, she also has said she never exploited her sexuality--right cant see that at all here--she is hot and she is showing the goods------sexy............

  • Rm48--I replied near the top to your post here four months ago.

  • Like OMG x2!!! i never knew there was a vid for this song. it's the cats meow!!! linda rocks and Get Closer has some great cover tunes from that era. polished, like this video was in its day. what a talent, thanks linda!

  • Actually, it's just like the "Tell Him" video from the album. MTV2 played a long time ago and I recorded it. I didn't know there was a video for either of them!

  • OMG! someone actually found this video and posted it!! THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES! I've been looking for this particular one for years.

  • I have to agree with you bluemule, Linda is acting a lot like Mick Jagger in this Video.

  • I was thinking the same thing about her and Patty Smyth's video "Goodbye To You."

By the way, do you all realize that Linda Ronstadt, Heart, and Pat Benatar are still not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame?

  • exactly. why not those people? they deserve to be there.

  • Dude,

    that is so f***in lame.

  • She is great! She looks and reminds me of Patty Smythe from Scandal in this video.... or Patty Smythe looks like her?!? (Check out "Goodbye To You" video)

Either way, great voice, sexy look(smokin' hot for a mid 30s in '82), and perfect for the time (1982). Should've been a bigger hit than it was.

  • Uh...not exactly. Mick faced being too old for pop radio not rock stations. His rock career was never at risk for getting older.

For women it was absolutely different. As they matured fickle pop music fans stopped listening, and no loyalty existed from rock fans who always wanted younger & hotter women.

With the exception perhaps of Stevie Nicks, none of the rock women from the 1960s and 1970s lasted much beyond the early 1980s.

  • It's too bad that some of you can't separate art from politics . And although I am a big Stone's fan , Mick Jagger wishes he could sing half this good !! This is just a great song by a great artist . Nothing more . I don't agree with most of the political views put forth by the vast majority of the artistic community but it doesn't stop me from acknowledging the great work they do . After 40+ years as a professional musician myself I think I am somewhat qualified to make this judgement .

  • I am a musician, having played guitar for over 20yrs. I have never played pro (& have no desire to). I feel I am qualified enough to say that if an artist is going to use their art as a platform to espouse political views, I don't have to support them. Artists shouldn't attempt to alienate their a portion of their audience. In the golden age of Hollywood, artist kept silent out of respect for their fans. I support an artist right to speak freely & I also support my freedom to not support them.

  • Linda is channeling Mick Jagger in this performance.

  • I don't remember Mick looking hot in a red polka-dot dress, but I will search the web for that video. I would kinda expect more of that kind of activity from Bill Wyman, but who am I to say?

  • LOL!

  • And Jagger channeled Tina Turner. Although he only wore a dress for one promo shot.

Both gals looked a lot better than Mick, but all of them are great performers.

  • She's doing a cheap imitation of Mick Jagger here.

  • This ROCKS !! Linda R at her Saucy BEST . Eat your heart out Susan Tedeschi !! Linda even makes dancing in 7/4 easy . Thanks for this one . It always blows me away !!

  • Yeah! This song proves that an odd time signature can rock hard. Too bad it didn't start a trend; would make the music a lot more interesting.

  • Dear RLPETE2, I agree with you . Odd time can rock . Sound Garden sure proved it !!

  • This ROCKS !! Linda R at her saucy BEST !! Eat your heart out Susan Tedeschi !! She even makes dancing in 7/4 Easy !! Thanks for this one .

  • Beautiful and sassy!!

  • It was this video at age 10 then made me look at teachers, bank tellers, tupperware saleswomen, housewives, and many others in their 30's and 40's look closer.

  • Beautiful and sassy.

  • I like the way Asia's Heat of the Moment starts to come on next, but great song!

  • Yeah, and somehow I hope that video from Night Tracks can also be found just like the previous video Rick Springfield - Affair Of The Heart.

  • I like the whole concept of matching this video theme to the Get Closer album cover theme. It was spot on.

  • THANK YOU for posting! Loved this video when it came out in 1982. She rocks!

  • The 80s alternative & establishment critics including Rolling Stone, crucified Linda for not writing her own music even though that was the norm for 80s superstars. They also criticized her for being too old, even though male stars did not face the same prejudice. She got sick of the game and switched to different types of music because she knew she had the voice and talent to succeed, which she did. Even though she was never "in" again, she remained a respected artist and a household name.

  • Critics (of art, music or whatever) are envious losers. "Get Closer" was one of Linda's very best albums, one which I'd have to include in my "100 if I was stuck on an island" list. Talent endures, and the critics... were who, again?

  • Uh... male stars did face the same criticism... I don't know anyone who didn't think Mick Jagger was too old in 80's.

  • She did jump the shark with the rock/pop scene after this. But immediately after she had three top 5 Big Band albums. Following these she had a huge country success "Trio" with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris. She then moved to big hits with Aaron Neville. She knew it was hard for women in rock & pop to sustain top 40 careers so she worked around it while her contemporaries, with the exception of Stevie Nicks, struggled.

  • Much has been made of the fact that Ronstadt gained weight in her late 40's. But she is 36 here and looks MUCH better than any pop stars nowadays or within the past 15 years. Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Shirley Manson, are you kidding? She's 36 in this and smokin'!

  • What's amazing is that at the time this was a hit, Linda was considered getting close to over-the-hill. The Go-Go', Blondie, Benatar were all the hot ones. Yet she is gorgeous and though only 36, was competing with women much younger than her. She's always gotten the short end of the stick.

  • This look was very early 80's. And although I am more of a 70's guy when it comes to music, Linda and her dress are smokin'!

  • good song, shit dress

  • The Bob Dylan song is called "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues." Linda's vocals are fantastic on that song.

  • she is SO sexy!!!

  • I remember this song coming out when entering my first year at Kent State in Sept 1982. I used to go home on the weekends to catch MTV, which was brand new, to get a glimpse of this video. Thought it was great how she was in her mid 30's when making this video but looked 17. Pulled it off well. Enjoyed it back then and love it even more now! What a cutie! So Britney, Lindsey, etc cannot hold a candle to this hottie. This song should have gone to the Billboard Top Five if not Number One.

  • Get Closer is such an underrated album- good rock music with some pop and country. Her vocals are truly impressive, it shows she toughened up her vocal chords while on Broadway in 1981. Great-Great album, or as they say now, CD.

  • Nice song. The drum part by Russ Kunkel.

  • last great song from her before she jumped the shark

  • She is a fine example as to what sexy is. I say this on an intellectual level. It's not a bunch of ho's on some a video with no clothes on, or thrusting their everything at a camera in a G string. Her moves are cute and flirty, not skanky filth!

  • I'm not sure she's wearing underwear.

  • I wonder too! yummy!

  • Yeah, she hates Bush so much she obsessed but then again she should like him - he's in favor of turning the Western US into part of Mexico, just like her!

  • Too funny!! LOL, big time. I hate the dorks politics, too, and I voted for the schmutz! Lesser of two evils to choose from.

  • Too bad she is a liberal loon! I would have enjoyed her music had she not been a socialist left wing wacko!

  • When I watch and listen to her, politics are the LAST thing on my mind. Me like linda! Linda CUTE!

  • Unfortunately... I can't look past it... she is too out there. Anyone who believes that the way to accomplish greater individual freedom is by increasing government power is an absolute IDIOT!

  • Still, she was a hottie idiot!

  • LOL!

  • She was a "hottiot!

  • Part 1 I agree with you to a point . I don't think it is ethically acceptable for an artist to use performance time to politicise at my expense whether I agree with them or not. I didn't pay to see them do that . I will not financially support them if they do . BUT ..I will not dis their art on it's own merit simply because their personal opinions are opposite of mine . There is nothing political about this video .

  • Part 2 Ms. Ronstadt's political opinions are of no concern to me when I judge her art for it's own sake . I respect your right to do whatever you feel is best for yourself . I notice that you came back to hear the song again though . It's just a great song and no more . Break A leg and keep on playing . LOL

  • we, as Americans forgot during the Bush era (error) that we can and should speak our minds

  • I'm glad she's a left wing wacko, it's way better than being a right wing wacko.

  • Then move to Russia instead of trying changer things here!

  • Agreed. Her version of The Waiting is great! Feels like Home and We Ran are both fine albums. I still enjoy Get Closer and Mad Love too. My fav more recent song is Icy Blue Heart from We Ran.

  • What is the name of the Bob Dillon song on We Rab...it's my favorite. Also, present throughout that albumn there seems to have been a certain theme surrounding the opening chord progression from the title song. The rechord resembles Simple Dreams and Hasten down the wind.

  • She was so beautiful. Loved the 'Mad Love' album, but the best vocal work of her career has to be 'Tumbling Dice' and 'Poor Poor Pitiful Me' off the soundtrack to the movie 'FM'. Raw, pure, powerful, sultry. the definitive LR imo. Her album 'Feels Like Home' (about 10 years ago) was very good, great cover of Tom Petty's The Waiting, & the track 'Teardrops Will Fall' shows she can still knock it out.

  • Only reached #29 on the Hot 100 in October 1982. This was a #1 song if I've ever heard one! I had the album too...her last great album.

  • That is SO true! Her best vocals-right there!

  • Looking back, I'd agree that she seemed to "mess up" her career by abandoning pop/rock after "Get Closer" in '82. She has made 2-3 fine pop/rock albums in the mid and late '90's, like "We Ran"-check it out. All the other styles, just bore me. She also made the mistake of doing too many covers of famous oldies - some very good efforts, some just so-so.

  • I remember the main hook of this tune became the ad for Close-Up toothpaste. "You want love? Get Close-Up!"

    Or am I imagining that?

  • I think you are Correct!

  • No you are not.

  • In answer to Keefj200...25 years happened. None of look like we did in 1982. Linda's voice has not suffered with the passage of time however. Her odd choices in projects has though. Ugh! I have had it with standards and jazz albums. Linda, PLEASE come home to rock and roll!

  • She is the most man ,, top shelf voice..ROCK ON LR

  • I have not seen that video since 1982. She was so damn cute. What happened?

  • WOW! Never got to see the video. Thanks for sharing.

  • 7/4 time. Very Cool!!!

  • This was the first album of Linda's I bought...been in love ever since...1980 I think.

  • My wife looks exactly like her. One day we were walking in Beverly Hills and everybody's shouting out their cars, "Linda..Linda!! I was looking around for Linda, then I realized they were looking at my wife.
