Don't let this put a downer on the history behind the bravery of this raid but here's a bit of trivia: Had the Axis won, everyone behind the operation would have been tried and executed for major war crimes to thousands of civilians living in the Ruhr.
juliecarson100, FYI, the man who designed the spitfire was R. J. Mitchell and he is from Kidsgrove in Staffordshire, Not far from Stoke-on-Trent. Agree with you 100% about the 'Northern' thing. :D
Oh!....and the spitfires...designed by a guy north of Birmingham and the merlin engines were built by mancunian Henry Royce at his rolls-royce factory in....guess where...Manchester. Without northerners in WW2...we be fucked!
Sorry to go on, but all those southern accents in the wartime movies really pisses me off!
Makes you proud to be Mancunian. The Lancaster bomber (formally known as the Manchester bomber) designed, developed and built in Manchester...as was the bouncing bomb.
I sing this every year, the Hymn, "god is our strength and refuge", We sing it with the brass and the drums etc... and It gives me that strange tingly feeling all over. By far the best hymn/song ever written :)
I'm watching an episode Nova where these men are trying to do a scaled down recreation of the operation, with a small dam and a replica bomb and all. Really interesting.
@Fishfingers232 Anti-torpedo nets were placed in the water in front of the dams to stop torpedos. These barrel bombs were given backspin so that they skipped across the water and over the top of the anti-torpedo nets.
@EarlyManStanding thnx, but I always wondered why they couldnt get Mosquitoes to fly along the valley to fire rockets into the dams. Yes I know the concrete was incredibly thick but perhaps some sort of special AP weapon would be designed.
@Fishfingers232 the bombs were like depth charges, set to explode at a depth which would maximize the explosive pressure against the dam wall. It was necessary for the explosion to occur underwater with the charge right up against the dam. The back spin on the bomb not only made the bomb skip over the net but it also made the bomb curve up against the dam wall as it sank. An explosion in open air would have had no effect on breaching the dam wall.
one of the most epic missions of WW2! i wish spielberg/lucas/gibson would start remaking all of these old films and incredible missions that define the herosim and bravery of the Allied armies of WW1/WW2.
Saw the Lanc 5 years ago at an Airshow near me. He came in behind us and flew right over the crowd at low level as the final march started on the PA system. Not a dry eye to be seen. Bloody Fantastic.
This fantastic piece of music is very special to me indeed, my Grandad was in the RAF during the war but he passed away not long ago. At his funeral we had the hymn "God is out strength and refuge" upon which this theme tune is based. What a fantastic tribute
Sends shivvers down my spin, flying the flag for the freedom of England, risking there lifes for a real cause, not like these pussy wars today. Real fighting took place back then, and we won, England! Unbelievable Jeff
in the early 70'smy parents bought a music centre and we wereallowed to choose 2 albums free, i chose now thats what i call music 71, &great war movie themes, wish i could get the full album, enough im off to bridge over the river kwai
My girlfriend's grandfather, Group Captain Arthur Reece was a highly decorated RAF pilot during WW2 and apparently helped train Guy Gibson (leader of the dam buster raid)..he also had a cracking moustache! Rule Britannia!
68 years ago my great grandad Squadron Leader Henry Maudslay was blowing the shit out of a dam at 21, Legend. Wish I had met him. Makes you so proud listening to this song.
@copferthat churchill served for about 4 months on the front line in ww1, primarily he was a politician and organised the debacle at Gallipolli that left thousands of British and Australian soldiers dead on Turkish sand, not that im putting him down, national hero that he is
@mtheadedwally First, yes, both Hitler and Churchill did have to hide from air raids - quite regularly (and, yes, Churchill's home was hit). Whether they had to "run screaming in terror" is another matter, but Hitler *did die* during the War and many of his henchmen followed soon after, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make about them being safe and sound.
Also, Churchill should have been "directly in the firing line"? That would make you feel better? How would that help things?
hubiedcaid, i knew somewhere there would be one american who liked us brits LOL, i hope you enjoy your concert in May perhaps you could put some on you tube? i live quite close to where they filmed the dam busters film, don't know why i told you that LOL. i tell everyone! its nice to know a film was made near you i guess.

@maddoogketchup Well, I might be getting RAF Lindholme mixed up with RAF Hemswell, but he definitely flew Lincolns & he definitely flew in the film. Among other aircraft, he also flew meteors, & I think venoms (but it may have been vampires) before applying to transfer to bomber command in the hope of flying Canberras. At the time of the making of film he was flying Lincolns used for training navigators & other aircrew. The flying sequences were filmed at Derwent Reservoir.
@hawickman Say hello to your Dad for me. There is an RAF Battle of Britain memorial at Bradwell on Sea (Essex) with many Canadian pilots names engraved on it. We owe Canada a lot.
This one is pretty fun to play. Played many marches like this one with orchestra, but this one i played with my brass band. And it's always much more fun to play in a brass band than to play in the brass section of an orchestra, no offence.
@Bluxico And even today, in Germany, they refer to this raid as "the Mohne catastrophe" - without a single mention of bombs, the RAF or Lancasters!
However, if you watch the video presentation at the Mohne Dam, you will realise just how much damage the Dam Busters actually caused. Without doubt, it destroyed German munitions, hindered their war support machinery -- and delayed the production of their V2! This probably savec thousands of lives in Britain.
@AuroraTopaz You don't understand, In youtube when someone puts thumbs down at a video, people put like e.g 10 cats hated this video, i put 13 germans hated this video because of cource its the Dambuster.
When I hear people talking about stress at work I think of these young men whose average life expectancy was six weeks. THAT was a stressful job, yet they got on with it without complaining, ever conscious that each mission might be their last.
to say this raid was insignificant is very naive to say the least,in hindsight everyone knows the physical damage was very small but at the time the news was a massive boost to the moral of the country, newspapers of that day and accounts in numerous books are available for anyone to show that-more importantly the knowledge that was acquired with regard to low level precision bombing was absolutely priceless to bomber command. gung ho and brave probably-insignificant no! thank you dambusters!
The Americans did not win us the war, but it would have taken a lot longer, with a lot more deaths had they not taken part. The allies won the war, not any one particular country. And yes, the russians made a great sacrifice.
I'm tired of the Americans saying they saved us. My grandad fought in the african desert and when they got to Tripoli, the Germans had buggered off. They sat at a little cafe and had a cup of tea while the Americans arrived saying a ferocious battle had taken place and that THEY had taken Tripoli. Stop lying.
Perhaps Britain would have survived WWII without the US, but it would have never defeated the Axis in North Africa. Remember all the weapons and raw material that the US supplied to the British to win at El Alamein. Besides, the 8th British Army neither managed to break the the front held by the 1st Italian Army in Tunisia. Amerincans rescued you and they're not the only liars...
@MegaCarlo1979 DOn't even mention Italians. They continuously lost. Fact. The African conflict was won sooner with American TANKS not American MEN. We were the superior fighters. And we still are. Fact.
@weewulliebee They continuosly lost... Like at Bir El Gobi perhaps? Oh, I forgot that maybe your history books still attribute that British defeat to the Germans who weren't there. You know that for most of the North African campaign the British had twice the men on the Axis side, which anyway was for 2/3 composed by Italian troops? So the superior fighter took more than two years to win and while facing tremendous defeats. Nothing personal against the British anyway.
@MegaCarlo1979 Superior numbers means nothing. We won practically every battle against the Italians. However it got much harder when the Afrika Corps came. But we triumphed twice at El Alamein. In short: WE WON. End. Of. Story.
Didn't achieve a great deal really, made a relatively small dent in the German industrial machine and helped increase German resolve. The British (I am one) should stop going on about the war they did so much to cause (appeasement of Hitler & re-arming of Germany in the 1930s).
@dutchgoing your probably right they didnt achieve much,i guess thats why the raid disappeared into insignificance and was never heard of again! no one wrote any books about the raid and it was such a waste of time and effort no one made a film about it.....waste of time really wasnt it!......well spotted.
@jamesjnr67 The raid had a 60% casualty rate for the air crews which pretty much made it a suicide mission and it is well known that bombing the Germans increased their morale. A small amount of damage was done to German industry which was quickly repaired and the duration of the war was not shortened. The film is pure slanted 1950s jingoism not a realistic representation of events. Nobody outside of the UK & Germany today would have heard of the raid, so it was not all that significant.
@ black belgium guy, ur a massive dick which is ironic cos u havnt got one, britain invented, tarmac, tyres, bycicles, cars, vaccum cleaners, conveyor belts, steel ships, steel all toget
Don't let this put a downer on the history behind the bravery of this raid but here's a bit of trivia: Had the Axis won, everyone behind the operation would have been tried and executed for major war crimes to thousands of civilians living in the Ruhr.

I own two pieces of one of the final test bombs. A piece of the outer shell and a piece of the detonation device within the bomb :).

The Americans did not win us the war, but it would have taken a lot longer, with a lot more deaths had they not taken part. The allies won the war, not any one particular country. And yes, the russians made a great sacrifice.
the1stpip 1 year ago
You all seem to forget what the russians did for us. That is a sacrifice. Millions of them lost their lives for us.
popspie 1 year ago
I'm tired of the Americans saying they saved us. My grandad fought in the african desert and when they got to Tripoli, the Germans had buggered off. They sat at a little cafe and had a cup of tea while the Americans arrived saying a ferocious battle had taken place and that THEY had taken Tripoli. Stop lying.

@weewulliebee
MegaCarlo1979 1 year ago
@MegaCarlo1979 DOn't even mention Italians. They continuously lost. Fact. The African conflict was won sooner with American TANKS not American MEN. We were the superior fighters. And we still are. Fact.
weewulliebee 1 year ago
@weewulliebee They continuosly lost... Like at Bir El Gobi perhaps? Oh, I forgot that maybe your history books still attribute that British defeat to the Germans who weren't there. You know that for most of the North African campaign the British had twice the men on the Axis side, which anyway was for 2/3 composed by Italian troops? So the superior fighter took more than two years to win and while facing tremendous defeats. Nothing personal against the British anyway.
MegaCarlo1979 1 year ago
@MegaCarlo1979 Superior numbers means nothing. We won practically every battle against the Italians. However it got much harder when the Afrika Corps came. But we triumphed twice at El Alamein. In short: WE WON. End. Of. Story.

Didn't achieve a great deal really, made a relatively small dent in the German industrial machine and helped increase German resolve. The British (I am one) should stop going on about the war they did so much to cause (appeasement of Hitler & re-arming of Germany in the 1930s).
dutchgoing 1 year ago
@dutchgoing your probably right they didnt achieve much,i guess thats why the raid disappeared into insignificance and was never heard of again! no one wrote any books about the raid and it was such a waste of time and effort no one made a film about it.....waste of time really wasnt it!......well spotted.
jamesjnr67 1 year ago
@jamesjnr67 The raid had a 60% casualty rate for the air crews which pretty much made it a suicide mission and it is well known that bombing the Germans increased their morale. A small amount of damage was done to German industry which was quickly repaired and the duration of the war was not shortened. The film is pure slanted 1950s jingoism not a realistic representation of events. Nobody outside of the UK & Germany today would have heard of the raid, so it was not all that significant.
