They're called bassdrops. The'yre pretty popular in modern death metal, usually before breakdowns or breaks. The drummer usually hits them with a midi controller pad hooked up to a Roland TD brain or some kind of sampler with an 808 set.

You can also custom make them in programs like protools or reason, etc. then upload them on a midi controller. Thats what I do live with my band, that way you have high ones and super low ones.

Everyone, listen to italia10588. It's a Roland drum sample called an 808 that used to be used primarily for hip hop. To get different tones you can speed it up, slow it down, and pitch bend it to get different emphasis styles.
