Hey man, I've been playing guitar for almost 5 years, and I've always been into that super shred stuff, and I've recentley been listening to a bunch of jazz funk music and have been re-thinking of starting to just play this style of music, what are some good affordable guitar brands and amps you could recommend?
Does anybody know what guitar that is? It looks like a Gibson ES something, but I've not seen that colour, and I can't see the headstock very clearly :S
i can just see in his face that he's happy he ever learned guitar. I wish I could play like him. I'm a bass player. But I like to mess around with chords I guitar and create melodies for my songs.
@rrtierney Can't tell exactly cause he only uses two chords for that part and doesn't bother w/ sixths. I can only tell from the progression or how the sixth is used. Pretty likely to be Cm(Eb Maj). Rhythm @4:35 is C Dorian(Bb Maj) for sure though.
Uncle Raggy again. Geeze man! You took a chord I have used for years and breathed new life in it! Thanks! This is the chord Clapton uses in one of his blues songs (intro) and I have been trying to find it for 12 years! And you hit it right out of the chute...I was trying to simplify something I thought was more complex. And you, you rascal, you simply played - well, thanks to you I can now play that amazing lick. Raggy
decent lesson. Basic with a few add ons. But I would disagree that it is in the style of John Scofield. I think to get Sco, study Mickey Bakers chord structures.
Hey, love the funk! can't get enough! I've never gone to someones site based off a you tube vid. but i'm heading to yours right now! OW! Hit! meh! Very cool tone too!
Marty, nice lesson. I thought I'd add that the Cm6 is also an F9/C. I've found that in bossa nova the middle finger going between F and C-usually starting on C, then F-is a pretty common sound. Thought I'd mention it.
not a gibson for sure. Marty!!! I love your lessons man. you always have three lessons in one of your rambling sessions. Someday I will be able to get some of the premium stuff. promise. kudos man.
Marty, good shit. I dig your feel. Not like these plastic cellophane mutha's usually found on youtube. Like your boy giving commentary from the background.
How can this motherfucker even talk about john scofield, and think he can say "it's a big part of my playing", when he doesn't even play decently the guitar? secondly, how the fuck can he even THINK that he can give a fucking "lesson" when he doesn't even know a shit about what he is talking.
@simonjaramillo - please craw back under a rock, your a loser piss ant who does not deserve to be on the same planet as Marty. Marty I would kick his ass for you except he is probably some 16 year old pimple face punk ass virgin.
but ive been just playing rhytm guitar for 9 years so i have no experience in this amazing music whatsoever : ( i dont think im ever going to be able to play it : (
@FTStratLP so far, 17 people (thumbs up) plus me would love to hear the scofield song this is referencing. i'm not commenting on his ability, but this demonstration has about as much to do with scofield's playing as a tube of toothpaste.
@noisyneil If you need a reference listen to Hottentot one of his easiest.. Scofield uses this bass/chord rhythm style in Bb- ALOT. He's showing the style not a song.. and he's sharing it with you for free to help you get better at guitar so even if you don't think it's a Scofield style take what you can from the lesson and be happy you got it for nothing.. geez.
Man got to be honest. I like your playing but really when you demonstrate the example riff from 7:57 to 8:14 I find it to be very sloppy and you get a little crazy with the muted notes like if you misplaced a finger there, but you got much better after that. I'm not trying to be mean, I just believe that one constructive critic is better than 100 congratulations. Don't get me wrong; Do I consider myself to be better than you? the answer is NO.

Remove the Scofield word from your title, man. You are a mediocre player who wasted my time. The chord you are introducing, with the mute A string, is generally played with the thumb on the root note, not the way you do it. Try the thumb, it's much easier and has no fretting.

Hi all.
The lesson is good but the title isn't right. John Scofield chords and rhythm
don't sound like this and also John's groove isn't like that.
For me it sounds more like 'The thrill is gone' than Scofield.
