  • @gnawy113 viva Zetla

  • Hey man, I've been playing guitar for almost 5 years, and I've always been into that super shred stuff, and I've recentley been listening to a bunch of jazz funk music and have been re-thinking of starting to just play this style of music, what are some good affordable guitar brands and amps you could recommend?

  • does anybody know if that walking bass song at 5:10 is a real song or is it just jamming?

  • i'm saint lucian

  • I am brazillian, who cares?

  • I am turkish.I watched this video also I kiss my finger. bye~

  • I am Polish. I watched this video. bye~

  • i like this guy

  • I am filipino. I'm lost. bye~

  • Great lesson.

By the way those 2 chords reminded me so much of KC & The Sunshine Band 's Get Down Tonight and after I checked the song is also in C.

  • turn on transcribe audio it translates the guitar playing :D

  • Rock on Big M. Thanks for putting up vids for us to work on. For those who don't who take time to give a thumbs down, eat shit bitches.

  • i love medeski martin and wood. i am so happy to stumble into this. i am a piano guy myself but i love it.

  • Hi! :D

  • héy_ãNýønË_wÂNÑã_chat_wÍth_mè_Ï_fËËl_sÔ_l0nèly_tÕDây♫

  • what kind of pedal does he use to loop it, does anyone know the name of such a pedal? thanks

  • @gp1231 I'm pretty sure he uses the boss loopstation rc-2

  • Does anybody know what guitar that is? It looks like a Gibson ES something, but I've not seen that colour, and I can't see the headstock very clearly :S

  • @greco66 Its a Heritage hollow body guitar I think

  • @greco66 It's called (I think) The Heritage, it's a company setup by the guys who worked for Gibson when they moved factories. Something like that.

  • i can just see in his face that he's happy he ever learned guitar. I wish I could play like him. I'm a bass player. But I like to mess around with chords I guitar and create melodies for my songs.

  • thank you, marty, you're great

  • Thanx Marty, Pls add more Funl/Jazz groove stuff like this.

  • Highly appreciate that bro...needed some new influences and that was tight:) keep jammin'

  • what key is the rhythm he's playing at 3:45 in? is it E flat major? B flat major?

  • @rrtierney

Pretty much everything in the video would be based around C dorian so Bb major.

  • @rrtierney C Minor/Eb Major

  • @VicNastyGuitar I'm getting two different answers here. Is it Bb Major or Eb Major? lol. Both sound okay with it...

  • @rrtierney Can't tell exactly cause he only uses two chords for that part and doesn't bother w/ sixths. I can only tell from the progression or how the sixth is used. Pretty likely to be Cm(Eb Maj). Rhythm @4:35 is C Dorian(Bb Maj) for sure though.

  • damn man... you're good

  • hey Marty and all you guys! may any of you give me some bands who play this style?

  • dude 1:32 epic as all hell man :D

  • @TheLoveboxApparatus its a guitar looper.

  • Those chords are fucking weird

  • @LeonSam87 yeahhh, about the shape @_@

  • Keep showing the groove Marty.

  • thnx bro.. I learned alot from U

  • good.black music)

  • Uncle Raggy again. Geeze man! You took a chord I have used for years and breathed new life in it! Thanks! This is the chord Clapton uses in one of his blues songs (intro) and I have been trying to find it for 12 years! And you hit it right out of the chute...I was trying to simplify something I thought was more complex. And you, you rascal, you simply played - well, thanks to you I can now play that amazing lick. Raggy

  • DO YOU HAVE ANY ALBUMS?

  • Marty, Mate you rock and you teach in a easy, very clear understanding way.

If possible, can you teach me(us) the song "highway 20 ride" from the Zac Brown Band.

Keep it rocking and thank you for the good stuff

  • rule no. 1; always tune your guitar before a performance

  • I want to clap to you :)

  • @1:29 sooooo sweet!

  • YEA RIGHT

  • Marty Rocks!!

  • still nice hat!

  • marty dope lick at the end there. and way to make a lot of use out of a easy grip. thanks

  • nice i would love to jam with u Marty check out my vids

  • nice some new ideas...thank you

  • what's the difference in sound between a blues guitar and a jazz guitar?

  • marty is so cool

  • the style is more similar to the mendeski, martin and wood group which scofield was playing with.

  • great job man!

  • hey its good

  • i think good lesson and very nice music

  • decent lesson. Basic with a few add ons. But I would disagree that it is in the style of John Scofield. I think to get Sco, study Mickey Bakers chord structures.

  • @jimmybassman1 although not in the style of Scofield these are very much Mick Baker Chord Forms

  • where is scofield???

  • what a beast :P

  • Marty, I just soloed for 28 minutes and 23 seconds and my head exploded!

  • cool and inspired

  • me encanta! sos un capo chabon!......

    HI! from Argentina....

  • Nice!! Great job, great ritm!

  • good shit. But misleading in the topic.

  • Luv ya marty, but thats not Scofield :)

  • That sounds real groovy. Got some new ideas to my playing which I unfortunately can't say about most of YouTube vids out there.

  • is that the 4x10 or 2x12 Deville in the back. I have the 2x12, it sounds awesome

  • Marty, wish you where in my band, you're cooool

  • Tasty!!!!!

  • Great video! I favored this. It helped alot for me 2 learn the style. Now I have some where to start. Thanks alot.

  • Effective chord

  • what is that guitar?

  • aren't you dorianizing it by shifting the cm7?

  • Hey, love the funk! can't get enough! I've never gone to someones site based off a you tube vid. but i'm heading to yours right now! OW! Hit! meh! Very cool tone too!

    Peace!

  • very nice BUT please could u change the title!! u r misleading people!

there is nothing about/from scofield in there ...

    thanks

  • Marty, nice lesson. I thought I'd add that the Cm6 is also an F9/C. I've found that in bossa nova the middle finger going between F and C-usually starting on C, then F-is a pretty common sound. Thought I'd mention it.

  • thanks for sharing this, great stuff

  • he used the "i'm disgusting" face on a lick that was not really that disgusting. Teach real music please.

  • any tips on strengthning my ring finger and marty much love from the u.k dude.. love playing jazz and this has helped

  • Awesome Marty, but where's the deluxe reverb??

  • I think he is refering to the "A Gogo" album which is a bit of funkish jazzy feel... Like "Chicken Dog" for exemple...

  • john scofield?seriously?

  • It's a "The Heritage" 535...The old Gibson firm...I got one 2k model

  • great man!! Greece

  • martin you are an excellent guitarist and teacher!!! greetings from Greece!

  • not a gibson for sure. Marty!!! I love your lessons man. you always have three lessons in one of your rambling sessions. Someday I will be able to get some of the premium stuff. promise. kudos man.

  • i think is not Gibson...

  • Hi! could u please tell me the model of that guitar?.?..i felt in love with HER!! tanx..

  • Es 135 (original by gibson)

  • @FelixG9 thank u sooo much!!

  • this guy's helps ...thanx a lot for all kind of your infos

  • Marty, good shit. I dig your feel. Not like these plastic cellophane mutha's usually found on youtube. Like your boy giving commentary from the background.

  • @simonjaramillo - please craw back under a rock, your a loser piss ant who does not deserve to be on the same planet as Marty. Marty I would kick his ass for you except he is probably some 16 year old pimple face punk ass virgin.

  • @simonjaramillo - You are a complete moron. I want to add more but feel that is sufficient.

  • gordo sos una banana te desprecio maricon

  • gordo sos un banana y un choto. te desprecio.

  • Thank you so much for that!!! Great lessons!!!

  • i want to learn jazz so bad

but ive been just playing rhytm guitar for 9 years so i have no experience in this amazing music whatsoever : ( i dont think im ever going to be able to play it : (

  • You should check out the players school of music, they can teach jazz to anyone

  • oo

can you send me a link to their site

    or channel???

  • learn some theory and chords and get some lead sheets and start trying to get some solo versions going.

  • @JimmyBlade69 Time & Patience!!!!!

  • 8:58

  • 4:07 I like this part because the bastard knows he's good

  • @larsreal9 Yeah, totally showing off!!!! In a good way ;-}~

  • nice! this is pretty useful! thanks! :D

  • 3:05 - wonderfull, gorgeus, amazing, brilliant feeling of mediterranean ambience...I just can play it all the time I get guitar in my hands ^^ :P

btw. it reminds me of final fantasy 7: costa del sol's theme :)

  • i went to 28:23 and my guitar blew up and my amp melted. fuuuuuuu

  • Man , can u send me ur lessons to my account?

im big interested in funky, jazz, and blues music

  • finaly lessons on youtube for peaple that already are ready to learn this stuff!

  • scofield? don't think so

  • @noisyneil Well he has to simplify it for us. but Scofield does to similar things on albums like bump

  • @noisyneil

    Open your ears man!!!

  • @FTStratLP so far, 17 people (thumbs up) plus me would love to hear the scofield song this is referencing. i'm not commenting on his ability, but this demonstration has about as much to do with scofield's playing as a tube of toothpaste.

  • @noisyneil If you need a reference listen to Hottentot one of his easiest.. Scofield uses this bass/chord rhythm style in Bb- ALOT. He's showing the style not a song.. and he's sharing it with you for free to help you get better at guitar so even if you don't think it's a Scofield style take what you can from the lesson and be happy you got it for nothing.. geez.

  • @JohnnyRetweeter this is a great introduction to basic jazz-funk rhythm guitar.

  • what amp you using?

  • It's a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

  • i find its easier for me to play that with more of a hendrix thumb wrap style.

  • is that a hamer your playing?

  • looks like a Heritage

  • cool lesson.....cooler hat ;)

  • Fantastico Marty !!!! simply fantastic !!! Grazie Mille. saluti Raffaele.

  • great lesson..thx again...:)

  • Yeah get rid of the Scofield title...this has nothing nada zitch to do with Scofield.

Maybe the Doobie Bros. ...but not Scofield ..get real man. zzz zzz zz

  • Man got to be honest. I like your playing but really when you demonstrate the example riff from 7:57 to 8:14 I find it to be very sloppy and you get a little crazy with the muted notes like if you misplaced a finger there, but you got much better after that. I'm not trying to be mean, I just believe that one constructive critic is better than 100 congratulations. Don't get me wrong; Do I consider myself to be better than you? the answer is NO.

  • @taylor914ce faaag

  • @miertjie94 o... that hurts so much... sniff, sniff...

if you don't like it is not my problem...

  • @AchternStyg no way man

i cant do it with my thumb

    cause im a beginner

he just makes it much more easy

  • why cant people just shut up and play their guitar in their own style .. im sick of these bullshit posts like sound like "mr x" lessons. 9/10 they sound nothing like them as demonstrated in this lesson. Whats the point ? Why would you want to sound like someone else .. work on your own sound !

  • Nice groove -)

  • I think you should call this lesson Funkenstein not Scofield.

  • 9:22 = D9

  • what is that chord at 9 : 22 ??

  • G7/9+/5+ (XGBFA#D#)

  • 9:22 = G7#9 aka the Hendrix chord

  • rickso & rasjavita where are your lessons posted? I would like to check them out.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't make lessons. If you don't like my comment sorry, but is my opinion ok and I still say that this is nothing about John Scofield. I have all John Scofield's albums. I'm not talking about notes is more about time, rhythm and feel. Check my video of 'Protocol' if you want. Don't worry I love this lessons

  • Hi all.

The lesson is good but the title isn't right. John Scofield chords and rhythm

don't sound like this and also John's groove isn't like that.

For me it sounds more like 'The thrill is gone' than Scofield.

    Anyway learn all you can.

  • Your right, not Scofield at all, nothing like him--good lesson, but Scofield might be amused,he doesn't play anything this simple,

  • @rickso12 the album " a go go " the title track " a go go " john scofield direct quote but ya yer right that was some other john scofield.

  • I think the lesson was great, I never meant

the Scofield remark to be disrespectful

your lessons are a great learning tool

    RS

  • @rasjavita heard the album " a go go" pretty much taken straight from it?

  • what a noob hiohihiih

  • good lessons man

  • wow good stuff here, im stealing the lick at 9:00 that was hot, hope you dont mind lol

  • Thanks for the help Marty I like your approach and relaxed style thanks . Is there a place where I can view all of your lessons?

    thanks again swani

  • 7:42 django reinhardt hahaha made me laugh

    this is awesome
