From the Classic 7 albums. I loved the other 6 at the time, back in the 1960-70s and for some reason I didn't like this one. I think it may have just passed me by. In the last couple of years I've heard it properly again and wondered what the hell I didn't like about it. It's superb. This track is also a beauty.
This song is totally unique. The dolts in the Rock Hall Induction group inducted The Cure and Iggy Pop over great bands therefore no validation. No Moodies, Doobies, Little Feat ,Los Lobos, Tower of Power, Rascals, PR & Raiders, Steve Miller, Deep Purple, Johnny winte3r, Tommy Castro.

Thanks so much for posting these legendary songs from the Moodies! Your videos are awesome! I got to share with my wife and son an evening of their music this week. It was my 5th time! Wow, the Moody Blues live on!!!
@wojack1000 the beatles used to watch procol harum reherse the beatles obtained the mellotron from mike pinder the moody blues site the beatles as an influence
Face< Exactly they are on some kind of higher plane and just taking us there as guests.Damn my wife and I (both 58) argue about them and Pink Floyd but she
doesnt understand each Moody alblum was a chapetr in their book. But as all of those we enjoy their genious a short run and never can get back their early works
it' up to you to appreciate great music. MB are the best and have not received their due but life is like that. Sometimes it takes a loss to believe the facts. I hope they are received by the masses what true impact this music has made. They have changed my life by their faith and such grace!
Moody Blues are a category into themselves. Sure it is "rock n roll" but that is just the window dressing. When you get beyond that you see a perfect union of spirit and music that grabs you and transforms your outlook and takes you on a ride like tantric yoga! They are a group completely at peace in themselves who invite all listeners to journey with them on the ultimate trip into internal space. The intensity, the joy, they have given to so many. "It's Up To You".
@eroewade The sound at 0:06 is either a) slide guitar b) pedal steel guitar c) a mellotron portamento [the pretenders use a pedal steel on lie to me you can here it prominantly in the beginning of the song] .
I know that it has a lot to do with MONEY and who is going to get their cut but does anyone have any other idea why the MOODY BLUES are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ? I can't believe some of the losers that have been inducted already. I contacted the museum and they said that it's not up to them. The decision comes from New York and music's power brokers. Isn't that just BULLSHIT ?
i had the great fortune to see the Beatles in Montreal in 1964. It was at the start of their world tour. They probably could not hear themselves or each other--relatively low-power amps, no monitors, & thousands of SCREAMING fans. Basically the guys had to pantomime. i was 7 years old at the time (my cousin cancelled (!) so my older brother took me). My ears rang for hours afterward. i panicked, thinking that the tinnitus would never go away, & still i thought, "i got to SEE the Beatles!"
Question of Balance was the Album that got me into the Moody's---not every song on it is a masterpiece, but songs like this were totally underrated and didn't get the airplay they deserved--IMHO God Bless the Moody Blues--their music is eternal
great song. I remember lying on the floor with my head between the speakers and just being carried away by this fantastic album and this was my favourite song on it. Justin has one of the greatest voices in rock, sort of the next generation's Roy Orbison.
And for all the guys with their pissing contests about this band is greater than that one than the other one - save it for someone who cares if you can find such a person or entity on the internet, you're boring.
With the Moody Blues and songs like this we really thought true love could have been a contender, but we all surrender to the legal tender and look what it has gotten us. Peace.
Nothing can compare to the Beatles. But the Moodys were performing live, where the Beatles stopped performing live in August 1966. I never saw the Beatles live, but they said they didn't like to play live because they could not hear each other. The Moodys were fantastic live. A small orchestra with a very large sound.
When I saw the Moody Blues in 1970, they were the best sounding band I've heard since seeing The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The 5 Moodies with Mike, Justin, John, Ray, and Graham were a superb band.
I love this Beatle vs Mood Blues debate, because in my opinion the Beatles and the Moody Blues are the two best groups in rock history. The Beatles pionered the musical way and the Moody Blues to it into the stratosphere. Peace.
I'd put lots of the Moodies' work up against the 3 Beatles songs you list - and I LOVE the Beatles:
- Visions of Paradise stacks up well with Norwegian Wood.
- We Can Work It Out is one of the Beatles' lesser Top-40s, so I'll pass on that one. Better would be Here, There and Everywhere, and I'd put up Nights In White Satin.
- And against Hey Jude, let's go with Tuesday Afternoon.
The MB's consistency for decades must be applauded. Too bad the Fab 4 toasted themselves.
If you can just forget about the Beatles for a moment and follow the musical progression from the Modys earliest albums tothe latest you should be able to understand the quality of their work.
They even acknowledged that a lot of their latter work was just thrown together to meet deadlines. And it was successful! Why? Because they were the Beatles. Getting back to the Moodys.....their music, lyrics and composition was unforgetable( not all of it) but they never had the marketing power that the Beatles had and believe me, that was a BUSINESS thing.
Guess What ???? The Moody Blues are still performing minus Thomas, Pinder and Lane. They have a core group..... And they are G R E A T! Now you can't say that about the Beatles can you? I understand what you are saying aout the Beatles. PArt of their initial success was their originality which they road then evolved and then evolved again. The Moodys came out along with much musical competition. A lot of the Beatles songs achieved success simply because they were the Beatles.
And to avoid the crazy publicity and crazy fans that the Beatles had, they chose not to put their pictures on the album covers. At least that's what Graeme said in the Classic Artists DVD. A smart move, however I think their choosing not to do it kept them from getting the popularity they deserve.
@FizzyDrink Do you think that the Moodies chose to put their physical appearance in the back and put their music: their purpose up front & center? You gotta get up pretty darn early to fool the Moodies, edgy of spirit as they are. Too much popularity, IMHO, would be counter-intuitive to the spirit of the Moodies. In the same way, the Moodies induction into a Rocket Hall of Fame might be the Shock-us Hall of Shame...who will care...won't make a jot of cultural progress: same old anti-art bias.
The Moody Blues are definitely near or at the apex of the British Renaissance: the profound artist apology to the rest of the world for the crimes of the British Empire. The long list of beautiful expressions, mainly of music and writing, as the arts of peace, is awe inspiring. Though Britain has come a long way, it still has far to go; it has to become much more of a gift economy by way of a complete break with its ties to imperialist warmongering. It is the win/win after the lose/lose.
@FizzyDrink Their's to much truth in what their songs are about, that certain people want you to for get about thinking for yourself, Theirs hidden truths in their songs that people don't want you to think about.
@FizzyDrink Their's to much truth in what their songs are about, that certain people want you to forget about thinking for yourself, Theirs hidden truths in their songs that people don't want you to think about.
@FizzyDrink Yea that girl pulled grahams tie an almost choked him to death if he would have died she could have been charged with secound degree murder i think that epstein was more of a hinderanse to the beatles george martin arranged their songs
@FizzyDrink the moody blues were so powerful in the sixties it scared them. i saw an interview with .justin hayward and he said that they just had to think of something and someone would hand it to them.they were more popular than you imagined.
Gort451 - you're right, they didn't have Epstein. Unfortunately they didn't have John lennon, Paul McCartney or George Harrison either. Other than that, I agree completely! A great band, but not even in the same league as the Beatles. Not many bands were. The Beatles had already broken up by the time this came out . the Moody's drew plenty of influence from their already finished body of work.
@gort451 I grew up in the 60's, and though I love the MB, I can't agree. Justin Hayward wrote some superb melodies, but the Beatles' music had more guts than the MB's, which at times could be a little lightweight, including lyrics which were often a bit pretentious. And while both the MB and the Beatles had some great early stuff, as time went on the Beatles' music grew even more powerful and innovative, while the MB's music took on more of a pop flavor with songs like "Your Wildest Dreams."
@gort451 I wouldn't say they didn't have Brian Epstein, Brian Epstein can be credited with screwing the Beatles out of a lot of money and merchandising. George Martin was more of the producer who helped the success of the Beatles.
That being said HOW THE HELL DID ABBA GET INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND THE MOODY BLUES DIDNT?! I read an article recently with the top ten disappointing rejections of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and of course the Moodies were there.
@DJMoxie the beatles were loyal to brian epstein even though he did that they were upset when he died the maharishi tried to help thm with their grief lew grade some british lord owned the beatles publishing they went through hell getting it back abba had some crooked manager maybe thats how they got in the rock and roll hall fame
for alex rags and everyone else the truly great songs for the most part never got much air play to explain the why of this would take too many words for a post on you tube. the joy is in the finding dig deep my friends into the music of this era you will find many jewels. This is my favorite moody blues song and I'm not sure if I ever herd it on the radio.
@TheMidnightrider4 Agreed. It's a pop masterpiece. Maybe not Hippie-ish or prog-rock-ish enough for those days. But it's just perfect and mad with the hooks and the gorgeous bridge. Thanks Dude. Peter
This track was played regularly at Portman Road(home of Ipswich Town F.C.) during the pre match requests and warm ups. Don't know why, but like you, very rarely heard it on the radio. I'm a great Moodies fan and they were one of the finest bands ever!!
@julesmoody Sorry, don't know, the era I was talking about was early 70's, but I know they were still doing concerts in Ipswich in 2008 with the more recent line up!
I was fortunate enough to hear it on the radio, that's why I bought the "album". Hail WNEW-FM 102.7 in NYC when it was free form rock and no f- - - - n playlists.
What a great tune. I do also remember when the album first came out. For some reason this song never got much airplay. Oh well it sure is good to hear it again.
justin had a major impact on my musical/spiritual life. while working security @ the hollywood bowl, i was able to thank the band in a restroom backstage. justin not included 'cause he had separate accomidations for his family. justin is doing work for the Creator of all things and doing very it well.
I absolutely love this song...a timeless classic...I had the privilege of hearing Justin perform a live acoustic version of this song on his solo tour back in 1997...an amazing experience and a memory to last forever...WOW!
Listening to the Moodies on vinyl was a trip - the 25th time, I'd hear something new in the music, and it would make my day. On the 50th listening, I'd hear something else new, and it would make my day again. On the 75th listening. . . the depth of the music and the message was "out there, Man."
Great posts here on this terrific song that got NO PLAY ON THE RADIO AT THE TIME OR SINCE, I had to hear it when I bought the vinyl record. The Moodies were truly on another cosmic plain. They were-are a signature of the 1960's but way above it. The reach for love, god and truth, something that is foreign now. Oh, and when I hear them I, too, want to be young again and cruising in my '62 chevy Impala going to pick up my Friday night date. Thanks for posting this great song!!
They didn't need to have every great song on their album played on the radio. People bought the albums. FOR the album cuts, as much as for the top 40 cuts. Everybody who wanted to know DID know. This is one of my all-time faves. The Moodies weren't a group anyone wanted to hear 2:30 of - everyone wanted to hear the whole album. Stoned, preferably, but if not, that was cool, too...
@Broadsidejohn The 60's & 70's provided us with some of the most impressive but yet unappreciated groups-Moody Blues, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Alan Parsons Project to name a few. '62 Impala? Mine was a 64 Chrysler 300K with rear speaker & reverb. Nowadays, care sound systems are more impressive than home systems. Oh, to have my Sansui QRX6500 4 channel!!!
@usm7j That ride sounds sweet. My Impala was an SS with AM radio and rear speaker between the seatbacks. I was too poor to do anything with the sound system before I got rearended by a tailgating truck driver while I was avoiding hitting a small dog in my lane. Didn't Chrysler have Hemi V8's as an option then?
@Broadsidejohn the last time they had a record out was like 14 year ago it only made it to #128 on the charts for one week they seem to be concentrating on concerts
Would love to hear this, and Dawning is the Day, in concert!

BrainEatingApe 1 year ago
@gort451 they didnt seem to need managers much just managed themselves like jazz musicians do
spacepatrolman 1 year ago
@gort451 I wouldn't say they didn't have Brian Epstein, Brian Epstein can be credited with screwing the Beatles out of a lot of money and merchandising. George Martin was more of the producer who helped the success of the Beatles.
That being said HOW THE HELL DID ABBA GET INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND THE MOODY BLUES DIDNT?! I read an article recently with the top ten disappointing rejections of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and of course the Moodies were there.
DJMoxie 1 year ago
@DJMoxie the beatles were loyal to brian epstein even though he did that they were upset when he died the maharishi tried to help thm with their grief lew grade some british lord owned the beatles publishing they went through hell getting it back abba had some crooked manager maybe thats how they got in the rock and roll hall fame
spacepatrolman 1 year ago
@gort451 They were better off without epstein he was queer and he sold the beatles publishing they had a hard time getting it back

for alex rags and everyone else the truly great songs for the most part never got much air play to explain the why of this would take too many words for a post on you tube. the joy is in the finding dig deep my friends into the music of this era you will find many jewels.

Ruiggie 2 years ago 2
@Ruiggie "were"? they are still touring;in USA now UK in sept2010
julesmoody 1 year ago

The earliest Moodies tune I remember hearing on the radio in the Cleveland area was The Story in Your Eyes. Kind of pitiful.

Broadsidejohn 2 years ago 20
They didn't need to have every great song on their album played on the radio. People bought the albums. FOR the album cuts, as much as for the top 40 cuts. Everybody who wanted to know DID know. This is one of my all-time faves. The Moodies weren't a group anyone wanted to hear 2:30 of - everyone wanted to hear the whole album. Stoned, preferably, but if not, that was cool, too...

@Broadsidejohn
right on John..this tune is perfection..
some songs just are.

Oh, to have my Sansui QRX6500 4 channel!!!
usm7j 1 year ago
@usm7j That ride sounds sweet. My Impala was an SS with AM radio and rear speaker between the seatbacks. I was too poor to do anything with the sound system before I got rearended by a tailgating truck driver while I was avoiding hitting a small dog in my lane. Didn't Chrysler have Hemi V8's as an option then?
