  • thanks very informative video

  • Cheaper Yamaha acoustics are shipped with the truss rod loose, They've engineered the neck so the "pull" created by light gauge strings makes it "just about right" without it ; ) I buy and sell vintage Yamaha FG acoustics and set em up with medium gauge Martin strings. Hehe ; )

  • I don't think that people would like to hear that you are recording while repairing...

  • @safeandsoundhg

they don't own my thoughts and opinions

    wtf?

  • @safeandsoundhg I would feel honored to have Davey record comments on my guitar.

  • Hey, I have a 1968 Gibson and down at the very bottom the bottom part of the guuitar goes "in" and the top part hangs off a little, and the brigde is kinda messed up, the guitar is still playable but since it is a gibson, i want it to be in better condition, what should I do?

  • Hi Davey,

Have this old 60's somthing bird..The top appears to be warping upward in the low E area of the bridge.. Do you have any suggestions or a video on how properly to deal with this problem..

    Thanks, Dave..

  • @luvkountry

    old wood gets twisted

tuff to say without seeing the actual guitar

  • @davey4557

Not sure how to provide you with a few photos to give you a better idea of the problem. I'm a few miles away from your area so I wouldn't be able to take it in so you could see

    it..in reality..

    Thanks Dave

  • I had one of those Yamaha's that had the entire bridge 3mm to close to the neck. There was no compensation whatsoever. The owner told me the guitar was in tune when he bought it. I find that hard to believe. I milled the bridgebone cavity an axtra 3 mm with the Dremel tool and put a wider bone in it. Looket a bit like an Ovation bridge after that, but it allowed me to get the guitar in tune all over the neck. However check the nutbone first, because sometimes it's to far away from the first fret.

  • Hold the camera steady and get out of the way when you show how to replace the strings.

  • does string cuts in the bridge realy effect guitar tone that much

  • Ugly camera work!

Cannot be watched without getting sick!

  • Love the vids dave. nice to see someone that is not a 100 year old prude doing this repair vids.

  • Yes they do! fortunately for me the damage was so extensive and most of the pins were broken or cracked. Of course epoxy lets loose at around 180 degrees so a healthy steaming will get it done eventually. Still, you're absolutely right, it can be bitch and it's nothing I would recommend for a beginner.

  • Had an Artwood AW-25 12 String in for repair that was crunched real good and previously repaired with wood screws!!!! Broken headstock, cracked heel... the works! I had to remove the neck and it comes off much like a real guitar where the tongue is separated, the fret removed and steam injected into the seam but the neck pulls straight off instead of vertically as with a dovetail. There's 5 dowel pins holding the neck onto the body. Not too difficult once you know that's the way it goes.

  • @mudsharkable

I heard they are using epoxy on these cheaper dowel pin necks :(

a real bitch to pull apart

  • Man I've learned alot of very valuable information from you Dave. Thanks alot!!! Your a good dude.

  • @appetitefordynamite

    hey

    thanks for the comment !!!

  • My strat is away for repair.. I am hoping the dude is half as good as you buddy.

  • Hey dave, what's your opinion on lemon oil for the fretboard?

  • @RatchetRenegade lemon oil contains Kerosene in it I dont like it it think can cause problems with the finish of the guitar if any gets on it I was instructed to use a small amount of linseed oil on a clean fretboard once a year is plenty every 5 years is also OK never oil you fretboard every string change rosewood under the right humidity really doesnt need oil it's a dry climate that suks the moisture and cracks and splits stuff it helps it look nice too that's a plus
  • @davey4557 Dave I've got a can of boiled linseed oil. Is that okay to use on ebony fret-board for a wipe on and off conditioning? And how long do you pause before wiping down? And how long do you wait before wiping/cleaning down with the lighter fluid? I worry I'll just be removing all the oil if I wipe too soon.

But I realize that stuff will dry to varnish if left on!

Boiled linseed oil is all I found. I got a can years ago when an old timer said to get it to seal old wooden head golf clubs

  • @XmyAssYTmofo

    just a couple drops

    wipe it in and off

yer done in less than a minute

  • @davey4557 Can I do a linseed oil wipe-down on my whole guitar? It's a satin lacquer jobber. I finally got all the furniture wax cleaned off that some well meaning nut had plastered it with. I fear it's dry 'cause of all the sun exposure it got in a pawn shop window before I snagged it.

  • @XmyAssYTmofo

    no

    it's for open grain wood

    not finished wood

  • @davey4557 Wow thanks for the quick reply! I'm a lot slower haha

  • whoever was filmingh really sucked, bunch of important parts are covered by the guys sleeve of his shirt or just outview, get a new camera-man

  • Have been you at work all afternoon and enjoyed every minute .

  • My 1972 Yamaha needs a neck reset....... I'm told that they can be done but it's really difficult on the yamahas and a guitar that cost me about $80 is not worth the hassle. Adjusting the truss rod might help a little but in my case I don't know that it'll do too much.

  • Sterling Raw Linseed Oil, @jamestowndistributors (YouTube won't let me put URL's), QT for $13 + $8.80 shipping. ASIN: B0017OCKJ2. You can Google-Shop or Amazon search for the ASIN and find it. BTW, that was 1 QT, not 2, for the Sunnyside Raw Linseed oil.

  • @Cypherdude1

you can get smaller amount at an art supply store

  • Sunnyside Corp. 87332 Raw Linseed Oil, @Amazon, 2 QT for $8.33 + $6.00 shipping. ASIN: B000LNQU0U. You can Google-Shop or Amazon search for the ASIN and find it.

  • Thank you Dave. Your video was very helpful.

  • umm so i dropped my acoustic full on its back and now the place where it holds i believe its called the neck is crack so its bending forward. can that be fix by aplieing super glue and putting pressure on it cuz kinda hard to place when ur strings are 4inch away from the frets

  • @NastyMutation NO! That will NOT work. You will need to take your acoustic to a luthier and have him repair it. Chances are, the neck will need to be removed, cleaned and reglued. If it's not worth repairing, you may need to just buy another guitar.

  • keep up the good work Dave

  • Davey, I just brought a new yamaha LLX16, there are alot Fret Buzz, and after the dealer change the action, the number of fret buzz reduce to a few but now the action has become too high. And some of the notes when I played them , the sound vibrating time just ended too fast then the rest of the string on the same fret. The agent told me that is normal and if the Yamaha agent said ifs not their scope of warranty, they will charge me for it. I am very disppointed. What is problem with it?

  • @rudichen

    It could be many things

I can't see the guitar in my hands.

If you just bought it and don't like it ask for a refund or see if they have another like that to compare to.

    maybe they all suck :(

    How much did it cost?

    Cheers !!!

  • @davey4557

It cost AUD $1050. they reduced from $1400 to $1050. And they told me this display set only there for 2 to 3 weeks, but after that from the serial no, i then know its there in Jan 10, I bought at Dec 10. sucks big times !!!

  • @rudichen

    yes that does suck

I wish I was closer so I could look at the guitar and give you my opinion

    Cheers !!!

  • @rudichen

    yes that does suck

I wish I was closer so I could look at the guitar and give you my opinion

    Cheers !!!

  • You can get good quality refined raw linseed oil at any art store like Michael's, same thing, quality artists oil doesn't have additives for rapid drying (ie boiled).

  • whats ur opinion on locking tuners which require no winds?

better than having to wind, right?

  • @tehsimo

    they seem to work great

    I've worked with them

    fast and easy

  • @davey4557 i got a guitar and when i put my finger on the 9 10 and 11 th fret on the high e string it makes this buzzing sound and its not my finger position because i checked. so can you tell me why my guitar is doing this

  • LAsy comment about the JLD Bridge system: Well, it's been one day since I installed the system. I was doubtful but for $22 I figured I'd give it a try. By God, the warp is completely gone and the sustain is amazing. I can't wait for Davey to try one. I used the sytem requiring a screw but there is another that doesn't require any drilling. It's $52.

  • Davey,

Do you know anything about the JLD bridge truss? Breedlove guitars now all come with them. I ordered one for my old Yamaha, which has a slight belly warp. There are some examples on you tube with a guitar like mine. It also supposedly helps the projection of the guitar.

  • @TheBarry33

I'll have a look and let ya know !!

    Thanks for the comment !!!

  • All new guitars today come with an allen key to fit the truss, maybe also should be instructions not to use it, LOL I've always felt that truss rod tension was operator echelon maintenence. Surely some idea about what one is doing is important but every operator (player) looks down the neck and has an idea of whats needed to fit the one quarter at the 12th fret. Nice tip by the way, the quarter Thanks again Dave

  • @jsyren1

    Thanks for the comment

    Cheers !!!

  • nice job !

  • i think you should warn people about adjusting the truss rod unnecisaraley,iv'e seen many expensive guitars ruined by people who dont know what there doing,it should always be done by someone who knows what they are doing

  • @hanghang71

I agree, but if you plan on being a Pro musician that travels in all kinds of weather and climate learning to adjust things is going to get you through those years. I had to learn to tweak guitars because we had nothing on the road and if the guitars didn't work we didn't eat. LOL

It's funny how fast you learn when that sort of scene is presented to you.

    Cheers !!

    Thanks for the comment !!!

  • What's that white piece called that the strings lay on? (by the bridge)

  • @losaface4

    The bridge saddle

  • Dave... you're a hoot man! I just love your videos. I thank you for letting me feel a small part of each of these repairs and upgrades... I feel like an apprentice headed for journeyman!! Can't wait til...MASTER!!! :) Once again, thoroughly enjoyed and thanks for taking the time to record it all!!

    Billo

  • @BilloT5

    Thanks Man

    Have Fun and Enjoy

Work on Junk Guitars to start. I may make it look a little easier than it is.

    Cheers !!!

  • I think that maybe they used dowel rods to put the neck on like the Gibson Maestro series!!!

  • @bluegrasslives60

    I think your correct !!!

  • can you provide correct height settings on the bridge of an acoustic guitar. I received an old sonata guitar (made in korea) without bridge slot. The action is completely off about 1/4" inch I assume i need to sand down the bridge Plastic to acceptable levels? What would they be? txs

  • @keithsa41

I really need to see the guitar to be able to determine that. They are all slightly different.

  • @keithsa41 I am a guitar tec too and without seeing it it's impossible to say. Every guitar repair like this is different

  • After all that work, whaddaya got? Still a Yamaha. :( Your work is great tho.

  • @BarneyFife00

yep Ya ma Ha ha ha ha

  • Thanks a lot.

Try 2 make the video 4 my hadnmade classical guitars.

Cheers !2 !!!! ha.. ha... ha....

  • @AtlantisLuthier

Hope to see your work soon !!!

  • Just wonder what type of camcoder you are using in this video?

    Thanks

  • @AtlantisLuthier

    Sony HDR-SR5

    Cheers !!!!

  • I believe you restrung the guitar incorrectly. The ball end of the string is not supposed to rest on the end of the pin, but rather the end of the bridge plate

  • @gzeigerman

The string will follow the path of the pin and pull itself into the correct position during winding, without yanking or reefing hard on the string like I see people do.

    Cheers !!!

  • great detailed info

    keep it coming
