  • Welcome to Taiwan town-Pingsi (平溪)

The Sky lanterns are also known as the Kong Ming lanterns. Legend has it that the lanterns were the invention of Zhuge Liang (Kong Ming was the name of Zhuge Liang upon reaching manhood) of the Three Kingdoms Period, who utilized the same principles as that used in hot-air balloons to float the lanterns as a means of communicating military intelligence.

  • In addition, according to the elders in the Shihfen area in Pingsi Township, bandits roamed the mountains in the early days, and villagers would seek shelter in the nearby mountains when the bandits came on a raid. After they left, the men who stayed behind in the village would fly Sky lanterns as a signal of safety to beckon the villagers’ return

  • Although the area grew more stable later, the activity of flying Sky lanterns remained and became a local custom. Today, flying the Sky lanterns has become a symbol of prayers to the gods for their blessings. The sight of thousands of Sky lanterns carrying peoplesm, wishes and slowly floating into the night sky is a sight to behold

  • Poznan's City Hall specially hired a company to clean up that mess next morning, so don't worry little eco-terrorists!

  • I think Noc Kupaly is a wonderful old tradition worth being populated. And I wish more people in Poland celebrate it instead of Noc Swietojanska or Valentine's Day.

I don't want to see this celebration as a reason to state some kind of Polish Record.

  • @invisionMan2006. I can't believe that some american is trying to preach about environment pollution. Check Your, so called holidays and how much trash You produce during each of them. Don't forget that USA is responsible for majority of pollutions which whole mankind produces. And You waste more than rest of the world combined. Please check statistics.

We don't try to tell You which holidays are OK and which NOT. Respect our freedom. Don't create imaginary problems.

  • in other news, polish police have no leads in a rash of fires on the other side of town.

  • @tyriasmostwanted - have you ever heard of fires from other happenings like this one that were done previously in France or other parts of the world? Have you ever studied physics?

  • @laliday have you ever tried to screw in a light bulb with two of your friends?

  • @tyriasmostwanted - do you know the origin of Polish jokes in Europe and in the USA?

  • I would really like to see this from space, a satellite's view.

  • @virpuljviesulis One is falling @ 1:26

  • @komiradTV Oh no! does that mean whoever let it go will have bad luck for the rest of the year?

  • Każdy lampion kosztował 5 zł(o ile znajomy prawde mówił) pomnożyć to przez tyle ile zostało puszczonych i teraz pomyślcie ile głodnych dzieci w Polsce miało by za to jedzenie.

  • @sewomuketa it's Poznan, not Poznaniem :) but it's nice to hear it, thank you!

  • @sewomuketa

    This City it's Poznań

  • AS beautiful as that looks, do we really need to throw 11,000 pieces of litter into the sky, where it will eventually fall back to earth as ground litter? When did we stop caring about this planet????

  • @InvisiMan2006 If 11,000 pieces of litter inspire millions to action in their respective passions, some of which may include environmental causes, then I think that's a lot of caring right there.

  • @briannevillano1 You didn't just attempt to justify mass pollution and littering , did you? Perhaps people should find inspiration in those who put others before themselves - I couldn't possibly harm the planet or anyone else for my own pleasure - it's morally wrong.

  • @InvisiMan2006 Did you look into it to make sure that the trash from the event wasn't cleaned up to make sure your self-righteousness is appropriate?

  • @InvisiMan2006 Dude this ceremony has existed for thousands of years. Mass pollution? This is paper, it will be gone after the first rain. Paper is made from trees.

Your opinion on pollution is pathetic. They arent polluting the earth for pleasure. They are perpetuating a thousands of years old ceremony to remember their ancestors.

The earth has existed for millions of years, why people like you think a couple pieces of paper left lying around will upset the balance is beyond me.

    Its idiotic

  • @blackXSpr I would normally agree, but who knows what they laminate papers with nowadays, what kind of plastics/metals they line it with, etc?

Just playing devil's advocate though. I largely agree with you, even though I have no real proof they are only using paper and such. I'm no expert on it.

  • @Shippoyasha Its a stupid argument to make that any festival as minute as this with such a storied tradition should be buried because a few environmentalists get upset that something that has happened for thousands of years is continuing

  • @blackXSpr I wish some of these set your family's house on fire and burn your whole family to death so you can remember your own ancestors every time you see these.

Yeah it's paper made from trees. So have you helped plant some trees to make more paper? I doubt it, because you're as irresponsible as you're selfish.

  • @inn0x lololololol

  • @blackXSpr Is beautiful, brought ppl together, not a question about it but the problem is not polution is fire. During June in Brazil, ppl used to do that to comemorate St. John festivities and because of the ballons we had major fires in the woods. Today we face that as criminal (we want to save the jungles and forests and the animals there). Off course there's some ppl that still does that. Years ago we almost had a big airplane crash because of that beauty.

  • @evanbellen That would make sense

If not for the fact that after awhile flying, they will catch fire, burn themselves, and all that lands on earth is ash - NOT a fireball.

  • @blackXSpr depends where they do that, if is around a desert area with no wind ok but I've seen some crashing against houses, powercords and trees, is not a fireball but the thing that burns in the balloon keeps burning for long time, even after the crash or if it turn to ashes.

  • @InvisiMan2006 Seriously I bet you just took a high school enviroment class and are al trying to save the earth now. Seriously open your eyes dude, its pathetic

  • @InvisiMan2006 The amount of litter in these celebrations is minimal, paper is bio-degradable. Do you go around all the 4th of july videos and lecture everyone about them sending explosive and toxic chemicals into the sky and blowing them up to make pretty lights? NYC alone uses 22 tons of fireworks in their display, how many hundreds of tons of chemicals are used across the whole US? But yea, you go on your little crusade against a bunch of paper lanterns in Poland..

  • @styr311 As a matter of fact, I don't support any type of firework display because I do believe that we shouldn't be spewing toxic smoke into the air for our amusement. The trash that public fireworks create in our parks is disgusting. As far as these lanterns being biodegradable, the question is after how long? 90 days? 6 months? I use biodegradable bags for composting, but they have to be in dirt to actually degrade.

  • That was awesome! I would love to witness that myself one day.

  • @virpuljviesulis Not the one at 1:23

  • интересно)

  • this is ufo

  • the entire world should try to do this all at the same time =) wonder how that would look like. this is just too magical. it's really breathtaking.

  • If you have a crush on Repunzel (thumbs up!)

  • I have been wanting to see the Thailand one for years! Thank you for sharing... Is this a yearly thing that Poland does? It is magical...

  • @kimberlyashdown in 2012 it is expected to set the new world record with 20 000 lanterns. Come to Poznan and check it :)

  • Wait...what happens when the fire blows out?...

  • who dislike a wonderful thing like this??? There are 7 people who are a fucking lame troll...!!!!

  • красиво)

  • And in the next day they wonder why the forest is on fire...

  • Poland celebrates Midsummer?:O Thought only scandinavian countries did that

  • To jest przegenialne. Tylko ciekawe co by było jakby wiatr mocno dmuchnął i wszystko by na ludzi spadło:d

  • That's really, really pretty

  • Re: Anyone who complains that this is littering or a fire hazard: Duh, that's why they're biodegradable (made only of sugar paper and compacted hay) and are released over the river, so that if any come down (which they don't until they stop burning) they are extinguished safely.

  • it's sooooo cool

  • a beatufil thing *-*

  • THAT is really COOL. Like spirits ascending.

  • 99 REAL Luftbaloons! <3

  • @cricketsoda - I am not saying that we have to be crystal clean. I am just questioning the impact. I do the same in my life, riding my bike to work most days, and trying to do what else I can. It's the little things. Further, I am seriously curious about how to clean up after something like this. I would organize something like this too if I knew I could do it with little environmental impact.

  • Wow, this gave me a lump in my throat :}

This is so incredibly beautiful, ..

can you try for just 5 seconds to focus on how amazing it is without worrying about the tiny pieces of ash that the rain will break down and wash away?

  • one kiedyś spadną a ciekawe kto to będzie sprzątać!

  • All you environmentalists act like you have never been to a fireworks show. Driving a car is a fire hazard and the millions of used cars litter up the planet a lot more than a few pieces of paper.

  • It's beautiful, but what's the environmental impact of this? Who cleans up all the lanterns?

  • That is amazing. Magical and fantastic. Bravo to all involved.

  • 7 people didn't have the money to buy lanterns.

  • Fire hazard and littering. Why would anyone do this? Admittedly it is beautiful, but irresponsible.

  • @jitenshajin so are fireworks new years and 4th of july...

  • Cut to... any aircraft that needs to fly in the area

  • something this cool would never happen in america

  • po prostu niesamowite i piękne!

  • po prostu niesamowite i piękne!

  • po prostu niesamowite i piękne!

  • These festivals have been happening for thousands of years, they inspired the scene from 'Tangled'...not the other way around

  • you guys are lame. this is beautiful

  • Kawaii

  • what a beautiful fire hazard.

  • Um. Fire hazard anyone?

  • 7 people are evil witches.
