yeah it can be used in combat but not as spectacular as it is right here (they practicing). But certain attack and defense can be used for sure yes, and you must know what you are doing to make it work lol, it's risky to use if you want my opinion.
I've only seen it performed once in combat, in a duel. The practitioner missed his kicks and resorted to his Jiu-jitsu skills. If I ever find the vid I will upload it. It was apparently outlawed during Brazilian history as slaves used it during revolts so its use is documented.

Oh Capoeira is effective. It seems like they are mostly focusing on Regional and not Angola style.

look up Lateef Crowder versus tony jaa. you will see capoeira used in a fight effectively. It is an effective fighting style.
