Hi lanny .I am Pramod From India. The project is very nice. I liked it very much. I wanted to know the construction of the magnetic needle part. Can you give details about how to construct the needle part
That's very clever, has anybody else done the magnetic platter? It could be a real winner, don in sturdy plastic, to make portable modular unit maybe?
@wdharvey1 listen I'm 23 alright let's get one thing straight my record player broke I need a replacement for a couple weeks besides I'd never use my favorite records on this just the classics that weren't that bad if u would could u recommend a place to buy a new record player thanks no hard feeling right
I DEFINITELY appreciate what you did, and as well as you did it, as a science project! it was PHENOMENAL! ...but, do you know what you have done to your mother or fathers album when you put that piece of wire to it? (just kidding...you did a GREAT job! HATS OFF!!!)
Hey dude this is awesome I looked online for record players boy their expensive but this is the solution to it if u could give me details ad instructions on how to do this i would be very grateful I hope u get an a u deserve it :) please message me PSP2GUY
@PSP2GUY dude...you can get a record player for less than $100 at any electronics store...or even a pawn shop..now, are you being sarcastic, or what? WHY would you really WANT one of these things...? Granted, it's an EXCELLENT project, but it is NOT for CONVENTIONAL use...you sarcastic sob...
This is so cool I've looked online for record players boy there expensive but this is a solution can u send me a message and details how to make it great project I hope u got an a u deserve it :)
@Basjuhdeuil I mean, I didn't only do this every day for the summer...I didn't plenty of other things, I just meant that I started at the beginning of the summer and finished it at the end.
@Basjuhdeuil oh what, everybody has to to drink beer at the beach and ogle the oposite sex in the summertime... i call that wasted time...if there wheren't people spending quality time on their inventions you'd still be living in the stoneage dude ..just sayin' :-)
ok man, the turntable is great but if you don't mind some peace of advice... replace the positions of the magnet and the coil cuz' the magnet is heavier than the coil and it vibrates harder also try using a shielded cable for the tonearm to prevent amp buzz, if you can't find one thin enough use a single wire and wrap it with tin foil...other than that great job!!! :)
@GeorgiMl YOU gave GREAT advice! This is this young mans project, and he did a wonderful job! so many people here are being so sarcastic, they don't even know what he put in to make this project work....Here's my sarcasm, but it's also possibly true: he got an eagle scout merit badge for this! Please let me know...SMART KID!!! LOVE IT!!!
@homePicShow1 Well, I only made the record player, not the record itself. So unfortunately I don't have answers to your questions, but there are some great videos of what you might be looking for - a lot of people cut into the plastic of CDs.
@lannydipsitz why in the world would anyone think they could duplicate this same method for CD's? CD's have a MUCH higher RPM and would NEVER work on ANY record player, no matter WHAT they did. CD is LASER read, 1's and 0's...NO needle knows how to pick that up without a processing unit...period...and to those of you who think you can? I'm not that gullible...get over it...
@homePicShow1 oh, get over yourself. This is a homemade machine. it said NOTHING about "blank vinyl" or a "cutting machine". The end product is NOT in stereo simply because he doesn't have the correct stylus. you are so condescending...this kid WORKED on this project...who are YOU to bring THAT shit to the table?
I went from one end of the battery to one side of the switch, out the other side of the switch, to one side of potentiometer through the other side, to one side of the motor through the other side, and then back to the other end of the battery.
@ror3dracer01 :) good call. You're right, I only used two of the three terminals and so it is a variable resistor and not a potentiometer for my purposes.
@ror3dracer01 if you want a consistent speed motor, wire in a small transistor, with the potentiometer feeding to the "collector" pin of the transistor, 12v+ going to the pot and transis-base, and the emitter terminal from the transistor to the positive terminal of the motor, then wire in a switch, and run it back to the negative battery terminal...
@kurama121 It does a bit but any needle wears down records over time. I didn't put my favorite records on this, only records to test it out. When I actually listen to my favorite records I put them on my store bought record player.
That's pretty cool! But I'd imagine that your metal needle will destroy a vinyl record very quickly. Maybe you could grab a ceramic cartridge off eBay & blue-tack that to your tonearm.
Yes, there are many additional things that would prevent scratching- the needle really isn't steady enough to stay in the same place if you moved the record around even a little bit.
Are those the old glass ones? I would try except the only grammophone record I have is in very good condition and worth a bunch of money- I wouldn't want to scratch it up with this. The only problem might be that they tend to be a lot heavier than standard vinyls and the motor mechanism I have probably would not be able to support the weight- even when I experimented with a little bit extra weight tone arm, it prevented the record from spinning at a fast enough speed.
That's very smart!A working homemade record player!!Kudos! Sal

That's very good. You did a great job constructing your magnetic phono cartridge. But can you explain how the direct drive turntable motor works?
TwinMillMC 7 months ago
@TwinMillMC Looks like it's friction drive, you can see the motor when it's playing. Just a wheel that drives the on the bottom of the platter

"see how it sounds" - You can hear with your eyes?
Nilsfried 7 months ago
@Nilsfried I suppose the meaning I meant in the video for "see" is covered under Google's 10th definition:
"Discern or deduce mentally after reflection or from information; understand"

@Nilsfried Do you REALLY give THAT much of a fuck?

What is the resistance value of the potentiometer that you use for the speed control?
What is the speed range, can this also play 45rpm records?

Is there a tutorial on how to make a cutting machine?
Were do you buy blank vinyl from?
Is the end product in stereo?
Are the vinyls produced quiet compared to professionally cut ones?
So many questions
;D
