Well before it wasn't common for a man to carry a bag, but now its pretty essential like for a woman, man carry today more thing with themselves that all cant fit in jeans pockets:) so i say its for useffulnes.

I do agree that I carry loads of unnecessary stuff in my Alpha M65, but that's combination of "because I can" and camper mentality (flashlight does come in handy, but not that often :))
