  • People what do you expect? It's a school project. I think its pretty good.

  • I have to say, I really like this short film. I think it captures the intimacy of the characters in the novel and the acting is really quite good; the guy and the girl :-)

  • heyy just curious what is the name of the classical music played at 0:24

  • Why did you choose this part of the book? Also did you just do this one scene or did you do more?

  • An attempt.

  • THANKS for doing this!!!!!!!!!!! I read the book and it's awesome to watch it :)

  • WHY IN THE FUCK HAVE YOU DONE THIS!? I FUCKING HATE YOU NOW.

  • great acting! I love it! AWESOME

  • it's not that bad.. just porr cinematic and audio effects.. maybe with more budget it will be better..

  • I loved it! Yeah, my interpretation from the book's subtleties was a lot different, but I love it, and I'm glad you've taken the time to make something of it:) Thank you.

  • lol what a poor acting. These people killed the book.

  • keith jarrett - blame it on my youth. great choice.

  • Bad acting but I love this scene come to life. It's kinda funny how she over reacts.

  • They simply killed the book with this movie. Terrible Acting!

  • I want beef and green peppers

  • i don't remember kumiko being such a bitch or dramatic in this scene but yeah it's a little bit too overdramatic imo

  • nice try! :)

  • It just doesn't seem right...doesn't capture the essence of the story...need japanese actors...it would have been more believable

  • yea. american interpretation aint the real thang

  • the acting is so bad.

  • I've just finished this book! It is truely a masterpiece! I think this is where I started to wonder about Kumiko's loyalty to Toru. She freaked out about these small things making excuses cause she tried to make him, probably , dislike her so she won't feel so bad about leaving him.

  • yah spolier! lol

  • Totally....lol

  • coincidences... I started the book yesterday and was reading this scene which is amazing. I also thought of making it into a short...

I am sorry to say that but the scene you created is so much away from the essence and mood of the book.

you managed to make a great scene look like soap opera.

sorry again, but if you are into cinema, you should really look into that..

  • I'm reading the book now and it's just great ! I reckon it would work well on screen . It reminds me a bit of David Lynch's characters in twin peaks , they could be seen as bizzarre but these characters are so much more concrete and have actual reason and meaning...love the book

  • Wow! Well done guy - that was a close brush with PMT.

BTW Do you know why they call it PMT?

Because Mad Cow Disease is already taken.

PS I'm allowed to tell this joke - I'm a woman!

This was nicely done. The guys speech could have been a bit more natural but on the whole it came off very well.

  • how this is supposed to ruin the book I don't know. good job :)

  • this clip is not so good. it made the book look bad. I LOVE THE BOOK SO MUCH... you guys did a horrible job.

  • nice one - and I was ready not to like it cause this is a fav book of mine - but you managed to bring the scene to life - good

    scene choice !!!! evan

  • I thought this was well done and pretty well acted, but I feel like the essence of Toru and the tone of Murakami's writing got totally lost. :(

  • Ahh lol I loved this book so much, I just started reading it again :] Nice to see that other people enjoyed it as well.

It's kind of weird with Caucasian actors, but it's kind of nice and refreshing too. Good job acting on both parts as well! Keep up the good work!

  • I am, by no means, a film critic. I fell in love with Murakami after reading this book five years ago. Ever sense I cannot get enough of the man. The book itself, I consider sacred and you my friend did a very nice job adapting this scene (however odd it may be to choose it) to the screen.

  • I'm reading this book now in Japanese. I think your film is pretty good. We need more films like this based on good books.

  • Not bad. The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is unfilmable but you've done an ok job with this scene

  • This is a note from a filmmaker.

Thank you all for your comments. This is a student project. I made this film because I loved the book. I didn't mean to ruin the book, of course.

I know that the book is really great, my film not.

    I appreciate your patience.

  • You didn't ruin it....

  • i just hate this....ruin such a great book

  • Give it a rest.

  • I liked it, I think it was well done :)

  • there's this one part in which seems that Toru's gonna throw the bottle at her and dump her body in the well.

His speaking is way too agressive than it should.

  • bad acting

but the book wasnt boring at all!

  • wow! it is more boring than the book!

  • dude. wind-up bird? boring??..nooo omgash

    srsly. i OBJECT to that.

haha.. oh well. we all have diff tastes

    -hardcore murakami fanatic-

  • try reading Kobo Abe if you want a better ride.

  • Don't you have anything to do besides being a critic on youtube. You attacked Haruki Murakimi on another video and now you're back but on another video. I really don't see your point in even leaving a comment. It's clear that you despise the man for your own possible reasons (which I can't seem to understand). Am I going to find another comment by you insulting Murakami again on another video? This is just pathetic. You are just pathetic.

  • ok continue liking your chinatown fella. knock offs are after for the folks who cant afford the real stuff. Enjoy your Rouis Buitons too.

  • What is there to afford? You don't even sound persuasive or intimidating at all. I found more comments by you promoting your "recommended" authors while attacking Murakami. Opinions are one thing but stepping on others to gain some sense of importance is another. Let the viewers enjoy this video without your one-sided biased opinions. It's like Murakami slaughtered your household or something. You clearly hate him not only as a writer. That's something I can't even get at. Just lay off?

  • i really liked the scene but i didn't believe the actors.. sorry..

  • sorory, but i don't think this captures toru's character

  • toru and kumiko are japanese!

  • it is magical realism for christ's sake. the adaptability is in reference to your own person. his "nonsense" seems to just be above you.

  • your genres escape your scope

  • The actress is excellent, the moment she step in, it made the scene.

The guy however, should read the book and actually feel the character.

  • Thank you for your comment! I agree! He wasn't good. It's also my directorial mistake that I couldn't get better performance from him. I shot this three years ago, and now I can do much better.

  • First of all there's nothing "absurd" about emotions in Murakami--emotions are the driving force, the only thing we can latch onto. That aside, I disgaree about some of the acting. I actually think the woman needed to be *more* exasperated and frazzled in the beginning. Her words say one thing but she means another: I want out of this marriage, I'm leaving for good tomorrow, etc. I think it's hard to capture the emotional "space" in Murakami on film. Thanks for posting this!

  • good job. I remembered each and every word. But um...i didnt think they'd raise their voice as much...

    4/5

    peace

  • poland love Murakami. Thanks for the vid:)

  • Glad to know it! Thanks for letting us know!

  • Well said, willartrobinson. Apart from his short stories, I have read all his novels and am currently re-reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. It is my favourite novel.

  • A wonderfull adaptation. You capture the essence of 'humanity' within the lines of Murukami...not overacted. The absurdity of Emotion is reflected within Murukami's novels.

  • The actress did an excellent job! I do agree with some of the others, that the emotions came off a little too strongly. But other than that, it brought back memories from reading the book quite nicely. I can't wait to re-read it.

  • Thank you for your comment. This is a student project. The teacher of the class, known director, Jeremy Kagan, said the performance of the actress was great. So anyhow, I agree with you. She's excellent. It's just my directorial choice to make her being very emotional.

I'm originally from Japan, and has been big fan of Murakami for 20 years. It's wonderful that people around world read his books and love them.

I hope you enjoy Murakami's book again!

  • There is too much angry in characters, I don't remember Kumiko's crying in the book. I think this should be a little less noisy, not so expressive. And why they hug each other at the end??? It's silly, like in cheap hoolywood movie. What is really great? Music! Good choice, Keith Jarret is really in the Murakami's style :-) Thank You for this film, and good luck with other projects.

  • I agree with you on the last part of the film. It does look like "cheap hollywood" stuff.

I'm glad that you liked Keith Jarret. I liked this music, and thought that it's good for this scene.

Thank you very much for your comment.

  • Hi! Firstly: I love this novel and I have had my own imagine of this scene in my head. It was different, so my first feelings when watching film were bad. But then I tried to look at it more open minded. And I must tell You that I found it good. What is really good - DETAILS, like beef, beer, paprika, the furnitures in whole kitchen, the cloaths. What is less good - how do they play. In my opinion there is too much feelings in this film. I didn't thought about this scene like that.

  • Thanks for your kind note.

I don't think it's so bad that actors have emotions, but probably they should be shown in more subtle way.

  • There is none of the feeling of the novel here, I think this was a useless waste of film.

The point of the book is the magical feel of it, not the plot which is but an excuse...

  • Thank you for the comment.

  • I completely agree.

  • Thank you for the comment.
