The goalkeeper, Shilton was actually one of the best keepers in the world ever but by 1990 he was too old. Was past his best. During the semis against Germany he couldnt stop the lobbed goal as he lost the spring in his legs...also the penalty shootout..he guessed to dive the right way but again...couldnt reach... A goalkeepers peek age is 30 and remain able until sometimes into their 40's (david james). Dips in form lead to keepers underproforming for long periods of time ( paul robinson).
I think paul robinsons lack of form was merely psychological. Nothing to do with ability as such. I think confidence is a huge factor with goalkeepers. A couple of mistakes (one because of a bumpy pitch) and the public started questioning him and subsequently his confidence dropped. I still dont trust James as even in his prime fitness wise it was his decision making that lets him down.I still see him making dumb decisons and at International level we would get punished.

In addition, Italy could have been awarded a penalty since the England goal keeper apparently fouled on Baggio at the beginning.

The goalkeeper, Shilton was actually one of the best keepers in the world ever but by 1990 he was too old. Was past his best. During the semis against Germany he couldnt stop the lobbed goal as he lost the spring in his legs...also the penalty shootout..he guessed to dive the right way but again...couldnt reach... Was a shame because we played well in that match. Cant believe it wasnearly 20 yrs ago..

A goalkeepers peek age is 30 and remain able until sometimes into their 40's (david james). Dips in form lead to keepers underproforming for long periods of time ( paul robinson).

I think paul robinsons lack of form was merely psychological. Nothing to do with ability as such. I think confidence is a huge factor with goalkeepers. A couple of mistakes (one because of a bumpy pitch) and the public started questioning him and subsequently his confidence dropped. I still dont trust James as even in his prime fitness wise it was his decision making that lets him down.I still see him making dumb decisons and at International level we would get punished.

ps. shilton was such a dumbass goal keeper. a hockey goalkeeper would hv done better.

@loosecanon79 its just a way of consoling whoever lost the semis... like a bronze medal.. better than nothing italy played great football in this tournament and went out in a penalty shootout against argentina ( a way weaker but lucky ass team) same can be said for england who was >>>>germany at the time and yet lost to penalties, this was a way of comforting england and italy by giving them 3rd and 4th place so everybody knows at least how hard they worked. and only JUST lost it.

yeah....Argentina was lucky. but Italians didnt deserve to win in naples. Italy had not been put to test until the semis, infact they hadnt conceeded a goal till then. Italian got a little overconfident after taking the lead. At 1-1 they just couldnt figure out to get back into the game. England was better than germany on the night, but germany were the best team in the WC. They beat a very strong yugoslovia, czech and the dutch.I still blame shilton for englands loss.I dont watch 3/4 playoffs.

Baggio's first goal was actually offside when the ball played through to him he was just in front of the last defender with Shilton in no mans land something i've not noticed before but the reply show it clearly, might have been a different outcome had the linesman spooted this.

shilton was the reason england didn't win this world cup...shocking display v germany in the semis when he didn't even get off the ground for their deftected first free kick goal vs brehme - most english 1st div keepers would have saved that one, and then in the pen shootout he went on to not even dive before any of the pens were taken, trusting instead his 'reactions'..aged 39! ridiculous. england's greatest opportunity to win the cup blown by an overrated keeper.
