You don't understand Glass Steagall.

Glass Steagall was passed to separate commerical and investment banking, because the 1929 crash wiped out the savings of millions because of investment speculation.

When it was repealed, we again saw banks using people's savings to invest in mortgage backed securities and derivatives that would have been simply illegal under Glass Steagall. The only reason your savings weren't totally wiped out--the FDIC (created by Glass Steagall) protects you.

Banks are SUPPOSED to invest savings.

Banks were forced to make dangerous sub-prime mortgages that were nothing more than ticking time bombs.

And since the Federal Government forced banks to make these incredibly bad mortgage loans, they had to make it possible to pass the risk onto the US taxpayers through Freddie and Fannie Mae, who were virtual federal entities.

Don't blame Glass-Steagall for the consequences of the Community Reinvestment Act.

Loans from CRA are a tiny percentage of the total subprime mortgage crisis. All the bad loans in the US don't add up to more than a few hundred billion dollars.

The crisis came about because banks were bundling and selling these loans over and over, making a 400Billion problem into a multi trillion dollar problem.

Banks need to be regulated so they dont lose your life savings in risky investments. Thats the difference between commercial and investment banks that existed under glass steagall.

The stupidest investment banks ever made was giving hundred-thousand-dollar mortgages to people they nicknamed 'NINJAs' (No Income, No Job, no Assets).

But you don't condemn banks for poor mortgage lending.
