Do you think that not closing the Falaise Gap faster had something to do with this debacle? Me thinks so!
I've heard about the allied success at Falaise but truth be told around 50,000
german troops escaped that encirclement to fight another day.
You can destroy tonnes of equipment but if you don't destroy the main ingredient of an army (its soldiers) you'll pay the price down the road as the allies did in Holland.
@HoustonGD its videos like this that keep me up way past by bedtime, i see one more documentary on the side bar and another hour goes by, and then I see another one and click on that one and then another hour after that. I gotta check out your channel, gotta love the 480p resolution, looks good.
Check out the book MY COUSIN KILLED HITLER, based on the story of Marshal Zhukov. It tells a family secret about him. If only Hitler knew that one of those he hunted became the hunter instead.
Well, hindsight is 20-20, but I think the main flaw in the plan was the advance up a single road, without guarded flanks, and with no ability to quickly bypass obstacles.
they landed to far from arnhem and the british had to be dropped in more waves cause there was a lack of airplanes giving the germans time to weaken the first wave so hard and take defensive positions to just wait for the 2nd wave
I would like to make one more statement, and I don't wish to offend anyone. But if it would have been th other way around, let's say the allies had occupied Holland and the germans the 'liberators' (god forbid...), I tell you if II -SS Pz. Corps, fully armed, had the role of XXX british Corps and the Fallschirmjäger were trapped in Arnhem like the brit para's were:100%, II SS Panzer Korps would have pressed onrelentless and regardless. They would have reached that bridge to free their mates.
Market-garden depended too much on: "When everything goes well for us.....". And I have to remark, they were pretty lucky, because everyone talks about two SS Pz. Divisions (9th Hohenstaufen & 10th Frundsberg), but both divisions were at not more than 40% of their normal strength. Frundsberg's ALL its heavy Panzers were allready loaded on a train to Germany for big maintainance and refitting. Only one Tiger -Abteilung fought in Arnhem. Assault guns (Sturmgeschutz) took the brunt of the fight
Yes the II SS Panzer Korps was probably that strength. However, many other Heer and parachute units where involved in Market Garden. This operation proves that when an operation is planned in 1 week it will most likely fail. The combat air support was really a full-scale disaster.
Yes you are right Houston, I never understood where the C.A.S. was during the fighting. Maybe because in Arnhem itself, the fighting was at very close quarters, urban area, with not a real 'clean' frontline. A lot of people think all fighting was in Arnhem, but along the borders of the corridor there were really heavy battles going on. The germans trying to cut off the corridor and allied flank units trying to prevend them doing so.
Id recommend seeing The War of the World series by Professor Niaill Ferguson for a different viewpoint and Hell in the Pacific, both on the Youtube TVShows.
I agree but don't forget, the German border wasn't far away. Once things got hot, the Germans could rely on reinforcements...I think the the Germans had battalions in Münster in reserve...
This is my very unprofessional opinion, but I think this operation was far too ambitious and relied on sheer luck and turning blind eye to any Intel which they didn't have in the first place. Combined arms of Western front were capable of much more than massive drop of light troopers to massacred by Panzers without air cover they have had in France. I don't understand why help the Germans who had absolutely no real capability to sustain a real, lasting offensive under allied airspace.
This plan, although brilliant, innovative and ambitious could hardly be accomplished in 7 days. This operation needed months of detailed planning. When a large scale operation isn't planned correctly everything seems to break down.
@Borpiast It was a risk worth taking, everyone from Eisenhower down agreed, it almost succeeded despite all the mistakes made in planning and execution and compared to the Hurtgen Forest offensive - which also suffered from bad planning, bad execution, bad intelligence, bad command decisions and suffered around twice the casualties of Market Garden and wasted far more time and material for lesser gains - it come up smelling like roses.
Thats because it cost over $100K to rebuild an authtentic Tiger I and the Tiger I in Savinng Private Ryan is actually a T55 and the only working Tiger I in existenace is located in the Bovington War Musuem in th UK.
Exactly and I just remembered another Mock Up Tank that was commonly used in another movie "Red Dawn, The Collector's Edition", and All the Russian Based Tanks in that movie were actually M48 Patton Tanks, in the same DVD its explains the build of those tanks.
1,Montgomery was typical an English General
2.He was a chicken already proven in Sicily
3.He did not want to listen to experts as the Dutch resistance
4.He did not want to take advice from foreigners who did know their country
5.He was responsible for 6 months more War and the death of millions.

Thats correct! Many mislabel this tank as a t-34 conversion. Far more T-55 exist than T-34s.
