Great vid. 2 notables beyond the obvious great ride by Cancellara:
First, the unsung stud muffin is the FdJ rider Ladagnous. In the break for the last 100km, rather than sit up when caught, he digs even deeper and tries to bridge up to Cancellara (at 0:39). A superhuman effort!
Second, the QuickStep rider leading the chase flicks his elbow (at 0:28), then stops pedaling altogether, waiting for someone to pull through. No one does, an insurmountable gap opens, and Cancellara wins by a hair.
This is the SECOND best finsih I have ever seen. The only better finish I have seen, was one I had the front row seat in, when I won Mount Perry. As a sprinter I climbed over to Hors category climbs with the some of the best climbers in the business, both coming in the last 20km. There were just six of us left, I was sucking in the big ones before blowing the field apart....2nd place was Daylight, followed in 3rd by the spares vehicle....I forget who finished 4th and so on.
@TheCrocHunter1 That is the SECOND best story I've ever read. The only better story was one I told last week. It blew my listeners away. Their brains melted, ran out of their ears onto the floor, then burst into flames. You're lucky I refuse to repeat it.
This was just so damn impressive. The only thing similar I've seen in 20+ years of watching the tour was Vino winning in Paris. You've got to be so damn strong to beat a whole field with 2 dozen sprint specialists. Even Chuck Norris was impressed.
@cyclistboy123 That was my thought.. he is not sprinting and he is only out of the saddle for a very short time to get more tempo, then he sits down again... I think the rest of the peoloton thought it was an optical illusion too
@karldiesen well, on Swiss Tv he said that he has to be very careful with his weight training. Because of his genetics he only has to "look" at weights and he already builds muscle.
I don't think the hands relevant in this clip. He's not sprinting. He's finishing his "1 km time trial" where as the others are actually sprinting and therefore have a different grip. I don't believe he dopes his bike and I think it's ludicrous. But it's a great way to start a conversation about cycling.
I think he is accused for cheating juts because he is holding hes hands so strange, in this sprint is he tho only one that is holding the hands high on the steering and over the mechanism for the brakes.
Who cares what wattage, what cobblestones, who was tired, who was not, was there a tailwind, was there not...the fact is the Yellow Jersey rode off the front of a Tour de France sprint finish and won the stage.....the best win of the decade, perhaps all time.....Cancellara is the strongest and greatest rider of all time.
but wat about mcewens win the previous day, or cavendish's milan san remo, or cancellara's prologues in london and monaco
obviously to just ride away from the field over the last kilometers is something few cyclist could do, but i dont know if its the best win of all time or the dacade
i mean im a fan of cancellara though - look for him to win the prologue in rotterdam next year and beat chris boardmans record for the fastest ever prologue
Now, there was no good train and the stage was 232 km in lenght, so less could perhaps do it. I dunno what the wind direction was like either, and he had a little bit of slipstream on his way.
Normally it's just impossible to complete a move like this with a straight road.
To comment your claim, I'd like to remind you that the world record at 1km is a little below 59 secs. That is, with STANDING start. What kind of wattage do you think that is? Cavendish does 2500+ watts over 200 metres...
700? You gotta be kidding me. With an anaerobic threshold at 550 watts he can push 700 for like 6-8 minutes. He pushed about 1000 here. Particularly the acceleration process is a pain in the ass. It has to be very powerful, cause if you get a leadout guy at your wheel just once, you can forget it. That's why counterattacks work best. An example is how Fabian won the Milan-San Remo last year - he countered a move by Landaluze with 2 km to go, and with the speed already high, it was game over!
