Sorry to ask but one question is how do you know what is the I III or IV is in the what scale you are playing? So if it was B would it be B D F#? If someone can explain to me in a little more detail i would appreciate it. I know a bit about music theory not a lot but i really plant to take some more classes for a better understanding but if someone could help it would mean a lot
I think the best way to learn songwriting skills is to study and work out other peoples songs, analyze the intervals and what makes a chord and melody sound certain ways, i think the best attribute is a good ear and an understanding of the instrument you choose to play, people tend to over analyse everything, and their brain gets in the way.
@guitdude09 You mean how to not drink don't you? I'm an expert at that too...Get with The Houle's or Citron for songwriting hints....hero shits on DT...
Hey, you're revealing all our secrets here - you'll be kicked out of the songwriter's brotherhood, hehe. But honestly, your video is a good starting point for those who want to write their own songs. I hope it will encourage people to be creative :-).
Hey Andrew, I just wanted to say THANKS for all you do in regards to lessons and music information. As someone who has been playing since 17, but still trying to 'get it' on some things, I think that your lesson will be a big help to me as I am able to watch and learn. I am 40 now and am looking to start really writing and recording some of my own stuff... So thanks again for taking the time to do what you do...
I remember when I was playing around and played that sort of sequence. "Hold on... this sound like a Maiden song...wait a minute, it sounds like ALL Maiden songs!"
thank you for this video! i started writing instrumental songs to upload on YT but it took a long time to figure out what was missing in my songs. now i have a guideline. Thank you Andrew!
Excellent video I am starting to realise how little I know.john many thanks

@guitdude09 Maybe you should pay better attention to guys that have written good songs??? Your influence might be lacking in hit material???
one4technique 10 months ago
@one4technique maybe you should stick to things you know a lot about, like drinking.

Are you gonna include the song as a whole in your next video?
skateracl 2 years ago 2
Hi skateracl,
The next video is about adding the vocal (or instrumental) melody. I was planning
to have the song as an MP3 Jam
Track on the next video.
I thought it would be really cool if
viewers could compose & record their
own melodies (and guitar solos) using the MP3 jam & then re-post on their channel.
I'd really like to showcase those on a video here in the future.
Thanks for watching,
Andrew W.

if e resolves to f#m in the bridge how do you resolve to the a major tonic from f#m bridge?
jsaic 2 years ago
Hi jsaic,
I did it in the example song with "D maj." going
to a "D sus2." Then, to the "A maj."
But, you also use the E major chord, or another cool thing is to up that V chord to
7th chord harmony and play an "E7."

if you're starting on b minor does that make this dorian mode? and how do the modes apply to songwriting?
