@heyitsgav hey i was standing next to the dude who got the paper, were you him?
a big dude, afro, dark skin, black t-shirt with a mostly red mars volta design on the shirt. i spoke to that dude right before the show, me, my two friends and his girlfriend were there
Haha he was a hardcore volta fan. we actually spoke to him during the set, he was pretty chill. he even had a custom made volta shirt haha. but yeah it was a pretty dick move. and yeah he handed it out and our imaginations can only tell us what was written on it. i bet the guy has it framed lol
Were you there? Did you happen to see the girl who got punched in the face right as Volta went on? They were boo'ing Volta because Bloc Party got kicked off early so they could come on. At the end of the set when Cedric handed out what he was writing, my friend almost grabbed it but the dude who punched the girl was holding it as well and she said fuck it I'm not getting punched over a piece of paper LOL

Pridgen would be all over this and it's taking Jon forever to even think of something to play. IMO as a drummer. I see why Omar thinks it's less work to play with Thomas.

this is absolutely terrible. i can't believe you people actually think this is improv. there's no theme development or interplay between the band. they are just making noise. if you want to hear real improv listen to herbie hancock, ivan jones, or a band like Phish/the Disco Biscuits. those bands actually develop jams and create themes . any garage band can do what is done in this video.
@nughuffer00 It's a jam man, there doesn't have to be a theme. That would be considered a composition or a song. You're right on one part though, it is just noise and in my personal opinion it wasn't that good, but I also don't like Phish too. Herbie Hancock is pretty delicious :)
@cavemanfarts its not really jamming but its more grooving, which is absoultly sick. lot of these jams omar already made up and he pops em out every now and then. as for jam bands, i liked phish better than the greatful dead, though you can relax and groove to the dead but phish has more of a youthful feeling (circa 91-95)
@cavemanfarts jamming is like when you play and its all like yeah thats good but grooving is like when youre like oh yeah thats it. i accidently the whole other white meat
@TheFreeshooter It's a pretty thin line if it exists at all. Even trey busts out a lot of the same licks in jams. I've heard it been said that improvisation is just what you've learned earlier emerging at a later date.
i wish more bands would just fucking jam onstage, just like, no setlist, just improve. that's a world i want to live in one day. like the part at i think 9:15-the end of this clip. reeeeaaaallllly cool. i kill kittens
@tarantism They wanted to use the classic opening intro with a fistful of dollars, instead the organisation of the festival put a very happy girl who introduced them... that's why omar said "don't know what that introduction was all about... anyway, so we couldnt think of anything we wanted to play at this...uh thing..."
Cedric was fucking writing lyrics...that guy is insane to make up lyrics on the spot. I guess it isn't that hard when you create lyrics that are about dreams and random shit.
In this world there is the life, the death and The Mars Volta.

Really??? You missed all that stuff? I heard it all in there, and then some beautiful things I'd never heard before. Interesting.
Anyway, These guys rock for just pulling this out for their set, this is awesome.

Shortened version of this song just saw a studio release on Omar's new solo album "Old Money." The song's called "Population Council's Wet Dream."
JefeElMilagro 3 years ago
yeap. i was sooo happy when i heard that part of the jam finally in a record
organizationdisaster 3 years ago
So they never did make up a song. It was all staged lol.
gslopez30 3 years ago
I think they made it up... most of it. And then omar remembered it and recorded it.
But I miss the slow outro thing with the simple little addicting meoldy in the old money version... why does it have to be sp short? :P

I feel like so much of TMV's work either is formulated during live improv or is workshopped during live improv.
