  • people were on drugs watching this 79 saying "yeah ok" it was all true scary .. "dial a number = aol :) hahah

  • he predicted it all.

  • all there anti aging stuff is still effective today! i synthesized, teach and promote what they discuss!

  • He's talking about the IPad and the Kindle, but 31 years ago.

  • This is really awesome footage. What visionaries. @ 02:30 Pournelle just unknowingly predicted the iPad!

  • At 2:35 he basically described the iPad!!!!!

  • Durk Pearson Rocks! I watched him numerous times on Merv.

Why do you think Merv Griffen lived to 82 and still smoked cigs?

He took some of Durk's Advice. Unfortunately prostate cancer

    got him.

Durk Pearson was talking anti-oxidant vitamins in the 70s.

  • I do remember the speak n spell. O what memories... TRS 80's, 5 1/4" disks, Apple IIe and Montezuma's revenge. hehehehe

  • What to Pournelle and Pearson seemed so obvious, was to us at the time really incredible.

  • flat screens were invented in the '60's by a researcher at RCA, LCD displays were out in the '70's from Texas Instruments, and ethernet networking almost ten years old by the time this interview was conducted, but Pournelle had the vision to know how these things would be applied commercially, but he's wrong about not wanting a newspaper or a book; we still need to satisfy the tactile senses.

  • "we still need to satisfy the tactile senses. "

i do agree with you here, but on the other hand, i look at the dumper most newspapers find themselves in and i begin to wonder.

  • LCD's and Plasmas in those days... I thought they were only invented in the 90's!

He was talking about asteroid mining and said we could do it back then... but yet it still isnt even in the pipeline, space could be the answer to all our problems

  • Yeah, Jerry Pournelle was quite a prescient man. He used to write a great column for the old Byte magazine called Chaos Manor. he still keeps an online column. He got his wife a Kindle this last X-mas - you know, one of those small flat book reader things that can bypass the middleman and let you read a book on your own pace....

Hey, he was a few years off, but the tech he spoke about came at the right time, just the gizmo did not.

  • Good stuff but where are all the Merv Griffin videos of

Durk and Sandy? They were on his show dozens of times.

  • I miss Tom snyder, he used to let people talk, unlike so many hosts today who can;t sit and listen.

  • Holy Crap! Pournelle's is one of the most dead on predictions of the internet I've seen from this time period. Thanks for posting this!

  • You're quite welcome, I'm just glad that I found that recording after all these years!

  • Pournelles predictions are interesting. He basicly predicts the internet.
