@epicfantasy - I know that some terrariums need a layer of charcoal underneath. Which plants is this best for? and also, is it true that the charcoal has to be "activated"?
@gks0682 Sensitive plants benefit the most from the charcoal. plants that need cleaner water. And it definitely has to be activated. you can buy it in aquarium stores and pet shops. Otherwise the charcoal will contaminate the water rather than purify it.
@AReptileMan Nope, it can be sealed right up. but you have to watch it closely for a week or two to be sure you have the right amount of water in there.
@ballpython1995 terrarium is for reptiles, amphibians, etc where terra stands for land and rium comes from aquarium since these habitats usually entail both land and water as necessary for proper keeping of certain pets
To make this easy terrarium you can get moss at any store like lowes, home depot. any place that sells plants. And you can use marbles instead of pebbles, probably would look rather nice.
Hard to say. If you can scrounge up the container out of something, find the pebbles and good soil outside you just have to buy a plant and some spaghnum moss, maybe ten dollars total. You could even transplant a nice flowering plant you find outside and bring the cost down more.
oah and i would buy the soil. i've used outside dirt and it brought in bugs with it. the soil has a lot of nutrients for your plant to last longer anyway so it's worth the buck or two
You could easily get the rocks from Dollar General in the gardening section...for only $1. I bought a fittonia for only 2.50 (Walmart), my jar cost 5.99 from TJ Maxx, moss cost 2.49 from Michael's, and soil I got from my parents, lol. So it was relatively cheap and fun to do, lol. To be honest I was a bit frazzled at first because of how messy it was and I had to change the arrangement around about 3 times...
love it!

how do u know when to water it?
can u see the water in the papples?
richard2mitchell 2 years ago
You have to check see if the soil is moist. And there should be a bit of water in the pebbles. Not a whole lot but not dry!

o ok

get a container at goodwill
i've seen potting soil at dollar generals for $2
and a small plant like that won't be any more that $10 at meijer or walmart. they're probably closer to $5 depending on what you get.
you can find rocks outside in someone's driveway when they aren't home or in a creek. they also have some at dollar stores.
so that's like $8-$14 depending on what you get

Do you think that you could actually start a plant in one of those terrariums? What I mean is to raise the plant from a seed.

Should be easy and profitable. If you have an eye for bottle shapes and plants you will do well i think.
