I'm in nursing school, and I can honestly say that it has been brought in to the western culture because of cleanliness issues. If boys do not get circumcisions they risk a build up of gunk and possible infections. These girls are mutilated with old dirty unsterilized knives, and some end up with AIDS because of cross contamination. Baby boys are given suckers with opioids, as well as topical and injected anesthesia before getting cut on! I think you need to do a little bit more research!

Male circumcision is not forced in the U.S. It is highly recommended, but parents of a child have the right to say, "No, I prefer for my child NOT to be circumcised." Do you know what they actually do? It's really not just a flap of skin. They remove all of the labia, inner and outer, the clitoris hood, and the clitoris. This is usually done without sterilization, in barbaric conditions, with a blunt rusty knife or worse still broken bottle. The girls can be as young as 2 yrs of age. They then have their vaginas sewn up and closed for the next 10-15 yrs, causing massive complications. All for what? There's no reason. Help it stop

I'm in nursing school, and I can honestly say that it has been brought in to the western culture because of cleanliness issues. If boys do not get circumcisions they risk a build up of gunk and possible infections. These girls are mutilated with old dirty unsterilized knives, and some end up with AIDS because of cross contamination. Baby boys are given suckers with opioids, as well as topical and injected anesthesia before getting cut on! I think you need to do a little bit more research!

My correspondent family in Mali, who I contact thru an NGO, has a little girl who is likely put thru this awful procedure to become "marriageable woman". She was around 2 when I first saw her photo. Now she's grown up to around 5 and I am sooo sure she will be/ was performed FGM. It is dreadful that a girl I know suffers from this thing that has NO point in doing. actually just to be a smart arse. the foreskin contains around 12000 more nerve endings and some male circumcision can result in the glans being removed which you could say is pretty insane so in extreme cases male circumcision can be just as bad as female,although since this is only far out extreme cases i would agree that many more women suffer from circumcision trauma than men.would someone chadronix to go stab herself in the face i couldnt be f****d

Circumcision on males is not mutilation, it is a medical procedure done for documented religious and medical reasons. The male's penis is not flayed open, his scrotum is not removed, there is NO COMPARISON between that and FGM, female genital mutilation

The pain experienced is almost much equal between a teenage girl and a male infant, because while the FGM is indeed much more brutal the male infant has no pain tolerance and the way the nerves in his body are set up he feels even more pain. Please do not disrespect the women or men who have been mutilated by saying male genital mutilation is justified because of religion or medicine because those who promote and practice FGM also use both of those to justify hurting all those girls and women.

What some sexist males are commenting on is not according to facts. When males are circumsised it enhances their sexual feeling and contributes to cleanliness and natural health, In males only the hood skin is removed. In females the clitoris, skin and surrounding tissues are removed, it is much more envasive procedure which deforms and mutilates. In the male it does not mutilate.

How hypocritical can you be? In countries where females are circumcised it's women who perform it on women. Just remember, not all "feminists" condone male genital mutilation either. And, the procedures we're talking about really are much more severe in female mutilation. Even severely circumsized men can restore much of their foreskin, though many specialized structures are forever lost.

when this procedure is done (in america atleast) on males, the male is a baby and feels little discomfort and there is hardly any blood. When this procedure is done on a female, typically she is about 8 years old and bleeds profusely and in many cultures no anistegia is used, so the girl feels ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!

I think what FABCHICK13 is trying to say is that it's much less invasive for a male to be circumcized than a female. I was in a college class this year where this topic came up - the majority of students in the class (who probably didn't know what FGM actually was) said they defended people's "cultural right" to cut girls.
It was very disturbing, especially since that class was about HUMAN RIGHTS.
I told them that FGM would be analogous to circumcision if circumcising a guy meant cutting his entire dick off.

cooper, the USA is worse because it forces circumcision (a 10 -15 minute op.) on MOST of its baby boys (newborns), and usually without anesthesia. Circumcision traumatises a newborn! Routine circucmcision - whether male or female - is absolutely unnecessary, and removes much erogenous tissue.
Circumcision is rare in Europe. His/her body means His/her choice! Parents have no right to mutilate the genitals of their children, and your doctors shouldn't be performing it on babies.

Male circumcision is not forced in the U.S. It is highly recommended, but parents of a child have the right to say, "No, I prefer for my child NOT to be circumcised." There are people walking around with their foreskin attached Now most babies are circumcised because, honestly, it's a social norm. However, I've NEVER heard of a doc legally performing any operation without the consent of the parent. Long point short, PARENTS, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY NO! LOL. Good ol' Ethics 101.

crysta, you misunderstood: yes, circumcision in the USA is only permissible with parental consent. But as far as the baby is concerned, the procedure is being forced on him. Parents do not co-own their son's genitals, and should not have the right to make irreversible alterations to his genitals any more than to their daughter's.
CIRCUMCISION IS NOT "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"! NO medical society/association recommends it. It is uncommon in Europe. Google "foreskin function". It's mutilation.

They don't even list "potential benefits" - they're not sure what they might be! Bottom line: no medical society recommends it. There are definite risks to the procedure, and statistically these remain UNKNOWN. Therefore, parents are not in a position to make this irreversible decision for their boys. Clearly, the op. is unnecessary.
