This is a raw menacing sound generating immense energy and threat. The voice is distinctive and perfect for this. However The Gallows just sounds like kid wannabes with a souped up sound who basically sound like their playing in a pub. It offers nothing but commecial value.

The Ruts supported the Damned at Wycombe town hall in 1979, thats when Malcolms head met the cymbal of the drum kit. @JollyMrSprite Not alot of people know, but gallows originally covered it for the NME, and they wanted to put it in the charts, but gallows didnt like the idea and this created a massive argument between Frank Carter (gallows) and the NME. The gallows donated the money made from their cover to an anti-racist charity in memory of The Ruts.
Unfortunately the cover got into the charts at no.31.

@frogswallop Gallows are great man, Frank Carter is an amazing frontman (gets in the circle pits at gigs) and they are better than other punk out today eg Blink 182 and Sum41. Do something new original, rebel, be loud but don't copy, don't imitate, and if being louder and more aggressive gets you going. Remember the top of the pops recording was nothing like the vicious hard renditions that old school punk was when played.
I don't know what's with all this hating on Gallows. Both versions are good for their own reasons. This one has a nice early punk/new wave feel to it. But the Gallows cover has a lot of energy, and (I know from experience) is great to mosh to. They're both great bands; think of the cover as an companion to the original, rather than a wannabe replacement.

@frogswallop Gallows are great man, Frank Carter is an amazing frontman (gets in the circle pits at gigs) and they are better than other punk out today eg Blink 182 and Sum41. I think you are getting confused with 'indie hipsters' listening to Foals and Bombay Bicycle Club. This IS the best song out of the two though :D

I don't know what's with all this hating on Gallows. Both versions are good for their own reasons. This one has a nice early punk/new wave feel to it. But the Gallows cover has a lot of energy, and (I know from experience) is great to mosh to. They're both great bands; think of the cover as an companion to the original, rather than a wannabe replacement.
