WOW! What SPECTACULAR SINGING! Definitely the sexiest-sounding Konstanze ever! I never knew she had such a facility for accurate coloratura. I wish she'd sung/recorded more Mozart. Her Susanna is just delicious. She would've been one hell of Donna Anna, I can imagine from hearing this.
Anna Moffo is a voice-miracle. She died in march 2006, already 4 years ago. But....she is still getting better every day!!!!!!!!! All the youtube contributions prove that.
And if still not convinced, try her Verdi/Trovatore d'Amor sull'ali rosee.
I certainly disagree with the comments that suggest that she is too "bel canto" in her rendition of this piece. I have often thought that she scooped too much in non Italian repertoire, however this is very clean of her Italian "isms". It is a shame more Mozart isn't sung this healthily and beautifully. She is truly an artist in every sense of the word.
A lovely rendition. We must also remember that vocal technique has evolved, and what we hear today as a "Mozart" technique is, most likely, not like Mozart heard it in his day. Many male singers sang in falsetto rather than full voice, and instruments were different (softer and more mellow) and it was not like singing with today's orchestras. A good technique is a good technique, and I would say that Miss Moffo's rendition of this aria is about as good as anyone's.
You make me imagine it all so very differently - candles instead of footlights, harpsichords instead of pianos, falsettos instead of sopranos, but I still feel the sense of theatre there -
Whose voice today could recreate that style I wonder?
I think she does a wonderful job for the most part. However, I also understand about "Mozart subtleties". There are many places where she approaches notes from below and scoops into them. Not great Mozart style. However, this was a "tic" that she acquired...it became a regular occurance in almost all of her repertoire. I think her technique was good, but not solid when she was thrust upon the world stage. And her choices were bad...Butterfly?? Her voice?? In her early 20s? NO!!
re 'solid techique' - that phrase sounds like a hogwash when any nowadays singers (i can listen to) are good only if they sound at least a bit 'moffesque'
of her two, most 'revered' (for technique!) contemporaries, one sounded like a vegetable grater, the other one like a damaged vinyl record [you name them both as you like] ... technique - smechnique, either one likes what one hears or not - when i hear Moffo, my fist thought is " i like this"
@brolobear tell me can you sing this? no? then shut your stupid mouth. every singer has to find a way around difficult problems and since it's obvious that you can't sing--then hush your stupid mouth. If stich-randall were here she'd eat you for breakfast.
@ardeladimwit oookay. I actually have to agree with brolobear. Even though this is my favourite recording of this aria, there are certain subtleties mozartian sopranos should implement, and portomento is not one of them.
What are you saying??? What technique is perfect for Mozart??? There are VOICES that do not seem appropriate for Mozart because people think it should be sung 'stepping on eggs' ...and it's all bland and without emotion.
Moffo is a true Italian technique and Mozart's Operas are ITALIAN oriented...even Die Entführung
I am certainly not one of those people who think Mozart has to be done all delicate and whatnot, but I will not go so far as to think that you can apply a complete Bel Canto technique to Mozart and get away with it. There are appropriate "effects" in singing different repertory. Moffo, while a master of the voice, did not sing as much Mozart as she did Bel Canto. Hence, her knowledge of these subtleties may not be as thorough.
Her Susannah with Schwartzkopf is one of the best ever, and her Mozart Arias disk is not to be missed. I think her Laudamus Te is one of the best ever recorded. I wish she'd recorded a complete Abduction.
ATsarIsBorn ... WHAT THE HELL are you talking about?? "never fulfilled her promise"..??? Are you mad or just ignorant of Miss Moffo's career? God! A little knowledge really IS a dangerous thing!
I'm guessing this is from the Mozart recital disk she made c. 1955. She was potentially a major singer then, but never fulfilled her promise. Still, it's a gorgeous disk.

I just ate my own words - I'd said Moffo would bomb at this insanely difficult aria. This is terrific - as good as Sills and Gruberova.

Mi immagino di essere a teatro. Ed immagino il loggione che impazzisce a suon di "Brava Anna". Un applauso, uno in più.

I could not agree more. It is a shame that belcanto technique is often confused with belcanto repertoire.
