um normaly when you do this arent you suppose to beat the blackbelt guy ? mind you he looks good the black belt i mean still 10 years its a long time to get a belt
@thehoax66 great... go to a boxing class and train, get knocked down 22 times in one minute and tell us what you think? IT WILL NOT HAPPEN as you go there to learn, and look here - what did this brown belt learn? That he has a long way to go in bjj??? Well... it was enough to look at the red belt :)
I used to practice bjj and it pissed me off every single time, I remember, I was doing it for 12 months and every time I trained with a black belt he submitted me in 20 sec....
@thehoax66 Not in this gym obviously, I mean as I'm sure you know he's an 8th degree Red and Black belt who'll surely make the push for Red, it would make no sense for him to get submitted by a brown belt for the sake of it, don't have to have a guy win to know he deserves a black, the fact that he even put up a fight against such a higher ranking dude suggests he's worth the black I guess. I recently got my Blue and my instructor is a brown belt under Roger Gracie and I didn't win.
That is sth I have never understood... sparring between a black belt (xx dan) and a guy like this. What is the pleasure for a black belt to submit a 'beginner'? And humiliate him? He should TEST his skills, allow him to sweep, allow him to get to a mount and even if this "master" gets a finish hold, he should continue, let this guy escape etc... BJJ is THE only martial art with something like this... you will NOT find it anywhere else...
That guy is looking at the textbook constantly like he is following a recipe. If he was qualified enough to be a tester you would think that he would be proficient in what he was testing....
Pedro Sauer is real. Don't mistake the smooth execution for weak. Keep it simple stupid.
I have been face to face with some of the best fighters in the world. And Pedro is right there with them. He has my upmost respect. Thanks Pedro for being so willing to give.
i agree with scarred10, the test is bullshit... i'm pretty sure he is just making sure that he knows the basics of the old school self-defense stuff, not the sport side of jiu-jitsu. If you are getting "tested" for your black belt in BJJ, you pretty much already have it, they are just making you jump threw hoops because you're an american. I've never seen a Brazilian "test" for his/her black belt
@BuddyDale it doesnt matter where its from ,its useless unless its resisted. The only thing that makes bjj work is the resistance used in training. The only real things you need to concern yourself with as far as self defense in bjj is concerned are head punches and headlocks standing up and on the ground and both can be trained safely enough with gloves and with plenty contact.Pedro is a great guy ,the test is bullshit, maybe he just wanted to make sure the guy could teach the stuff adequately.
@GRACIEJIUJITSU100 The dudes got a point, it is pretty much gay and pointless with a fully resisting trained opponent. Good luck with it though, what ever you need to think to get you through the night tiger.
this is just a memory test, theres no resistance, complete waste of time.Self defense bjj is putting on gloves and doing gracie combatatives along with very few standing grab defenses. Its impossible to respond 75 different ways under pressure, proven repeatedly.Sauer is a great man but the way self defense in bjj is trained is rubbish outside the gracie academy or gracie miami.
@billysue2 Do you honestly believe that at this point in his time doing JiuJitsu he had never demonstrated his moves against a resisting opponent? If you do, you're a fool.
@epyongt3 these self defense moves are never done against a resisting opponent, its the part of bjj that is weakest as its never pressure tested like the sparring and vale tudo.
oh god... If I am going into Jiu-Jitsu, I am not gonna remember much of this near the end /...

I think it is a great symbolization that even after achieving black, there is still a long journey ahead.

@BuddyDale What's wrong with Barra? Our whole fundamentals program utilizes a lot of the same self-defense moves.

The techniques are "ok," but I would personally prefer to see him in a combative situation. It was actually boring to watch.
