most first aid kits now include either a packet of Neosporin or its generic equivilant. this is an excellent accellarent for your Cotton Tampon. I carry two OB brandon(they are very small in their package) in my general Kit. First aid and many other uses. here in Illinois US cops keep tampons in there med kits they use them mostly on sucking chest wounds in fact we are doing the same in the military and it works so well because it swells on the inside and looks like a mushroom.

@kuleyjr If the Cops are really carrying tampons for the purpose of chest wounds, then they are morons. Chest Seals are less than $15 and actually work. A chest wound isn't a vagina. Tampons have been used by the military, but were broken apart and used as emergency gauze. Even then, it it isn't separated from the wound by mesh and glues to it, causing infection issues.

@jawbone83 inserting anything into a GSW (gunshot wound) is going to create more problems than solutions, direct pressure, and an occlusive layer if Tension Pneumothorax is present, or possible, is all you should do.

@9483Q what do you do if adequate medical attention is not around? for instance with arterial bleeding. yes, i can stop the bleeding, but if im an hour and a half out in the woods, it may be awhile before i can get to a hospital.

@jawbone83 that bleeding is difficult to stop, tourniquets are recommended for the extremities like arms or legs. They are no longer just a "last resort" they can be improvised with a bandanna and a stout stick. then splint the area to minimize movement and chances of the TQ loosening. Learn the symptoms of shock and how or when to treat for them ( i'm not liable for your actions, or any result of them, dont do this unless trained or an emergency, get trained, and learn how to do it correctly.)

Another use for a tampon is to fill an injury such as a bullet hole or a minor gash till you can get medical help. I have both condoms and tampons in my kits. Oh and I forgot to mention that condoms double as great binding material when you need to bind a wound.

We used them in Special Forces as an emergency wound cover.They are also hilarious if you drop one in your friend's glass of beer when he is not looking as 1 tampon will soak up most of a 16 ounce glass of beer, and hit him in the face as he tries to drink it. The string makes it even funnier.

No what I am saying is in your survival kit keep some with Vaseline on, they make a really reliable fire starter. also they burn just on there own but last longer and burn better with Vaseline.

some vaseline on its own isnt going to burn well or long, but a vaseline impregnated cottonball will burn easily and can last for minutes.
