i've been noticing on YouTube many pro & amateur groups/singers doing covers of Beatles' songs, especially tunes created mainly by John L. Those songs like this one by Bowie seem to bring out raw & unadulterated vocals. I'm a longtime beatle fan & i don't mind at all, these covers. Most are done in tribute and are sincere. Don't think they're trying to "compete" with John L & the Beatles. Rather, its pretty cool hearing how the artist essence blends w/fantastic songwriting &music.
All the people hating on this cover know that Lennon and Bowie were good friends and that Lennon is playing guitar and singing backing vocals on this cover?
I don't know what you guys are talking about, this cover is fucking awesome. I wouldn't call it better than the original, but I wouldn't call it worse. It's fantastic in it's own right and deserves more recognition.
I like Bowie but not this cover. No one can do it better than Lennon. No one. I also wish Bowie had left his teeth alone and not gone for the Hollywood false teeth look . They have changed his characterful face, which was a good face.
@howltothemoon101 - Dunno about ur voice dear Jess, believe it´s beautiful, BuT Bowie´s voice iz sure AmAzInG or even as you put it HoT ^_- Happy Weekend ★╚ÍGH† & Ŀ☼√Ξ ♥♥♥.¸¸.•*`*•.☼ ♥2♥ the both ofya^^
@howltothemoon101 No, it's not just you ;-) and his voice is THE most amazing voice ever !! Be careful it can do things to you, I think you already have realized that ;.)
@DoloresHaze84 very true comment.....I posted "God Only Knows" yonks back and the comments i've had on that...You either Luv it or hate it! Covers don't always work but I luv it.........Another track they dis from David version of Nature Boy (George Benson) they always compare the artist but I say look deeper into the atists own style! (maybe waffling, i've had a drink or two...lol) Bowie is my God whatever ;0)
Lennon rated this very highly - said it was how he would have liked to have done it. This is the best cover of a lennon or Beatles song in my view. It has an edge to it that I think we need in addition to the visionary. It is not either - or, it is both....and.
Bowie covre is a totally different take on the song. Lennon wrote it song as a visionary mantra. Bowie never says the mantra and the rythym is disjointed. He sounds angry and defiant like he's trying to convince himself of something in a violent way. I respect Bowie's take as original and artistic but I don't like the departure from the original spirit of the song. It's very good in it's own way. But for repeated listening I like Lennon's contemplative mantra style.
it's the first time ever I heard Bowie screwing up a song. why on earth couldn't he stay away from this beautiful, sincere piece of art with his theatricality and mannerism.
I always liked this version especially because I am both a Bowie and Lennon fan. And that is Lennon singing with Bowie at the end. I love the harmony and the playing off each other. Such strong vocals from both of them.
love PF but i think you are overviewing things here... when echoes was played in 68-69' didn't have the same lyrics, and they even had to change it cause they were tired of being the face of "space rock", so they change the words for something more deep, like the ocean... Anyway, you should see the interviews of them until know, they say that the beatles were a great influence for them, and Gilmour recently even dare to say, that the only other band he would've like to be in, were the beatles
Lennon plays acoustic guitar on this one, it sounds a bit like a lounge disco track (sorry fans my opinion only) I like John's Beatles anthology version.
@budgethemusicsponge How dare you make such a remark! David Bowie is the EMPEROR of contemporary music (not the king, the emperor, higher than a king) and you don't make such gross remarks about an EMPEROR!
Lennon was his hero which is why it was never released as a single. It plays nicely within the context of the Young Americans record. I think it's a nice tribute to the guy.
@naumnn Hey, Nancy from the Bowie boards! Yes, The Gentleman sings with a lot of feeling. All hail the Thin White EMPEROR (never a duke. Bowie is EMPEROR)
@ColdMountainWater SPOT ON! The Bowie vibrato is not working for this song. I like his Pennylane cover much better! Great someone is listenening without Bowie prejudism.
@MrKetoujin I was trying to remember the name of that band/cover. I videotaped them playing that in Phoenix a long time ago. Wish I knew where that tape was, cause yes, their version was awesome live....didn't they do like twenty versions of the rolling stones?
@Woooow86 Rubbish, of course there are incredibly good covers reaching the Beatles or equalling them, but I don t want to waste time on someone who is too overoccupied with the Beatles. But I agree, you can t beat the beatles for being the biggest revolution in pop history forever, but that is something else!
I feel you I didn't like this version at first, it grew on me big time, just the whole "plastic soul" era he did will grow on you big time if you let it. :D
Its funny, when I used to listen to the Beatles I just thought "ugh" when I first heard this cover. I thought he had ruined the song, but I actually prefer it to the original now, it grew on me!
sorry, you looser, lennon wrote the song in 67, they first recorded it in 68, and since floyd recorded in the same studio i'm sure they heard it, and it was first released in 69 on the No One's Gonna Change Our World charity album, sorry, but lennon would never steale from floyd.
rather floyd was pretty much influenced by the beatles becasue they were there wehn the beatles recorded sgt pepper.
I find this is so powerful - much better than the original. And isn't it nice that the author of "Changes" claims that nothing's gonna change his world 8^)
