for those who are critisizing this guy, i think you should have more of a life than harrasing people on youtube. he gave his time so that new mandoline players could learn easy stuff and if you dont want to watch then dont watch it.
@CTeamAwsome We want to watch, we really do. I think that it's noticable that we want to learn Cripple Creek on the mandolin, the thing is, sometimes the way he's teaching is frustrating.
Soooo we're leaving comments so that he can think back on his teachings and maybe get better :)
I do like and appreciate the instruction, but, I do agree with earlier post that for a progression this long, it should be broken down into smaller chunks. Without tab, I cannot remember all of the 20 some odd notes before he starts to real off the tune. But, I do realize just how easy of a concept this is for him. Probably hard to comprehend just how slow some of us beginners actually are.
Telling someone to play the fiddle first and then the mandolin is like doing brain surgery before he learns where the head is.. Geez.. there's FRETS on the mandolin which make it a lot easier to learn. And then theres the bowing which is a whole different art in itself completely different from picking a mandolin. Playing a mandolin WELL is very difficult as I'm learning. Just my opinion and a lot of comments I've heard from would be fiddle players.
@ngzcaz I used to play the violin and I would play fiddling tunes on it to but no instrument is harder to learn or easier than any other. As long as you have a basic understanding of music you can play just about anything. I played the violin/fiddle and I'm having trouble playing the mandolin. You can't tell some one one instrument is harder than the other because in the end it all comes down to you and your dedication.
You should play the violin first, Mandolin and violin fingerings are almost exactly the same, so if you can play the violin well, you can play the mandolin pretty well!
Although it may be hard for you to comprehend, there are a few beginners out there that have not been playing the mandolin since they were three months old......as I'm sure you have.
Or maybe they just don't have the exceptional talent to learn at a fast pace......as I'm sure you do.
So, I respect this musician for his patience and intrest in helping others learn to play......though it appears you don't!
i been playin mandolin for 3 months but i play my uncles cuz i don't have 1. i find it very helpful to write it all down and then play it when get a chance.
I play a little bit of the ukulele, banjo, and guitar and I've been messing around with a mandolin for years, but it's always been the toughest to learn. I'm self taught in the ukulele and banjo, but I had guitar lessons, recently though I've found youtube has really great lessons for guitar and I decided to look for mando lessons too. Awesome videos man, this is right up there with Justin Sandercoe lessons on the guitar.
I'm new to youtube and the mandolin. I don't really understand how you tube works. is it possible to find all these lessons and subscribe to new ones?
just go to expertvillage's channel to find all the lessons, but you'll probably have to search on their channel cuz they have a lot of stuff and you can subscribe to them and whenever a new mandolin vid comes out you'll know. I also play mandolin, never give up!
im just learning mandolin and found this movie very helpful ...though im such a beginner i need a slower version..thats the only song i can play on banjo so gotta be one of the first i learn on mando! thanks man!
Man, this is great! I'd been on the fence about a deal on a Mandolin I'd found. Now that I found these videos, I believe I am going to get it and start learning from you on here! Thanks for posting these.
RM 100F nice case, and seems to be a decent mandolin. I am just starting, so I don't have a lot of experience with mandolins. It had all the right parts in the right places, lol.
I think its wonderful but I really need you to break the chords down for Foggy Mountain Break Down like you did with Cripple Creek. It was invented by Earl Scruggs If you can find time it would be greatly apperiated. I know your kinda busy with your own band THANK YOU
im mainly a banjo player, but im learning mandolin. this video was extremly helpful i was playing it in about 10 minutes! you were awesome. do some more videos please and thank you
I've been playing around with this mandolin for five days now and I really find your videos helpful, easy, and interesting. I've never played a stringed instrument before, but I'm loving it. Thank you :)

Is the Mando a good instrument to begin on a string instrument? Seems tuned like a Fiddle!
Whitelightng 2 years ago
yes, the mando is tuned like a fiddle/violin.

Hi Mike
I'm a semi beginner on the guitar but love the sound of a mandolin, is it of any help to me that I can play most open chords on a guitar?
GORDONL3 3 years ago
no what poeple say is to forget what u no on guitar when playing mandolin
manhunter911911 2 years ago
It probably helps just for your fingering, by that I just mean precision, the chords on the mandolin are different than guitar obviously :P
