@fazilsaycraze both, of course! It takes a choreographer blessed with genius such as Fosse's to produce such brilliant moves, and an equally deft, masterful dancer to do them justice! Especially some of his muses, Gwen V, Ann R, the list goes on...... He's a master. They are all masters. There will never be another Fosse.
Sometimes my brain makes up things like this to make me laugh at inappropriate times, like.... all alone at the doctor's office, during emotional moments of silence, alone on a crowded bus, you get the picture.
OK, I agree the song is lame. As a fan of this musical from way back as a kid, I had no idea why this was even here. Then I learned that it was added for the movie and I'm glad it was. It was just an opportunity to capture on film two legends doing a rare dance together. Does it add to this particular show? No. But it's good to have.

Weird, they are both fantastic dancers but they seem mismatched. She's bold, percussive and loud. He's precise, graceful and soft. She stomps, he floats. The effect of both of them together is disorienting. I want to watch them both but not together.
@riverdaughter3 It has to do with the fact that the routine has to "star" Gwen Verdon's character even though her partner, is her very fabulous choreographer/director husband Bob Fosse. This isn't a recital where everyone is supposed to blend into a seamless mass, its a play, a performance. And here Gwen is the star, her character IS forward, dynamic, dangerous - kinda, she stands out because she is SUPPOSED to!
I've heard that this is one of the most studied pieces of dance ever. That people spend hour upon hour getting the moves right. As a dancer I think it's like a right of passage to be able to do this number.
Most people could practice for years and never achieve the level of perfection of Fosse & Verdon. I think you are born with this talent and can only improve it with years of work. A joy to watch, both, sadly, gone too soon.
Ignore those who need to try and imitate before they can appreciate what Fosse & Verdon did here. Such complexity and precision. The transitions that required complete synchronicity to not have one or the other falling on the floor are breathtaking. All this skill and they created a festive mood to boot! (Kudos to the costume designers for outfits as zany as the song.)

Gotta agree with katATL here. You're (for your sake I hope) a six year old who has no idea what dance outside of your neighborhood dance teacher's studio is.

@Kcat524 All the things you like now wouldn't have happened if it had been for Fosse or all the other greats out there. I don't think I've seen ANYONE win THREE MAJOR AWARDS (Golden Globe, Emmy, and Tony) in ONE year, especially in this day & age. Might I add - Beyonce's "Single Ladies" choreography was inspired by him, she said so herself. When I was 5, I even liked Fosse's moves. He was a brilliant choreographer. Take your disrespect somewhere else, please.
My dance instructor showed me and another girl this routine on VHS and said "I want you all to do this in the recital - let's start learning". It didn't look exactly like this - but I think we did alright!!
So wonderful. We just watched the whole movie, and thank you for saving this to YouTube. Incredible dancing, singing, choreography, plus I laughed so hard I had to wipe my tears several times.
When I was a kid, I saw Gwen Verdon on B'way -- EVERY show she did. I WORSHIPPED her. But now, I watch Fosse dancing in different tapes, and I can SEE why Gwen was his one and only muse. But really, HE was the ONLY ONE who could REALLY do his steps to PERFECTION. He was BRILLIANT. No one can EVER be another Fosse.
There's no possible way that is Bob Fosse. Most of his limbs were visibly turned in. You would be able to tell. And at the end the man says "Good work, Bobby!" not Fosse.
@yabbledudet Sorry...it IS Fosse. He and she did the number on several TV shows of the 50's and there are ample kinescopes of them performing it in the shows. On the BIGGGGGGGGGGGGG screen you can see Fosse's face clearly through the entire number. He choreographed it for Verdon in the show and agreed to do the movie which was directed by George Abbot who had also directed it on Broadway. They used most of the Broadway cast, including the dancers.
Now that's dancing! The one and only Fosse and Verdon. They along with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly take my breath away when they dance. Wouldn't it be great if movies like this were made now. But I'm thankful we've got the classics.
@Fendolis ///As in Wyatt? I always kidded that doin this number/// I think it was just a fun BIT that made cute yet somehow sexy sounds! Just my guess! Love it! THE BEST OF THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!! the Dancin Man
Gwen Verdon wa sbeing interviewed about this number once and there was one thing she said that I really loved. She says she can't jump very high so whenever they are doing jumps in this number, you can't hear it of course but Fosse is yelling..jump!!..at her.
I love how Fossee is in this as well. This dance is amazing!!! I'm not doing the exact dance but i am doing the flip part on " is there a doctor in the house?" SO EXCITED.
I miss when dance movies were made like this. You can see the choreography and see how talented they are. I feel like dance sequences now have too many cuts, making it impossible to see what the dancers are actually doing. I love watching these old movie clips!
@whatabitch88 Absolutely! The DPs (Directors of Photography) don't seem to know how to shoot dance numbers, and neither do the directors. It actually is more work and takes more time to shoot all of those unnecessary cutaways and Close-Ups. In some cases its a means of disguising the weak dancing skills of the performers. The television production of THE MUSIC MAN with Matthew Broderick is a prime example.
@whatabitch88 Actually, it seems that Fred Astaire made the same complaint about movie musicals from the era before his (Busby Berkeley, e.g.). He didn't like cuts in his performances, and that was a change from what they used to do.
@whatabitch88 I agree, check out my favorites or do a search for Joan McCracken in "Good News" "Pass that Peace Pipe," one of the best choreographed dance numbers I've ever seen. McCraken only made like 3 major films what a shame she was such a great dancer.
@whatabitch88 I agree with you absolutely 100%!! I hate it when dance sequences are shot with those horrific cuts every few seconds. There are shows right now (not counting dancing with the stars 'cause really, who cares) but other "dance" shows that have constant cuts throughout entire dance. It is exasperating.
The only reason anyone should need cuts is to disguise the fact that either the choreography or dancing is below par. Really wish they'd stop doing it all together!
Triple ditto. Can we also just get together and email SYTYCD and talk to them about the constantly MOVING cameras also? Who the hell choreographs with moving cameras in mind? Who choreographs with closeups of one dancer when it's a synced pas de deux of some kind, or when the footwork is critical, or when there's a huge stagey face expression that is appropriate for normal stage distance but looks completely ridiculous in a closeup or medium shot?
Note at the end Tab Hunter says "That was terrific, Fosse!!"
An amazingly dance duet which is comic, athletic, and sexy all at the same time- and a clever way to integrate a cameo appearance by the genius responsible for all the brilliant choreography. And even doing high kicks (at 2:56) in tight black pants, Gwen Verdon is a sexy beast.
Gwen Verdon was my idol as a kid. I saw her on Bway in Sweet Charity, and Chicago, etc. But in this dance, my eyes were on Fosse. He not only created the moves, but he perfected them in motion! He is even more flawless than my idol!
Dead serious, I wish I could dance like Gwen Verdon. I really wish I could

This is my favorite dance routine of all times. Fun music, fantastic moves. Bob Fosse was a genius. I was so happy to find this on youtube.
