  • This is probably the wrong place to say I love that sound... I dunno why.

  • the lip smacking sound makes me cringe and my blood pressure goes up...

people do this all the time now, in public places, movies etc.

    anyway, thanks for the video

  • I have it to and I'm always plugging my ears at school so much my ears constantly hurt. But I love saying I have to go to the bathroom, it is such a relief .

  • I also suffer from misophonia, but there is hope. Have you ever heard of schema conditioning psychotherapy? I haven't tried it yet, but it has been known to CURE misophonia. I wish you the best of luck.

  • when i hear really fast typing i get sick

  • Comment removed

  • I might have it but.... im not sure, sometimes people act like it so easy to stop being annoyed by the sounds, "stop think about" they say but its hard!

  • I love this video so much...everything you say, I know how you feel. The sense of relief I feel, knowing that I'm not the only crazy one out there, is astounding. I just wish you hadn't filmed it outside...that wind blowing verges on being a trigger for me. ;)

  • I have this to, and i have the same feelings as you about it! LOL!

  • I think I just found out that I suffer from misophonia and I have since I can remember. I am also 38 years old and lately I have been thinking that I am just crazy. I am at my wits end with this. For me, it is EVERYTHING, chewing, sniffing, snorting (like when you have a cold and you suck in snot from the nose), my house floors popping, my car door clicking, cars driving past my window, gum popping. I can't stand it. I wish I was deaf. Sweet f'ing relief. This is no way to live. I need help.

  • @SuperLowercase, I empathise with you. Are you also annoyed by people who talk with their mouth full, and who talk while they are picking their teeth, and who habitually lick their fingers every time they turn a page? Those things really annoy the crap out of me.

  • @singularityrush, I wonder if the woman on the train who was making the offending sound ( without eating anything ) was suffering from Tourettes Syndrome, and was doing that as a kind of nervous tic.

  • I feel your pain. If you haven't seen this video yet, check it out. I hope it will help you.

    watch?v=N7x3PgpcMys

  • Thanks for posting this. I suffer this as well and it is difficult to function, like you said. Today, I left Linux class early because this dude always sits on Facebook and pounds away on his keyboard. Annoying as heck.

  • Thank you for doing this video. Misophonia needs to get more awareness. I understanding how you feel. For me, triggers included chewing noises, and most recently tapping. Lip smacking annoys the hello out of me too, but it's not yet a trigger of mine, but I can feel it becoming one. Thank you for showing people that how we react isn't meant to be mean, but we just can't help ourselves.

  • Thank you

  • Thank you. Really.

  • ive heard that smoking pot helps. seriously. i heard from a teacher at the college i had attended that this guy who had a problem with the florescent lights buzzing would go out side, smoke a fatty, and was good to go. this was a college of design too, so it was cool i guess.

  • umm well i do it all day i go to school still im jut a child but i have higth misophonia and i cant pup earplug or ipod cause i cant hear the teacher then however the student in my class sneeze cought yawn or other bodies stuff every second so i cant concentrate on anything so during test i end up giving a white sheet of paper cause since everybody is silent i hear the sound even louder ppl think im crazy and at lunch i go eat in the bathroom SOMEONE HELLP ME

  • @nono66b people are going to hate me for sayin this, but i wouldnt go to college if i were you. I have been in college for 2 and 1/2 years now, and it was hell on earth. ultimately, i couldnt keep my grades up, largely due to misophonia. i had also stopped working to become a full time student so that i could concentrate on school work, as it is that i also have realy bad ADHD, and cant concentrate even beyond misophonia.

  • @nono66b at any rate, i have decided to put off school (mabey perminantly) and build up cash with a full time job. i would like to make sure that the college i have taken will not go to waste, so i may end up taking mabey two classes at maximum; whatever i can keep my grades up with.

  • So I read this thing a guy wrote. He said that if you force yourself to hear these sounds for awhile, you won't feel the anger. He plucked up the courage and tried spending the day at work without his iPod or his earplugs. At first he got a bit annoyed but at the end of the day he realized that he spent the whole time hearing the sounds and not noticing them. They didn't bother him! I haven't tried it yet but I will. I'll try at least. You should too!

  • @megustanutellaable must not have it too bad; i mean ive worked out side doing landscaping around all the noises i hate, and by the end of the day (every day) i was STILL HEARING EVERY SINGLE INDIVIDUAL NOISE and being bothered by them just as much as ever.

  • clicking noise at around 1:08 enraged me

  • Well, at least I know now I'm not some psychotic asshole. People notice me giving them furious stares and then I briskly leave whatever room I hear the sound of lips smacking in.

I can't blame them for making the sounds, but for my and their safety, I REALLY have to leave the room.

  • @singularityrush, stabbing someone in the eye is harsh, but I do understand how you feel. If you are going to resort to violence, it would be better to carry a can of pepper spray in your pocket, and if someone keeps making the offending sound, you could say to them to "please stop that", and if they keep doing it on purpose just to piss you off, then you could get them in a headlock and squirt pepper spray in their mouth.

  • you are not alone! im 16. 2-4 years so far. and i guess a long way to go. but hopefully we will all find a cure.

  • I have misophonia aswell.

Have you ever considered playing an instrument? It really helps. I play violin , and ever since I started I have been less jumpy.

  • 'like that' face was priceless, when u described the cow on the subway. wtf, why do people do these things? I totally hear you. Love the fact that the internet has allowed all of us to find others and let go of that guilt we carry for these feelings and reactions, and knowing it isn't our fault. PEACE and love to all of you!

  • Thanks for the video. What a relief to discover that this isn't just 'my problem'. For me, this isn't as severe as in the video, but it has definitely got to the point where it could have had a negative affect on my relationships with partners in adult life.

  • I absolutely can not STAND it when ppl make lip smacking sounds when eating. That's the only time it really bothers me. I literally become enraged. Just recently I walked into a Chinese restaurant to order take out. It was just me reading a menu and a little Chinese girl sitting by the entrance eating lunch smacking away...I lost my appetite and just walked out.

  • thank you so much for making this video.i really can relate. And i agree...i wouldn't wish this on anyone. I, too would rather be deaf and I actually willingly expose my ears to loud noises in hopes that i will some day be deaf.

  • I'm 19 and have suffered with this since I can remember. I only discovered today that this is an actual condition, that I'm not crazy, and that others feel the same as me! I cried when I watched this, especially when you said "I wanna be deaf". I think I've wished I could be deaf for many years and that really resonated with me.

  • I have it. Its definitely more then being annoyed. You become enraged! I have had it 20 years. There is a yahoo group for us.

  • Dude...I so understand. Oh my god.

  • As well as having ADD, I also suffer from misophonia. My triggers are feet tapping, whistling, pens tapping, finger tapping as well as repetitive motion. Though it's gotten better with my humming trigger, it's still so hard to deal with. My parents have constantly said that my aggravation towards these triggers was a power struggle. I am so happy I watched this video and I want to thank you so much for introducing me to information about misophonia.

  • wow. i have asperger's syndrome. i have MINIMAL tolerance for some chewing noises and for sounds people who chew with their mouths open. i was raised "old school" and we weren't allowed to chew with our mouths open, but it was acceptable for older adults. this made big holiday dinners very hard. over the years i have learned some relaxation techniques & i eat many meals alone. i know this is hard for you. :-(

  • Mine goes hand in hand with repetitive movement. both sounds and certain motions (thumb twirling, etc) all have the same effect. Extreme anger almost rage. Very hard to deal with.

  • I always thought I was the only one, too. I can't respond with more coherency right now because my mind is still reeling from the discovery of the word "misaphonia"...finally a name for what has nearly ruled my life.

  • I remember wishing I was deaf as a kid. I'm autistic. I remember seriously considering puncturing my ear drums because everything was so unbearable.

  • I am 16 and I suffer from this. I hate when I hear people at school breath threw their noise and a small whistling sound can be heard after each exhale. It makes me so frustrated. Some other things are gum chewing, mouse clicking, teeth scraping against silver ware and many many more things. I also wish I was death sometimes. The world would be so much peace for me.

  • If anyone is interested I have set up a misophonia facebook page for those like myself who suffer from misophonia. The group is called "misophonia support group". It is basically a page to meet others with this condition and have a place to talk about living with misophonia. I will also post any information I find on misophonia on the page with hopes that maybe one day I will find a way to treat this condition.

  • Thank god I found this. I've SUFFERED from misophonia since I was 11 and I'm 30 now. I didn't even know it had a name. I always thought I just had low tolerance or I need to "grow up" as people have told me before, but now I know it's real and I'm not the only one. I've never met anyone with this condition and it has made y life pretty unbearable at times and I've always felt alone with it becuase know has ever taken it seriously. I'd love to meet others like me so feel free to message me.

  • OMG - the wind!

  • I HATE THE SOUND OF LAWNMOWERS AND LEAFBLOWERS. When someone near my house starts mowing the lawn or blowing leaves it makes me so angry that I wonder if there must be something wrong with me.

  • thank you so much for doing this.. we need more people to get awareness out there, this is so much more serious than it seems to people who do not have to endure this everyday .

  • I have been dealing with this for as long as I remember... your video actually made me cry... (out of relief, not sadness) The part about stabbing the lady in her eye, did make me laugh.. I have seriously had to call mental health number on the back of my insurance card threatening the same thing, with a co-worker who would suck on her damn braces all day.. I called them crying, and also laughing.. because I rationally know this is nuts, but rationale is something I think this disorder lacks

  • Hi,

Thanks to a fleeting news broadcast, I found out about this condition. I, along with everyone else in this world, thought I was crazy and alone. You have had this up for over four years, but I am just now discovering it...gum popping, feet shuffling, money jingling, whistling, humming, pen clicking, tapping...too many things to mention. Thank you to all who are bringing this debilitating condition out into the open!

  • A few sounds have driven me crazy as long as I can remember! I thought it was just me. I fought with my little brother for smacking when he ate. Little dogs can drink water in front of me just fine, but my big dog has to wait for me to walk away! I hate it when people eat a juicy piece of fruit and slurp the juice up in the bite they take! Popping gum..... freeway traffic at a house near the freeway! I also have some OCD and anxiety issues too. Thanks for the info!

  • The fact that you made this video is very courageous. There are many people like us, and I feel that talking about it can be really cathartic and helpful, after keeping it secret for most of our lives. I too had no idea that other people felt this way until this week when I happened on a newspaper story about misophonia. Thanks for making your video, it is a public service.

  • I'm gonna show this to my parents. They think I'm making this up. but it makes mee sooo MAD :(( FINALLY they'll believe me and they won't yell at me, tellin me i just need to leave the room cuz.. im the annoying one..

  • Poignant, and great presentation (if you're only "acting", then you're the one who deserves an Oscar...

My friend and I both have this--we can't STAND certain REPETITIVE EATING and PRE-SPITTING sounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ¿Where's my sertraline HCL?...

Oh, ¿you mean I've already taken my daily dose?--oh, well: I guess I'm screwed, then...

  • LOL I've kicked people out of my cube at work for eating... and my wife has no clue that I sit at the dinner table every night and fight the urge to scream and walk out. Kinda cool that it has a name :-)

  • i say bullshit, i think they KNOW they're smacking their lips....its just bad manners for one thing..nt to mention just downright disgusting...christ people, close your freakin mouth and chew your food, we dont want to see or hear what you're eating

  • i hate all of these sounds and many more.....the lipsmacking and breathing are the 2 worst though.....another one is people who drag their teeth across their forks when they eat...MY GOD I WANT TO shove the fork into their throat and scream into their face " HOW DOES THAT SHIT FEEL MOTHER FUCKER ".....i know it sounds silly, but hell, it is what it is..an annoyance to me.

  • Thank you very much for posting this. No one understands this rage I have towards certain sounds. After 15 years I have a name. I am not just the freak girl who can't stand sounds. I recently graduated from college and I don't know how I made it through classes. Someone always tapping or chewing....ugggg!!!! When you try to explain what the sound makes me feel...like taking that pen they are tapping and jamming it through their hand....people think I'm violent and crazy. So I avoid to cope

  • This disease was on The Today Show and when I watched it, I cried my eyes out. Me and my mom were sobbing. Tears of joy. I have battled with this for 5 years and I'm only 13. I have this very badly. it caused depression, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, insomnia, paranoia, and Isolation. I cry for days. I cried because I thought I was crazy and I thought I was alone. Boy, was I wrong. And I was so glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this. Tears of joy today. <3

  • @girlyandglittery Hey, my mom and I had the same experience this morning when we watched the show. We have a name FINALLY!!! I wish I had a name for it when I was 13, but at least I do now. I am not crazy....WE ARE NOT CRAZY!!

  • I suffer from this too in a really intense way. There is a NYT article about I that describes it so well. This causes issues in my marriage and people don't understand that the reaction is voluntary. Hang in there.

  • This makes me want to cry. I thought nobody understood me until this past weekend. It's absolute torture.

  • Another mouth sound that really annoys me, is made by people who have a habit of talking with their mouth full. On a brighter note, my cat's eating sounds don't bother me.

  • @satiricaljesus You have my sympathy." If you hear of a dude in Australia that mass murdered his girlfriends family while they were eating a roast dinner, that was me." You must have it worse than me. I would advise you to take a less violent course of action, because I don't think the courts would really understand your condition. Another annoying mouth sound that triggers my Misophonia is finger licking ( eg. people who habitually lick their fingers while paging ). BTW, Im from Australia.

  • i have the exact same thing. but i kept thinking about mine and it became a reality. however is it possible that this lasts forever or can it change? really cant take it anymore.

  • Thanks for the video. I totally get what you're going through. I have the same condition - it's mostly triggered off when people within earshot make sounds while eating (ESPECIALLY crunching and gulping aaaaarghhhh!!!!!). My brother and dad are loud eaters and mealtimes were an absolute torture for me during childhood, especially since I had to sit next to my brother. I avoid eating with people as much as possible and it really affects my social life, but I really don't know how to treat this c

  • I have had this since I was about 12. I was home with pneumonia for 2 weeks and all of a sudden i realized my mother always cleared her throat and it drove me insane. I am amazed to find out I am not alone. I agree with people who think there is a control issue involved...if i feel like i can say something it's better for me, therefore strangers are the worst. I cannot go to movies, etc. I also hate certain repetitive movements (knee or foot twitching) that people do. Thank you so much.

  • OH MY GOD lip smacking drives me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!! And when people take a sip of a drink, or do that gulping noise, or swallow in general, or have that 'shlomping' sound when they eat something soft. Gross. omg. So many more to list but wanting to vomit just thinking about it. Thanks for sharing.

  • @NotAnybodyElse I know how you feel. My main trigger sounds are eating sounds, and icky mouth sounds. Quiet or low level eating sounds don't really bother me much, and I can cope with sitting in a restaurant where there is not many people, and the people are eating relatively quietly, and any small noises that are made unintentionally are easily drowned out by moderate background noise ( music, television, etc ). But if people chew with their mouths open, it really triggers my Misophonia.

  • @AspergianSaint I hear ya. My girlfriend and her entirely family all eat with their mouths open, REALLY LOUDLY, it drives me absolutely insane! If you hear of a dude in Australia that mass murdered his girlfriends family while they were eating a roast dinner, that was me.

  • People who make noise eating, or smack their lips or make mouth noise while talking, make me twitch like a maniac! I'm glad I'm not the only one.

  • Respect for you I understand you it's very hard and I loose people..

  • I have also found out, that although Misophonia is a rare condition in the general population, it is very common in those who are on the Autism spectrum. Finding out that I have Misophonia ( April 2011 ) is probably one of the most significant personal discoveries that I have made since July 2004 ( when I found out that I have Asperger's Syndrome ).

  • Man.... I have this too.

Thank you so much for putting this up!!

  • It was only April this year that I found out that I have Misophonia, but I have been aware of the symptoms since childhood. Im relieved that this condition has a name, and that I'm not the only one who suffers from it.

  • what drives me insane (one of them) is when people who KNOW i have this problem will make the sounds ON PURPOSE to tease me. i got reprimanded at work once because the person next to me's "phone voice" made me want to cry and i couldn't stop myself from telling her..it is a crazy thing to try to explain. especially when i don't have great hearing for words but these trigger sounds are so loud to me i cant block them out...

  • i can't believe how much i shuddered just hearing you describe the train situation. we aren't insane, sometimes i can't believe it. yay.

  • aahh can't believe i'm not the only one :'(

  • Dude, I understand entirely. I hate it when people smack their lips, or chew gum loudly, or have a pronounced lisp. My mom does all these things and I can hardly deal with her on a daily basis. It's gotten worse since I was little and it's getting to the point that I don't know what to do.

It's crazy though because I really like other sounds like birds chirping. The birds chirping in the background of your video sounded so nice.

  • I have this too. I feel for anyone who has this. Im glad we're not alone

  • i have the same thing. i'm 24 and i've had it since i can remeber. the sound of someone eating or breathing heavily is by far one of the worst things i can think of. i've had relationships end because of it. thank you for doing this video.

  • the wind in the background bothered me

  • 30 years. I have been dealing with this, thinking I was crazy, for over 30 years.

I now know this is misophonia I suffer from. I also know that I am not alone.

Thank you Scott, for having the courage to talk about this. It is freaking embarrassing...because nobody around you is doing anything wrong...yet everything inside you tells you that they are.

  • i have the same thing dude i know what your going to the same thing even with the lip smaking

  • i have the same thing dude i know what your going to the same thing

  • i have the same thing but its only with my sister

  • I hate school because the sound of my classmates talking enrages me. I hate being home because when my mother talks, it infuriates me even more.

  • I just figured out I have this today. I'm 17 and I hate chewing, gum popping, breathing and snoring and many other sounds! Finally, in a rage, I googled irritability to noises and found 'misphonia' after about 30 minutes and I nearly cried. My hands were shaking with joy when I found that I wasn't alone. That I'm not making this up, that I can't just ignore these noises. I used to leave the room when my family ate. Or I would turn my music up. It's a relief to know that I'm not alone.

  • I have suffered from this condition for a almost ten years..since I was child. I am 22 now. I remember making so many fight with my father because he always used to chew gum loudly and it absolutely enraged me .

  • I have it, too. The eating of potato chips, sniffling, the clank of a fork hitting a dinner plate--these are all sounds that have for years caused me to respond in annoyance, anger and anxiety for no explainable reason.

My situation a bit more selective, though. For example, the sounds caused by strangers and acquaintances rarely encite a typical "Misophonia" resonse. But the sounds of people I'm accustomed to (i.e. family members, friends, ect) can easily encite an annoyed response.

  • I just discovered the term "misophonia" today. My teen years have been plagued by this condition, and I had no idea what was wrong with me. I was diagnosed with OCD because of this horrible hatred of sound. For years, I'd have to tell people I have OCD whenever I snap at them for making gross noises and they don't understand why. I am so relieved to find out I am not alone, and knowing what causes this problem has changed my life.

  • Thank you for this. I have just found out today that this is an actual condition. My own experience is fortunately not as extreme (I become very angry when I listen to my family eating at the dinner table), but it is great to know that I am not alone nevertheless. I really hope you manage to find a way to cope, good luck.

  • a sincere, heartfelt thank you for your story. I completely relate to the subway fantasies that you described and especially the TV reactions, the kit-kat commercials and chip commercials make me scream and throw the remote at the screen.

  • @soitgoes915 Oh my goodness.. thse gosh darn Kit Kat commercials and Carls Jr commercials make me want to shoot my TV... I am so glad you mentioned that.. I either have to mute the TV right away, or I plug my ears and my daughter and I hum really loadly until they are over... the neighbors probably think we are some freaks... but whatever works

  • that scene in fight club where tyler is eating chips on the phone is the only part of that movie i cant stand. misophonia sucks

  • I can trace it back to third grade or so with my dad throwing peanuts into his mouth. It has expanded to gum (even seeing someone chewing) and it definitely is much worse the better I know you. I am a music engineer and have spent the past thirty years controlling sound. I can't hear the music if there is cracking gum in the control room. I wish the problem had another name. I love sound. But not mindless crackling, chewing and smacking. I don't get angry, but I'm blinded by the helplessness.

  • Thank you so much ! I have had this since I was ten. Thank you. Please email me . I do not know how to send you one. I have questions. I just found out today this is what I have. I am a sane person but certain sounds drives me crazy. Has ruined my life.

  • I have misophonia too. I've been dealing with it since I was about seven, when the sound of birds chirping would keep me up all night crying. Since then my trigger sounds have significantly expanded. I know that feeling that you talked about on the train. It's terrifying to have those kinds of things go through your head. I'm always afraid that I'm going to act on one of those impulses and really hurt someone. Thank you for sharing your story, it's nice to hear other people speaking out about it

  • Thank you singularityrush!! I have the same problem but mainly with people when they are eating. Im pretty deaf in one ear so if i can ill plug the good ear so i cant hear it. or look away. sometimes if someone is eating while talking to me i wont look them in the eye much til theyre done lol

  • Thank you sooo much! I am 14 years old and was diagnosed with Sensory integration disorder. but i knew she was wrong. i searched and searched and then found this and this describes me SOOO well. (misophobia) i get soo mad at certain noises. but i finally am glad i found what is really the problem. if you want to find what is wrong with you, you must do it yourself...

  • The wind blowing into the mic is making me mad at you for filming this in an obscure and breezy location...

  • This sounds terrible.. I hope a cure will be found one day.

  • ok i am 13 and need help! my parents do not belive i have this they think it is some made up thing how can i prove it is not

  • While trying to watch your video, the wind picked up and blew on the mic and that is one of my trigger sounds. What a cruel world we live in when I can't even watch a video about someone else talking about the problem I have as well without hearing the sounds that bother me. Oh well, at least I find it funny. I understand completely though. I've been dealing with it for 14 years or so I believe. I'm glad someone posted a video on YouTube, I'm planning on doing this myself soon.

  • ok i am in the 7th grade and i have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM if i hear chewing, swallowing, whistling, or the sounds S,T,CH,or D I FREAK OUT I FEEL LIKE I WANT TO RIP THE PERSONS HEAD OFF AND SCREAM THE MOST HORRIBLE THINGS then i begin to cry. it is horrible. the way my mom speaks bothers me and i cover my ears when she speaks and she gets very angry with me but she just doesnt understand. and at school a teacher was speaking wwith very sharp S sounds and i began to cry in class!

  • @levikiddd i know how you feel i am in 7th too

  • @lexiegirlcp omg i hate it and its like ruining my life >:(

  • Bravo man. Hilarious your story about the train, I really do know how you felt....

  • The sound of "s" goes through my ear like a sharp needle. I also hate saliva sounds.

  • I am 23 and have suffered from this immensely for at least 13 years. I recently re-located to NYC where I find the problem to be exponentially worse, especially on the subway. I have lived in SF, LA, Melbourne and Berlin, and NOWHERE has been as bad as New York in terms of people flagrantly, disgustingly smacking in public. I had almost forgot about this until it flared up so terribly in this city. Thank you for being the only one to post a video like this, you are brave and I feel for you.

  • I want to be deaf, too.

    4S is ruining my life.

  • have you heard about a new website that has been put up for this condition? soundsensitivity.info

The website discusses the idea of Selective Sound Sensitivity or any other name you would like to name it as, I suggest you have a look. There is a forum there as well where you can join and share your experiences with others. I have also found a way to cope, even better, I have found a way to reduce the reactions, the spark. Its on the forum, GOOD LUCK! R

  • Has anyone ever tried any therapy/treatment that actually worked???? I spent $4,000 in the span of two months.... yes $4,000 in 2 months on "therapy" that was going absolutely nowhere. $2,000 of that was spent on these worth white noise generators that do absolutely nothing for me. It seems like each year I add 1 or 2 new trigger noises to the list. I just really wish there was some kind of way to get relief before I rip m eardrums out or drop dead of a heart attack or brain aneurysm from stress

  • OMG!! Finally!! I knoww itss nameee!!! for likee 5 years i've dealing with trying to tell the people how i feel when I hear someone's mouth sound.... But its worst because the main problem is my father... i am 16 years old and I can't standd him... he has sort of like a "tick" which makes him have this weird sound every 2 seconds (some old people have that) that makes me wanna just rip my hairr off!!! HELP

  • Sorry you have dealt with this! I have it too, for over 30 years. Have you joined the yahoo discussion group "sound sensitivity?" Please do consider it, we've got a great discussion going on concerning how to deal with our reactions to the sounds. Also great website soundsensitivity dot info is a great resource for anyone who has this and also has a forum. It'd be great for everyone with this to join. It helps so much to talk to others with this and get tips to cope. -Heidi

  • THIS IS ME

  • I know how you feel. I suffer from something called 4S and whilst my main trigger sound is sniffing I have the same response as you (imagining hurting the person etc). I admire your courage to put up this video, I'd be so scared that someone would know about my condition and use it against me (as some of my "friends" have done). Thank you so much for doing this, hopefully more people will learn about this awful condition and understand us better.

  • Thanks so much for putting this up. Ever since I was 12 (Not long ago, I'm 14), I've been irritated to the point of extreme aggression. I find that it's worst with those who I'm closed to. Namely, parents, siblings, dogs and the like. It fills me with such rage... The worst noises for me are those of saliva sloshing, lip smacking, eating, breathing and the like. I don't even eat crunchy food anymore, and am extremely self-conscious while eating/breathing.

  • I'm right there with you man. My parents have a picture of me wearing headphones at the dinner table as a child because I couldn't handle my sister's eating.

  • If it hasnt been said before, you need some CBT therapy like ive had,go onto misophonia uk site run by guy,im 42 and have had MS since childhood. What your body is doing is fight or flight cause you have a form of anxiety disorder set in aggression, you need to change how you feel and how you relate to sounds you hate.

  • I can't believe there's so many people that have this too. For the longest time I thought I was just a freak. It started for me around 7th grade I think. I would get annoyed by people sniffling during tests. From there it expanded to lip smacking, gum chewing, eating, heavy breathing swallowing, and other noises. The worst trigger for me would be both my mom and my dad. I'm so glad to know that there are other people with this problem too.

  • Misophonia is still affecting my life .it has been three long years. just the sound of people speaking is so annoying to me.

  • I've had misophonia since puberty, and it has ruined my life ever since, to the point of my father threatening to disown me because he believes I can control it. As an adult, it's put a severe strain on my relationships with people, and I usually hide in my room all day when I'm not attending university classes (where almost all students chew gum).

If anyone wants to talk about misophonia, you can message me. It's important for fellow sufferers to stick together, amongst others who understand.

  • Anyone notice a huge connection with the trigger starting from a father? Such as a father chewing, coughing ect. I wonder what the connection is. Please feel free to message me :)

  • @dreamxoxgirlxox YES! the trigger was my dad, dont know if this will help us fix it but the origin for everyone seems to be similar

  • Thank you thank you thank you SO much!! I've dealt with this (the whole imagining stabbing people in the eyeballs and all) since I was 7 years old. I'm 20 now. Sniffling/chewing/gum chewing/gum snapping, you name it! I've always been told to "just get over it" and it really messed up school and my social life. I always thought I was the only one who had this. But it has a name?!?! It's an embarassing problem, but thank you got putting it out there. Just know, you're not the only one. =)

  • I'm glad this vid has been put up but I couldn't go through the first minute without wanting to scream at the screen, the background rumbling was driving me insane.

  • Thanks so much for this video! I have often been told to "just get over it" or "you are so strange." I have been extremely annoyed by loud eating noises for a long time. It was actually somewhat of a relief to discover that it's an involuntary reaction caused by abnormal nervous system wiring. At least now I know what I'm dealing with - maybe I can find some coping skills.

  • OH MY GOSH!, this is the story of my life!, noises like this literally make me really angre! Such as today, i was in social studies class, and a girl across the room from me had the hiccupps, and i got so angry, that my face turned red, i couldnt concentrate, and was tugging on my hair REALLY hard! I've had it for as long as i remember. My parents say that when I was a baby, we would just be sitting there, then i started screaming,, and they think it was because of this! thanks for posting this!

  • Does any one else also have problems with movements? I have this condition and it's not just sounds for me, I can't stand when people play with their nails, bite them, bounce their knees, play with their hair, etc, and especially rubbing or scratching any part of their body because then I can hear it too.

  • Our daughter has this disorder, 8 years old. Goes into rages, mostly around family and during dinner. There are a few other sounds that set her off, but mostly chewing. It's heat breaking. She can't understand why, but it's real. Thankfully, at least for now it is confined to chewing. We trying to find help. An audiologist in Gainesville, FL University oF Florida. Dr. Hall III. We have an appt with a local children's hospital audiologist, but even they didn't know of this disorder.

  • iv suffered from this since i was a child, peeps eating especially chewing gum makes me furious n want to run.......thank god this nightmare has a name

  • I have Misophonia, i'm 16 and i found out about it a few weeks ago when i researched i because i didn't think my reactions to certain sounds were reasonable and never got why others weren't annoyed by the sounds. The worst for me is coughing sounds especially when my mum coughs and people chewing! I get so angry, even thinking about it makes me mad. I always get in trouble because the noises make me so mad and people think im just being rude to them and disrespectful but it's hard to deal with

  • i feel the exact same way!! im making a doctors appointment tomorrow. there are several sounds i CANNOT take, most specifically for me it is eating sounds. tonight i had to basically run out of the kitchen and i started bawling my eyes out because another person was chewing. i cannot take chewing. i try not to eat around other people, like in cafeterias or restaurants. i totally understand the rage. you try to ignore it and tell yourself you'll get through, but sometimes its too much.

  • Oh I recognize this immediatly! It's horrible!! It started when I was really young. When my older sister was playbacking a song and I heard the smacking sounds coming out of her mouth! AAARGH!! She thought and still thinks that I was exaggerating, but I wasn't. So, when we're eating, the radio is always turned on. But sometimes you can't do anything about the noises. Like certain clicking or repeatedly ticking feet, or people chewing gum or sniffle, I have to distract myself, but it's so hard!!

  • Lip Smacking,Tongue sounds, saliva sounds I hear them constantly! This is ruling my life and Ive had it for only 2 years!

  • Oh my GOD...i CANNOT believe i found this.. thank you..thank you.. my personal hated sound is breathing..(among others) its almost indescribable..my blood literally BOILS..quick as a flash, hot and cold simultaneously.. a (literally) unexplainable rage.. i am 18 years old and have been a sufferer 8 years..8 years i have *never* been without my earplugs. can't believe there are others out there like this. i've seen hypnotherapists, psychologists and numerous doctors. thank you so much for this x

  • I have dyspraxia and this is interesting... I have this too

  • I just stumbled across this...I hate chewing noises, and when people clear their throats. My brother used to clear his throat a lot and I would become so uncomfortable and I just wanted it to stop so I'd yell at him to stop and my parents would roll their eyes thinking i was overdramatic. I Couldn't explain it but I just wanted it to stop. It's not as bad now but i would get ticked off at people slurping coffee or the sound of people chewing their gum. I'm glad I can finally name what I have.

  • Has anyone ever gone to an audiologist to treat this? There's one in my area who claims to treat it but I'm a bit skeptical. I just don't see how I could even not hate that sound. It just doesn't seem possible to me. Almost as if it's a part of me.

  • @iladelph420 how I could ever* not hate....

  • i have misophonia and my dad make it worse it seems like becauuse he smacks alot and clears his though and i hate it soooooooooooooooo much and iv had it scine i was 6 and i am 13 now

  • There is this clicking/ticking sound that is happening that makes me think you are sucking your teeth in the beginning and I get annoyed. I get tense every time it plays that part in the video.

  • I have been talking to someone on this Comment string..... I would be interested to find out how many people can trace this back to the origin.... let me know if you can.

Mine started because my father would tease me by chewing with his mouth open and I did not like him at the best of time.... seems I just keep asociating the sounds with him.

Let me know if you can find the source of yours, I found it took the edge off the reaction, I am able to talk myself down faster. Hope it is a step frwd.

  • Also, I just remembered that once I tried to explain the my parents that I didn't want to eat with them because it evoked images of me harming them. I would always try to sleep through dinner to avoid it.

When I visit them, I try to avoid the situation by asking if they wouldn't mind some music while we eat. That helps a lot.

  • Yes! I just found out today about this condition. I too have been suffering from this as long as I can remember. I too have fantasized about injuring people or myself. Everything that you are saying as I'm watching is verbatim.

Co-workers that annoyed me and made me want to avoid going to work.

I too watched the pickle phobia, but that isn't the same to me, but I drew a parallel. I'm not afraid of these noises, but they annoy me in an irrational way.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!!!! Most of my friends think I'm nuts when i ask them to spit their gum out before they get in my car.

I can pin point my reactions to a certain point in my life, is this the same for you?

  • @sybim I did the same thing before. No gum chewing in my car. I can not tolerate it.

Myself, I remember specifically my sister eating cereal and I started yelling at her to stop smacking. I was probably about 6 to 8 years old. She laughed at me and said that I make noises too. I believe I trained myself from that day forward to be a silent eater.

I think we need to find this forum he mentioned.

  • @coydigga For me it was my step father, he was abusive in other ways, but he would use chewing with his mouth open as a form of teasing me.There are also other noises that he would make that anoy me today like cliping toe nails.

My friend goes nuts when she hears whistling and I asked her one day who use to whistle in the past..... and she said OMG my dad did ( he was also abusive to her)

Seems to originate with a negative feeling towards someone. How do you erase that association is the ?

  • @sybim I don't believe that this can be 'cured', but it does help knowing this is an actual 'condition'. This makes me feel better because I can say to someone, 'I have misophonia' rather than 'I can't stand noisy eating'. It validates it more when it has a name.

  • @coydigga It really took the edge off for me once I realized it was something real and I was able to trace the origins. I have noticed a pattern in the way mine manifests and it is helping bit by bit.

Some people do eat like pigs and snap gum like it's a job .... I don't think we should ever excuse that. LOL

But I would like to be able to tolerate the innocent eaters out there one day.

  • @sybim I agree, some people just lack manners as far as I am concerned. I feel it is rude to eat in such a way, to force those around them to have to suffer the noise.

Like others, I tend to think the same way, 'it's me, not you'.

  • I just found out also that this is an actual condition that other people have! I can't even express how Misophonia has affected my life. For the past 2 years I've secluded myself in my house just to get away from this misery. It got to the point where I couldn't stand to hear most people even speak and I would find myself shaking and crying on the floor. This condition has ruined my life, but there is definite comfort in knowing that I am not alone. Thank you for sharing this.

  • You describe the condition very well. I've had this since I was about 10 years old. Unfortunately, I don't think there will ever be a cure. I always have my ipod on me and I use earplugs when necessary.

  • @iladelph420 Can you remember if it started with someone or something negative in your life? mine started with an abusive father. he was abusive in many ways, but would use chewing with his mouth open to tease me in front of others.

I find knowing the origin has taken the edge off, I just have not figured out how to get rid of the association all together.

  • @sybim I've thought about this a lot before. I think it stems from my childhood when my mother would freak out on me for making sniffling noises at night when I was supposed to be sleeping. One night she even told me that she hoped I would die in my sleep that night. The weird thing is that I never really thought it made a big impact on me. In fact, since I got past the teen-aged years I've had a really good relationship with my mother.

  • Scott - thank you for posting this video. I thought I was alone and mad. My affliction is swallowing and coughing. Whenever I hear it I want to scream (which I usually do when alone - the guy who lives above me must think I'm a freak!) or rip my head off. I also often wish I was deaf. Everything you say I associate with. Absolutely everything. Thank you for your bravery. The relief I have at knowing I'm not alone is overwhelming. I wish you all the happiness in the world!

  • until today i thought i was crazy, and that i was the only one until i made a research in google and starting checking these pages out, i hate it when my family members eat next to me, when they have a glass of ice and shake the glass to melt the ice, it makes this sound that gets me so freaking mad i feel like choking my sister to death or beating my father to death.

  • Taking Tests in class are an impossibility, even the testing center has people in it. Its especially aggrivating if the other person is on my right side so now whenever I eat i make sure that nobody sits to my right side, although sometimes this is unavoidable (driving in cars). I have made it a good social life so far with this condition i have a longterm relationship, and a loving family and lots of friends but i constantly have to dance around this condition with loud music, restaurants Etc.

  • @stevothegreat91 use earplugs! Trust me!

  • Im the same way, im 24 and its been like this for about 16 years now. I hate it, I find it very debilitating and annoying I wish i could just let it go but i cant. Sniffles, Coughs, Heavy Breathing, Chewing, Lip smacking, Crunchy foods, They all writhe my blood. Nobody seems to understand that i cant have a quiet dinner with someone cause to me its a horrible and anxious experience. My family thinks im crazy and ive thought so too sometimes I would never want anyone to have this.
