oh sure.I'm 12 years old, i think il just go outside and cut down a tree and sure it will turn out just like this! lol this was awesome, but anything that the average human could make??
@thebowlzack It hasn't yet. With the duct tape fletchings it is a possibility, far more so than with feathers, but I can always throw a new set on the arrow in a couple of minutes.
The best thing i love about is he made the bow for his dad. The bow is so perfect not because of the Red Oak but it is made with love and will definitely work well :)
@stonenstrop I have not worked osage yet, though I have a couple of staves curing as we speak. It is a little more difficult to work because you have to pay much closer attention to the growth rings. At this time I do not sell bows, though I do sell some of my other projects such as leather pouches.
@stonenstrop My grandpa uses fig tree of special sort to make bow and arrow. That sort of fig tree is very flexible and the brench should not be too fat.
@achborkah no... sight. A 'site' is a location. A 'sight' is a device with which you use to increase the accuracy of your aim. It is also the thing your eyes are responsible for and in turn helps with reading. The funniest thing is, the guy you corrected apologized and said yes, he did mean site LOL
Nice I am making a bow (my first) from a take down tutorial by meanman1998 (last two numbers might be wrong) and it seems alright so far my length for the riser is 46cm width 15cm and hoping with a draw weight of 18kg (quite a lot) if you are making a first bow suggest this but after a while you can aim for this if you just want one then go to abby archery they will set you right hope this helps anyone out there okay:)
your bow is beautifully tillered! it looks simply amazing! this is my 4th attempt at making a red oak bow and im hoping mine comes out nearly as good as yours!
the fletching is infact smart when you dont have feathers or take the time to hand cut feathers down witch takes hrs todo buy hand with a razor the tape you can always just replace it right there on the spot does it have a good flight then synthetics or feather vanes ? :) impressive nun the less
hear not speak English well so Excuse me ... Your bow is very good is a piece of carved wood, right? if it is not mentioned in the video did not translate everything ... Do you have some plans on the model of the bow that I can see? any detailed drawing of the longbow. :)
@david2012slayer The best detailed plans I could point you to would be the tutorial I used at poorfolkbows. There's a link in the description of this video.
thanks a lot for this video, it helps me a lot for making my own first longbow, i'm only 15 now and i am very proud of it, so thanks, and it is sad to hear that about your dad his bow, but again, thanks a lot !!!

@MrAMMiranda Unfortunately not. This bow met an untimely death when someone tried to string it by putting their knee in the center of the lower limb. Bows are designed to take that kind of stress...So now I'm making him another one.
how did you get the arrow to fly with duct tape fletchings? when i made duct tape fletchings and shot the arrow it kept dropping to the ground when the duct tape came into contact with my hand that was holding the bow.
@loadedClownZ How big did you make your fletchings, and how many layers of duct tape did you use? I made a video on how I made these, and I have never had a problem with them firing. I'm still using these same arrows that I made over a year ago, and they work just fine.
@achborkah um.. i cant remember how many layers but they were, about your size but they were round around the edges. I think about 2-3 layers but i already have feathers for fletchings.
@jdm888xbox I'm getting ready to build one for my wife, so I would love to make a video tutorial. It will have to be in several installments, but look for it in the coming months...gotta get my workshop set up first, just moved.
@humansVSgorillas069 It does in time, just like any other arrowhead. I don't keep it terribly sharp for target practice, but it's razor sharp when it's time to hunt.
@humansVSgorillas069 Most hardwoods have broad leaves, though not all hardwoods are good for bows. Research online and learn to identify the trees you're looking for, like hickory, osage, or pecan.
@Thrawn6211 Hickory makes a good stave wood. Make sure you seal it well when you finish, as it takes on moisture easily, which will give you excessive string follow.
A self bow cannot be backed with fiberglass sheetrock tape. A self bow is a bow made from a single piece of wood. Extra material such as horn nocks on the ends, or built-up handles, would normally be accepted as part of a self bow. Some modern authorities would also accept a bow spliced together in the handle from two pieces of wood.
@achborkah Hmmm... really interesting :). I'm just wondering because I am a historian and know of the Wampanoag and Algonquin (along with other New England tribes) uses of shagbark hickory in their bows. Either way though, THAT is a fascinating bow. I'm getting one from 'redmountainarchery(dot)com'. It is hickory backed with bamboo, and has a draw weight of 65 lbs.
@celticbattleaxe hickory can make higher weights which is why its used for warbows but ive found it gains moisture very quickly and can get a bit 'sloppy' do DRY it out a lot
