After a few shots my teacher comes to me and tells me: " You know, you are to exited. Just relax. Think of it like that: this is really important for us and THE HOLE FRICKEN WORLD IS GOING TO SEE THIS."
Now if Leonardo Da Vinci had painted her, she would have really been famous. I think she would have made a much better Mona Lisa. It's a look of truthful apprehension, not a model's shot. Obviously, the story was about the sorrows of being a refugee, so this wasn't a beauty contest, but it's still quite a captivating picture, both aesthetically and contemplatively.
Well, after listening to the story by the photographer. How the teacher explained to the girl that the photographer was there to help, and that taking her picture might help...perhaps that look says..."Will you help us?". It's an intense look, that's for sure...almost some insecurity in the look.
Definitely a well remembered picture. I hope they gave her some cash for all the good it did National Geographic.
With all of the places you been to and the opportunity to come so close with all of those people to make their portraits, you did not really impress me with your quality in handling your camera or composing you opponents technically.
I understand that taking is not as of great return as practically concentrating on the production of your photographs.

Its show the way things were, I remember seeing this image on the 40 years of NG on CD-ROM, which I found. I can 'see' the images much better on screen then in the magazine, I have low vision, and I'm quite 'light sentive' to flashes, I enjoy listing to how these photos are taken, I just re-found my set, after moving.

This National Geographic cover still stands out so much in my mind after all these years! Striking, piercing eyes. Really captured my imagination about other people in other parts of the world as a child.

I can 'see' the images much better on screen then in the magazine, I have low vision, and I'm quite 'light sentive' to flashes, I enjoy listing to how these photos are taken, I just re-found my set, after moving.

What would she do with the money that's 'rightly' hers? NG arranged a special kind of compensation, education for her children, they couldn't give her a vast sum of money, what would she do with it, store it under the mattress to be blown up/robbed? Education is the only way to have a future in Afghan, and without help, her children wouldn't have it. McCurry took her photo, and it was used to communicate that refugees need help. I heard a report that this Afghan girl spent the last 25 years living a very very hard life. Amazing that the model of a photograph that's recognized all over the world not only never made a dime off it, but went on to live a hard life of squalor. Info from BBC: An ethnic Pashtun whose parents were killed during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, Sharbat Gula was 13 and living with the remaining members of her family in Pakistan's Nasir Bagh refugee camp when she was spotted by photographer Steve McCurry in 1984. In 1985 she went into purdah and her face was concealed by a veil. He returned multiple times looking for her. Nat. Geo. finally found her living in remote area of Afghanistan. She is a wife and mother.
