THATS A 2-8-0 RIGHT? ISNT IT LOOKS MORE OF A SWITCHER ENGINE TYPE GREAT VIDEO I REALY LIKED SEEING THE CABOOSES THAY LOOKED GOOD SOME OF THEM ARE JUST AS RARE AS THE ENGINES
@nickman888 it has to do with the pressure build up and throttle. It wants to go fast but the throttle wont let it, so it blows up the pressure by spinning the wheels...I think
Does anyone know if the steam engine is necessarily obsolete, artificially or arbitrarily obsolete. I think it can be made into a heat recycling high effeciency modern engine. It means that if you follow the heat, it doesn't discard it like an internal combustion engine. It kind of recaptures it. Does that sound right to anyone?
@KanineKruizer As it happens; steam will auto expand using it's own heat until it comes to BP of water. It would power stroke 2 times as offen as a 4strk internal combustion engine that actually uses steam to push its power stroke with the much heavier CO2 and N2.150 years of steam engine and then internal combustion. The recycled heat would come with the BP water heading back toward the boiler. Water is the best substance for collecting heat off a hot surface. Steam is a light gas.
@KanineKruizer It's fairly apparent that a pulsing steam engine has been made to disappear. It's almost like it was controlled by aliens. We take it on faith that it was no good any more. I am pretty sure this is grossly wrong. It would probably use some microliters/ power stroke, and might still be gaseous when it gets condensed for reboiling, so it might operate above 212F by some amount and then the heat of condensation would be lost, but all the rest of that energy could be saved.
@KanineKruizer Well anyway lately i've been consider that: if such a small amount of water was used for each power stroke there could be a possibility that it could gain its heat during the injection process. Over all injector heat could be regulated. It could probably be reinvented in a week and then it could be there and better than ever before. i spent some time trying to figure out how i could mess up the modelling logic on this. i think it's something that would change the landscape.
The problem was largely that the train was bound around those curves in the track and it was on rusty rail. It could also have been that the brakes were not fully released yet on the cars as they tried to start the train.
As far as I know she made all the trips between Antonito and Chama without any problems.
Why is the smoke box all rusty? Well these Baldwins always slobber out the stack for the first 50 feet after firing it up. It really creates a mess. After that, no problem. But the smoke box will never look nice, except when first painted.
its a small little engine its carring lots of cars and there forcing it to slip get some sand and get traction for once but still coll vid good ol 315
I think I can! I think I can!

@grizzleybearz282004 Yeah it's a 2-8-0, just looks like a switcher from the camera angle.

@Fireheart528 Back in the day these were the big guns of the freight engines before larger power became available.

What a great video !! It's good to see old 315 chuggin' again. Thank you for posting it .

Good job on the restoration to date. Did they get the sand blowers online since this video, given the constant problems of rust and oil on the rails?

@hypnofan35
How would it be heat recycling? Are you talking about recycling the exhausted steam back into the boiler?
