Joel Salatin is literally my idol and a hero to me. Much of my family is in the agriculture industry (farmers) and before taking environmental and ecology classes with my favorite teacher at my high school I very much supported conventional agriculture and the advancing crop technology. With the help of my teacher and this very man, Joel, my views have changed totally and completely. My single goal in life, at the moment, is to have my own sustainable farm after graduating from WVU. Thanks Joel!
as a recently converted vegan, I completely side with farming practices such as these. I think for the welfare of animals in society, as it currently stands, it is vital that we take baby steps in ensuring that we can help these animals in whatever way we can. If we can eliminate factory farms, it will be a HUGE step in the right direction.
It's all about baby steps. I'm thinking of introducing some dairy/meat back into my diet so I can support this cause.
Joel is our greatest example of someone who is genuine to themselves by doing what he believes in, is so passionate about. He lives his authentic self. All of humanity could learn a lot from this man.
Thank You very much, I agree and love your philosophy!!! I wish everyone would stop being so self centered and realize we are a part of the whole ecosystem. We have a responsibility to do our share to sustain this beautiful world, not rob it to the point that we destroy it. Society is all screwed up.
man he hasss such a awesome lifee wish faring we do was like that every thing but just got cowss! hell ya farming is the best we need more farmers now adays
"respect the design of creation" is of course a false concept (total disrespect of science and evolution), but the result of his actions is OK although limited to a small scope. We need sustainable resource and energy use on a global scale.
@zoltansoos So he's religious. So what? He's right about his practices. I'm atheist, so I disagree with him on the supernatural. But I agree with his farming and his logic.
@wrjamescom Certainly, agree. With other words, his actions are great and that what's count. However, it gets complicated if we try to globalize the concept. Now I am in the fortunate situation that I can afford to pay $5.00/lbs for organic whole chicken (vs. about $1.00/lbs at Costco) and hopefully will be in the position in the future. The way I see, his operation is limited to very small eco niche and globally is not franchisable beyond limited land and consumers.
@zoltansoos We should also note that his methods would be a lot cheaper and much more scalable if not for the government's intrusive and pointless regulations. For examples: If not for corn subsidies and illegal aliens, and other government factors, the Costco chicken would cost more. Salatin's would not. If not for regulations against processing where the animals are grown, requiring large processing facilities, and other government factors, Salatin's would be FAR less. Costco's wouldn't.
May I argue that the evolutionary process is a function of the properties of matter. All organisms of the world, consequently, have evolved both out of matter and with various capabilities of response to the properties of that matter. There is no need for creation.
@Empresarius Woot! AGREED! Thank you!!!!! Evolution doesn't exist!! It is a theory! It isn't real! Realization of a concept is not evolution - it is having your eyes opened to truth (for some it is what they want the truth to be or how they perceive it to be). Changing to adapt to one's current situation or environment isn't evolution, it is adapting! Please define events things and situations appropriately! Evolution does NOT = Evolving! People change due to educating themselves!
@LilMissOpinionated1 Actually evolution occurs everyday. The true definition and true examples of evolution do not include people evolving from primates, if that is what you think it means, but rather a species changing and passing the trait on to future generations. I am a christian and I definitly believe in creation but evolution does exist.
It is a proven and obvious fact that NO meat is sustainable. Dr. Oppenlander in his book and lecture, "Comfortably Unaware" is not afraid to step outside the comforts of telling people what they like to hear and actual says what everyone NEEDS to hear - the truth about the resources it takes and devastating toll on the environment all aspects of agriculture and raising any type of livestock for food involves. It's sickening...
@riccer24 No it's not a 'proven or obvious' fact that NO meat is unsustainable. Pasture reared animals convert inedible grass into viable protein for human consumption, their crap fertilises the grass, it's nature's cycle. The Great Plains supported MILLIONS of buffalo for who knows how long that were eaten by man. Vegans are all ideologues.
"respect the design of creation" was the world designed to sustain our population growth? I don't disrespect this guy for how he farms but he shouldn't put down everyone elses methods because they aren't wearing a stupid hat doing sub-par production and falling into the "green movement" because he hasnt advanced his methods or production.
i am a vegan but I really support the way this guy does things. When I watched Food Inc. I was just amazed, I was saying to myself "this is how it should be done.
Thanks for sharing that thought! This is how it should be done. If I didn't have the option to do this myself and buy from friends who do, I'd be vegan too.
@panchogordo1 I am happy to see that not all vegans are so one sided. Many of them are so hateful towards farmers who raise meat and to people who eat it. I don't sit here and blast hatred to vegans - I love their food and their nutritional value, not to mention the creativity! But, I have seen so many vegans hate on anyone who so much as looks at any animal as a food source it is very nice to see that not all vegans are so close-minded that they can't see truth when it is presented to them.
I read his book "Everything I Want to Do is Illegal." After that, I was sold on his concept. I only wish I had similar food sources around where I live. If more of our farmers were like Joel Salatin, we would be much healthier and have access to much better food.
@HeadTater I thought he was some aging hippie nut until I read the same book. He's not a hippie or a nut. He's actually a smart guy who likes the way nature works and realized we can't really improve on it much.
''food inc'' great dvd rent it,wake up people your legislators are selling we the people OUT! another good book ''the untold story of milk'' by ron schmit- amazon
@Keylicious410 he kills mass amounts of animals and has a huge part in perpetuating an industry that causes immense devastation to the environment... its nice he tries to do it "more humanely" but killing is killing.
@riccer24 So have you pulled your canine teeth in protest? Can't eat vegetables either, that's also killing. The fact that animals are made of food should be your first clue. Wake up and join reality.
I'm not a Christian but I am thrilled that people like Mr. Salatin are using their Christianity to justify Good (capital G) instead of the evil or indifference that most people justify with it. Long live Polyface Farm.
You should see him in Food, Inc. or read his interview in Sojourner's magazine. He's a man who respects the planet and all its Life force. The fact that he believes in something bigger is something to respect. He understands true humility. Amen, Joel.
I am not going into a long debate about this. As i know by experience that it changes nothing.
But its crazy deniing the fact of evolution.
As i said i hold nothing against this man, but he is a extreme believer, and i could post a very long list of very very sick and evil things that have come from religious fundamentalists.
Beware of painting 'believer's with a monolithic brush. There are loads of believers who will never orchestrate the execution of 900 people like Bob Jones. There are scads of Muslims that won't kill like Hassan at Ft. Hood. The miniscule number of exceptions don't justify broad generalizations as severe as you're making. Evil things have been perpetrated by faithless pagans as well.
"the fact of evolution"?? Is it not called...the theory of evolution? It's still a theory, not a fact. Since man has been on Earth, no animal has evolved in the slightest degree. Don't blame belief in God for peoples evil acts.
The fact of evoulution is deliberatly applyed in commersial use on every farm in the world every single day.
We know for sure about micro evolution
it´s being used every day to achieve genetic improvements. and animals have gone through drastic changes in history of man. Just study the different breeds of dogs. They have been actively produced for certain charactistics.
It´s facts taught at 1. degree in agricultural educations, quite simple biology really.
You are not talking about evolution here.....you are talking about procreation. Animals and humans procreate and each species turns into the same species...dogs will be dogs..humans will be humans...Man may create bigger and better conditions of each species but....the condition of man has never changed..
segarza, you're right, evolution is not a fact, it's a theory. A scientific theory. Scientific theories are actually much more solid than lone facts. They are large collections of facts that have been tested and stood up to scrutiny time and time again over the course of many years (150 years in the case of evolution.)
Just in the last few hundred years we've seen the peppered moth evolve. We've watched corn and other crops evolve. You can watch a breed dog evolve in your own lifetime.

@RowanTE, please don't say that about all vegans, my mom is a vegan.
She just feels that she is doing what is best for here body, she doesn't give
