A friend once told me that it's possible Superman also has "super suggestion" -- which means he has the power to influence people mentally into making them not realise he's Superman -- the glasses merely being a kind of trigger. Then again, it's strange to speculate on such a thing -- as he doesn't really exist. P.S. Indiana Jones is Harrison Ford. Superman will -- and always wiill -- be THE Superman.
Ya know, the Superman disguise doesn't bother me when it's done right. In the world of superheroes, a man can disguise himself with a small domino mask that barely covers his eyebrows (Bucky, Lone Ranger, Robin, Nightwing, etc). So Supes wearing thick framed specs while hiding his physique and acting timid is fine. But writers nowadays don't like wimpy Clark, so Kent is a tall, confident dude wearing tishirts (to show off his biceps) while wearing wire-framed spectacles. THATS lame.
Jeez it's just amazing! A simple change in posture, a pair of glasses and a change in octave and suddenly he's a completely different person! When someone says Superman's secret identity is lame, they clearly have not seen Christopher Reeve's incredible performance here, showcasing exactly how and why Superman's disguise is probably the best of all the superheroes.
No one before or since has brought Superman to life as good as Christopher Reeve did. This scene represents some of the finest acting ever seen in a superhero role. Reeve shows why he is the greatest Superman of them all: he slides from Clark Kent to Superman and back with such wonderful skill and sincerity, making the performance BOTH a dual identity and different sides of the same identity. A super scene from a super film. God bless.
