We use Adobe After Effects to mask off parts of the picture and lay another picture over or under it. Feather your mask! it makes the join harder to spot!
jahshaka (google it) is supposed to be a freeware version of a compositing program, but I don't know how good it is with masking...I have it, but there seems to be a paucity of "how to" manuals to get started.
You could also see if you can output your movie file as single frames and photoshop/GIMP(freeware) the required mask/image on to it. Unless you are good at batch processing, this will be labour intensive like you wouldn't believe!

YOu coulde always have shot the empty settee, then put a green throw over it then cromakeyed it.
OR put it into motion and masked around the bits that cross over.
