They are strict, and intended to be so to discourage people from breaking the laws. In Singapore, you can walk alone in the dark and not have to worry about being mugged in the streets, but you can't say the same about places such as America or England. I have lived in both places mentioned previously, and would still prefer Singapore over either of them.

We all have our discomforts or complains but that does not mean our dearest motherland is the one to blame.
We are born here. This is our land. A land where we welcome those who are willing to make themselves Singaporean no matter what race, creed or nation they come from. Singaporeans dont smile and chat in trains too my brother. Remember the first people here are orang lauts. Then friends from far far away came and together we build Singapore. Our land. i agree that this song is more 'singapore' and more catchy( to primary school kids i think).
But let's face it, the lyrics are not appropriate for it to be a NDP song. It's too informal, and also negates Singapore in a way. Nice song though.

it's rather popular in primary sch as primary sch is the only time when they project the lyrics on the screen and the whole sch sing along.. they should do it in secondary and college too
