Most people don't understand the importance of a bass in a band. All they care about is the crazy guitarist moving their fingers fast. Great playing by the way. Nailed it right on!
muse is one of the only rock bands today where you can hear the bassline, thats why the three piece sound like they could be a five piece, simply due to the bass and vocals, and that is what makes muse such an amazing band
Awesome job man. And this was actually really helpful for me. I'm currently trying to learn this one but I was having a bit of trouble with the timing in the verse, so it's nice to be able to watch someone play it. Probably one of the best songs ever.
Great playiing, what effect are you using for fuzz/distortion? I have been using a swollen pickle and been having a tough time getting a full on fuzz sound.
Jesus christ guys hes not gonna give out tabs. its called google. besides its better to learn a song by ear, its funner and much more rewarding. (yes i know funner is not a word but it should be)
i know this is probably an annoying question but how did you get that tone...its sweet. i use guitar rig, could you tell me what effects and how you used them please. Very nice vids. Luv muse, Love your covers :D
a question for all you pros out there: my teacher is telling me that i'm not supposed to play with my thumb hanging over the neck, but instead i should always keep it in the center of the neck...but i play MUCH better the "wrong" way (or so he calls it), and apparently so does Mr. FuryMuso here...
Yes and no. It is possible to play with your thumb over the neck, as many bassists demonstrate every time they play live. BUT, if you want to learn correct technique, then your thumb needs to be under the neck at all times. I have learnt proper technique and to be an actual musician in relation to bass, you need to learn and use proper technique. Other than that, you just learn visually what to play, as opposed to knowing WHAT you are actually playing musically.
@FuryMuso Im going to buy myself a Big Muff in a couple weeks and was wondering what effects pedal where using for this song, not really sure what other bass pedals that where any good where out there. thanks
@krazyates888 your teacher is right, yes you should keep your thumb centered in the middle of the neck is it will allow for more movement and flexibility with your fingers. Almost like an anchor to spring off of. But it also depends on the songs you are playing and whats comfortable for you. I have pretty big hands so its more comfortable for me to keep my hand in the right spot for me. I tend to change my technique with each song.
@krazyates888 Play whatever you feel comfortable with. I've had people nag on me for playing with my thumb over the neck, but I really don't care. I see being just as much as a personal preference thing as if you support your right thumb on the pickups or top string. If you play better that way what the hell does it matter? In fact you should see the way I've held a pen for my entire life. There is no "correct technique" for anything. Whatever you feel makes you preform best, do that.
@krazyates888 On my guitar i use my thumb to mute the lower strings so i can strum the whole thing but only play the notes i want to so i think hes being over critical
@krazyates888 Well I m worse he tells me to put my bass in the same height as I am playing sitting down, but of course I have it at the same height as my ****. At least I don't have to play standing in front of him XD
@krazyates888 Keep your thumb where it should be, and you'll flub less. Trust me on that. You might be able to get away with improper technique for some songs, but if you get into bad habits you'll run into trouble in more challenging pieces.
One important exception to this might be slapping in keys other than E, A or D. Learn about Louis Johnson for more on that.
I think Muse wanted Fuzz Distortion on Bass because Matt has to sing and play guitar, and sometimes even playing Piano, so they kinda I think wanted another guitar without a rythm guitarist. Also, to me, they would be nothing without the fuzz, just try and play a muse song clean.
Muse= YAY!
Hyper Music= WOO!

nothing? Muse is nothing when there's no Chris Wolstenholme's Akai deep impact pedal and Russian big muff and other pedals?

True his basslines are effective, but look, the eq isn't without the distortion. That's what I'm saying.
