here's a story, for those who care to read it. a few months ago i had to go to northern ontario for two weeks as part of a surveying course. every night we partied, but every night i would leave for a little right before the party started. i would drive the open road and listen to this album every night. that was a few months ago, and i only saw this commercial today. this commercial is right about one thing, this is the perfect album for late night driving. i highly recommend it to everyone.
A shame this beautifully filmed ad came out in the dial-up days of the internet... when compressing and uploading 35mm film quality video was unheard of. If anyone has a copy of this commercial on VHS lying around, do the world a favor and upload a higher-quality version that isn't so pixilated and contrasty. Instant karma.

So assuming all extraverts who like a drink or 2, are to be summarily shunned. Is this vid about VW trying to capture the outdoor but non-extravert nerd market ?
@phyuckyeu That's settled then - summarily shunned it is.
Though most computer geeks I know drive Mercs, C30's, SMART, AudiTT, BMW, etc, most tasty motors, but not VW Polo. Now the pleb (bouncer) he likes things simple - that's settled then. He will buy the Polo.
@phyuckyeu Very good points my friend. But i've seen some mighty big men get out of some tiny cars, must have a Tardis setting, ha ha. While we are in Nick mode can i recommend to you "at the chime of a city clock" from mrjiggs (on my favourites).
I saw it written and I saw it say, Pink moon is on it's way, And none of you stand so tall, Pink moon gonna get you all, It's a pink moon, Hey, it's a pink moon, It's a pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon. It's a pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon. I saw it written and I saw it say, Pink moon is on it's way, And none of you stand so tall, Pink moon gonna get you all, It's a pink moon, Yeah, it's a pink moon.
All I have to say is that this is a classy commercial and it exposed me to Nick Drake. I may not have ever heard of him. This is a very good commercial. I don't know why V.W. ad agency is so bad now. Where did the director and writer of this "film" go?
@edmfw VWAG cars worse than american cars? thats a bit of a stretch. my mom's audi may be in the shop every month, but at least it actually starts up and gets there.
I'll probably catch hell for this, but I don't think the music is incongruous to the visual. Even when Nick died he was probably searching to regain a similar experience to the commercial. [1]He was living at home in the country after leaving noisy London; [2]Some (his sister for example) believe that he hoped the excess of pills he took might somehow lift his dark mood; [3]He was listening to classical music which most / all believe reminded him of younger happier days in France. Miss ya Nick.
This song and commercial bring back such a flood of memories from my youth: driving on a hot summer night with full moon and myriad of stars, with good friends and just enjoying company and the beauty of nature. I did not know much about Nick Drake's wonderful music, but I agree, this commercial use of his song is very well done, extremely evocative, and speaks directly to the heart, especially of youth. I am no longer young, but cherish memories.
I listen to the Pink Moon album in my Jetta, and feel slightly cheesy, but I love love this song. This commercial turned me on to Nick Drake, which is sort of sad, but I'm still glad.
I love this song. I'm not angry, but I think it is rather disturbing to see Pink Moon, an emotionally raw, beautiful and haunting masterpiece (subject: doom, mortality) being used to advertise a car...thirty-odd years after the artist has passed. Clearly, it's taken way out of context. Clearly, Mr Nick Drake can't have had a say in this. Why must everything worthwhile and beautiful be turned into an advert for a product? Mangled and debased from it's true meaning? Pshaw!
@saxongreen78 I think his family gave their consent. Sad how this is the only way younger people will be turned on to his beautiful music. Wish he was played on the radio more often. Truly an under rated artist. Very Sad.
@saxongreen78: While commercialism can be degrading to the artist, this particular ad served to expose a lot of people to Nick Drake's music. The music really stood out. I had never looked up the music in a TV ad before, but this was compelling. I immediately bought the album once I learned who it was, and of course it's a fantastic album and it led me to the rest of Drake's amazing catalog. There are many other people with similar experiences who discovered Nick Drake thanks to VW.
I never saw this advert at the time, but it has had quite an impact it seems. I first heard nick drake at an all night concert in 1969, man in a shed, and it seemed as if hed always been around and I got him immediately.apart from the cult following of folk followers it has taken till recently for the world to see what its about. I just wish I d seen him more times at that time.
@derfunkhaus Nick Drake wrote lots of melancholy songs. "Pink Moon" has a lighter melody, but it's actually about the omen that the moon will turn pink and signal the Apocalypse. It's kind of ironic that a commercial about happy young adults driving a convertible on Highway 1 has a song about the end of all humanity in the background.
Here's my take on the ad: it shows 2 couples on their way to a party on a beautiful evening. When they get to the party, it's a bunch of drunks carrying on like louts. The four people in the car exchange glances and it's understood that the party is not for them, so off they go to enjoy some quieter company. Their choice is consistent with the music.
Does the action in the ad literally illustrate the lyrics of "Pink Moon"? No. Was it supposed to? Does it need to? No.
@derfunkhaus Well, I think the message is driving a VW Cabrio is more fun than a party. The commercial is used to sell the car.
I love how Nick got exposure like this, but you have to admit how ridiulous it is the way commercialized culture uses artists to sell stuff; not considering the meaning behind the art/music.
Perhaps instead of "more fun than a party" it would be more fair to say "more appealing than a [loud] party," just as sensitive people might find listening to Nick Drake more appealing than listening to, say, Kid Rock.
I agree that it can be ridiculous to use art to sell stuff if it is directly opposed to the meaning of the art. Jaguar using the Clash was ripe with irony, as was a Republican candidate using Springsteen's "Born in the USA." But I don't think this ad is so bad.
I still remember seeing this commercial when I was just a kid and being completely enthralled by the whole thing. The melody of this song has been playing in the back of my mind all these years until I happened to stumble across this vid in 2009.
It's strange how something so simple could be so memorable.
Most people don't know who Nick Drake is..even less about his music. Also, just because he died (suicide) not long after the release of this album doesn't mean it's about death. There is a lot of speculation as to the meaning of this song other than just the title song to the Album
@jhawk7782 A pink moon may also refer to the biblical passage in revelation, which states in the end of days the moon will be blood red and the sun will not give its light, the stars will fall from the skies and all that happy 2012 stuff. To me its about the end of it all and how he was ok with that happening.
I wanna see Nick Drake playing, why didn't anyone ever tape him. it's a damn shame that no one ever took a video camera. I know the 1st Sony video cameras came out in '68. what an over sight . I would love to see footage of him playing his songs.......if there was any thing, even 8mm, it would have floated to the surface by now.
The song is divine, about Death. He was a genius. The ad is moronic and simplistic and the two things unrelated. No Ad is worthy of songs like these, they are on the other end of the world from advertising. Dont be fooled into thinking they relate..
Are you kidding? The advert is awful... only the music redeems it. You're letting it make you think it's a masterpiece just because of Nick Drake in the background.
@TeeTownSounds I don't know: The expressions on the faces of the women at 30, 48, and 60 seconds is priceless. Maybe you have to lose your youth before you recognize the longing for "yo no se para que" in that.
@McCoolVIDIO Volkswagen means "the people's car" in German. It was set up at a time when most cars in Germany were for the rich. VW's job was to make cars for common people.
i just bought a cabrio and when i stumbled on this commercial, i just thought it was the cutest ever. plus the song is so beautiful. it's on the soundtrack of my favourite movie, which is actually what made me click the link...
@puffyrock2 Thanks goodness for commercials that use lesser known artists, like Nick Drake. I never heard of him until today after seeing the ATT commercial. And I was born in the late 60s! :) I think Nick Drake is going to be selling more records because of it.
I think this might be the best car commercial of all time, and I don't even like modern, small cars like the Volkswagen Golf (I prefer big classic cars). Even so, this commercial still gets to me, and that is because this commercial isn't about the car, it is about the experience. Few things compare to driving along an empty country road by moonlight, and pretty much anyone who has taken a night time road trip will be able to connect with this commercial, regardless of their taste in cars.
This is an awesome commercial. I have been looking for this........glad I found it. The part where the decide to keep driving is terrific. They're enjoying the drive, the friendship, the experience, the night. Love it.
This car is the biggest piece of crap I have ever wasted money on. I own a 2001 Cabrio and it has fallen apart. Every time I see this commercial, I realize how much I love it anyway and go take it out on a summer night with the top down (if it's running). Anyone who sees this commercial and has a Cabrio understands, and probably has this song on some CD in their car. Best commercial ever.
It reminds me of driving with the top down, in a good mood, driving down the pacific coast. Every time I see this commercial or here this song a happy memory comes to mind. I guess it's time to buy a convertible to feel that again.

Don't know if anyone already mentioned this, but it's kind of funny that they chose the song 'Pink Moon' for their "blissful" commersial, since the song is about death.
i remember watching this commercial and i took a bow that before i die, i will relive this commercial in my own experience. and before i turn 27 (im 21 now lol so ive got 6 years to by a volkswagen convertible LOL)
Nick Drake finally received the attention he deserved because of this simple commercial. I hope he can appreciate this well-deserved fame in heaven. So sad he couldn't wait for this recognition in his lifetime.
It seems like the only reason I have now to appreciate media, is because over the last few years, they have introduced me to some wonderful music and amazing artists I never would have known of. Drake's beautiful song, "From the Morning", is also featured in that new AT&T commercial. Talk about easy listening. I also found out about The Moody Blues because of the Visa commercial a few months ago. Timeless, beautiful music. RIP Nick. I suffer from depression, too. I understand his pain.
I never had music or people but when I saw this I bought the car and the CD and felt good about myself. I drove at night and put the cd in and looked up into the sky when the part of the song I remember from the commercial came on.
@jhawk7782 Very much my favorite commercial of all time, even though I hate having a "favorite commercial of all time". VW tried to get me to buy into the system, and it totally worked. I want the thing advertised in the commercial, because I want to experience what the characters in the commercial are experiencing.
@reclusivesage It's funny how advertisements work like that. They can be positive like this one but they can also breed superficial ideas and false images. Too many people take cues about the world from television.
This song and Nick Drake are fantastic. I remember when this ad was out, it always made me happy, peaceful and hopeful at the same time. Then the AT&T commercial came out and I LOVED that song as well, and the VW ad came to mind. I knew right away it had to be the same artist. Much to my hapiness I found it here. I'm hooked for life.
so happy this commercial was aired and allowed me to discover nick drake, aswell the AT&T commercial which made me start listening to him again for the first time in years. Amazing artist with such a sad story
Fun fact, after this commercial was aired more of nick drakes work was sold in a month then in the past 30 years
@aHorribleMess stfu tbh. this is an amazing song, and for an advert it fits fairly well. its nice to see kids being portrayed as something other than boozed up louts.
this ad also brought alot of public attention to nick drake when he was relatively unheard of.
Beautiful song and visuals. The one thing that resonated with me the most (and many others) is how it represented young people not as not drunken, superficial punks but as deeper individuals. it was refreshing to see that as a young person at the time.
Gap "Mellow Yellow", Timberland "The Wind", and the Phillip's "It's Getting Better all the Time" commercials are on par with this one. I could only find Mellow yellow.
I guess I belong to the very few that knew the song since ages but ony today discovered that there was a commercial ;)
I think the advert has a strong message (bit like the 'Think Different' idea that Apple exploited around that time) and I think it was very tastefully done.
love it, can't believe I remembered it from like 10 years ago...anyways 3 more AWESOME commercials... skyscraper staring, tiki barber cadillac, peter drodge toyota, all on youtube, check em out..
@SumNJFella okay so my comment recieves no comments or thumbs up I broke you off with 3 other great commercials and nobody appreciates it, people are such assholes
@wilcoman79 First off, the song was treated in possible THE most tasteful manner you could imagine. Second, this commercial opened up a world of an obscure musician that only a handful of people (myself included) were privileged to be aware of. Nick Drake's music FINALLY got the wide recognition it so richly deserved.
Watch the commercial again, note the artistry, and best of all the message of individual freedom. I'm not one easily marketed to but I do love this commercial.
@tonybklyn I see your point, and i am glad that my generation can now listen to the music of a man who should be addressed as no less than a genius. I must admit that the song at first suited the ad, however, I found it difficult to watch after three or four views. I just wish that the music was recognised without the help of another advertisement. In a way, the song is selling the ad rather than the other way around. Sorry for late reply
I see it quite the opposite. It's the ad that is selling the song in many ways. And yet, in many ways there is such a synergy between the music and the ad itself that it is sometime hard for me to picture them not together.
But nevertheless, it was the ad the first sold me on the beauty of the song and introduced me to Nick Drake's music.
When I first saw this commercial I was a landed immigrant in Canada. Now I'm back to Brazil, but I've never forgotten this ad. I've been looking for this song for 10 years and thanks to youtube and ryanluikens, of course, I found it. Thank you very much.

@TeeTownSounds I don't know: The expressions on the faces of the women at 30, 48, and 60 seconds is priceless. Maybe you have to lose your youth before you recognize the longing for "yo no se para que" in that.

@jsgehrke
lol, i'm not sure what that phrase means. I guess they Are nice subtleties, tho.
TeeTownSounds 1 year ago
@jsgehrke What does "yo no se para que" mean? Google translates it as "I do not know for," which doesn't make any sense.

Why vw caled the People's car?
McCoolVIDIO 1 year ago
@McCoolVIDIO Volkswagen means "the people's car" in German. It was set up at a time when most cars in Germany were for the rich. VW's job was to make cars for common people.

The commercial that introduced me to Nick Drake. Thank god for it!
puffyrock2 1 year ago 2

I remeber that the only channel playing this ad was OLN (now Versus). I would literally watch the channel hoping to see the ad (pre You Tube).

It reminds me of driving with the top down, in a good mood, driving down the pacific coast. Every time I see this commercial or here this song a happy memory comes to mind. I guess it's time to buy a convertible to feel that again.

Don't know if anyone already mentioned this, but it's kind of funny that they chose the song 'Pink Moon' for their "blissful" commersial, since the song is about death.
shaeman 1 year ago 36
@shaeman ...all his songs are dark. But pretty! I heard Procul Harem's "A Lighter Shade of Pale" as a wedding song, once. Yeesh!
handymandan100 1 year ago
@shaeman I think Nick Drake's music is perfect to listen to by yourself in a car driving anywhere.
Daver869 1 year ago
@shaeman I'm pretty sure they chose this song because it's beautiful. Not sure they cared so much about lyrical interpretations.

@shaeman excuseme: how is this a song about death??? i really dont see the lyrics saying that

I understand his pain.

jhawk7782 1 year ago 56
@jhawk7782 Very much my favorite commercial of all time, even though I hate having a "favorite commercial of all time". VW tried to get me to buy into the system, and it totally worked. I want the thing advertised in the commercial, because I want to experience what the characters in the commercial are experiencing.
reclusivesage 1 year ago 2
@reclusivesage It's funny how advertisements work like that. They can be positive like this one but they can also breed superficial ideas and false images. Too many people take cues about the world from television.

This song and Nick Drake are fantastic. I remember when this ad was out, it always made me happy, peaceful and hopeful at the same time. Then the AT&T commercial came out and I LOVED that song as well, and the VW ad came to mind. I knew right away it had to be the same artist. Much to my hapiness I found it here. I'm hooked for life.

Awful. Way to rape an artist in his eternal sleep and molest the youth in the name of the dollar.
aHorribleMess 1 year ago
@aHorribleMess stfu tbh. this is an amazing song, and for an advert it fits fairly well. its nice to see kids being portrayed as something other than boozed up louts.
this ad also brought alot of public attention to nick drake when he was relatively unheard of.

Beautiful song and visuals. The one thing that resonated with me the most (and many others) is how it represented young people not as not drunken, superficial punks but as deeper individuals. it was refreshing to see that as a young person at the time.

I guess I belong to the very few that knew the song since ages but ony today discovered that there was a commercial ;)
I think the advert has a strong message (bit like the 'Think Different' idea that Apple exploited around that time) and I think it was very tastefully done.

rustino08 1 year ago
disgraceful, another great song ruined by a commercial. when will it ever end.
wilcoman79 1 year ago
@wilcoman79 First off, the song was treated in possible THE most tasteful manner you could imagine. Second, this commercial opened up a world of an obscure musician that only a handful of people (myself included) were privileged to be aware of. Nick Drake's music FINALLY got the wide recognition it so richly deserved.
Watch the commercial again, note the artistry, and best of all the message of individual freedom. I'm not one easily marketed to but I do love this commercial.
tonybklyn 1 year ago 4
@tonybklyn I see your point, and i am glad that my generation can now listen to the music of a man who should be addressed as no less than a genius. I must admit that the song at first suited the ad, however, I found it difficult to watch after three or four views. I just wish that the music was recognised without the help of another advertisement. In a way, the song is selling the ad rather than the other way around. Sorry for late reply
wilcoman79 1 year ago
@wilcoman79
