I just attended my first class. I know it will take a bit for the routine to become... routine for me. However, I might have done a bit better following the moves with a little counting. But that's me.
I tried replying, but it isn't showing up. Long story short, you're both right. Neither on-verbal queuing nor facing your class is required. They were simply emphasized by the trainer to help improve the students' experience in your class. My mistake. I retract my statement about violating any agreements. I was wrong. The instructor isn't supposed to yell out the moves. Silent queuing in Zumba classes is key since the students can't hear. The instructor is also supposed to face the class for the majority of each song. Boo.
@mike9ellis I beg to differ...some gyms REQUIRE verbal cueing. It's RECOMMENDED to do non-verbal cueing. Some classes also request that the instructor face AWAY so they can follow more clearly. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the way this instructor is teaching.
@sashia324 Interesting. I'm a licensed Zumba instructor, and I remember signing an agreement that specifies that I am to face the class for a certain % of every song and that I am to use non-verbal queuing. I'm sure individual gyms want to do things their own way. However, if they don't follow the agreed upon Zumba requirements, the instructor is technically in violation of their agreement with Zumba. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but a textbook Zumba class would be different.
@mike9ellis I am also a licensed instructor and I would like you to point out in our licensing agreement where it says that. I will go look myself. I'm from Missouri. Show Me.

@mike9ellis I just did a search of the licensing agreement....I can not locate "verbal" anywhere in document....the only "Face" it finds is "Facebook". Looking forward to your findings.
@sashia324 Wow. I'm not attacking anyone here. Why does everyone in Zumba take things so personally. You don't know my background, so take a step back. I'm just stating what I remember from training. It is entirely possible that these things might just be recommendations from that specific trainer, and I'm confused. I may have just interpreted it as requirements. My training material is at home, so I'll have to check when I get back. If I'm wrong I'll gladly admit it.
@mike9ellis because you are attacking our "passion". I have been instructing for almost 3 years. ZIN since March 2009. Been to convention, Licensed B1, B2, Toning, Aqua & Zumbatomic. Alas...you do not know my background either. I have asked Diane Felkenes if this is a REQUIREMENT or just a suggestion. If anyone would know...she would. Are you familiar with her? Who was your ZES for B1? Mine was Tony & Jessica Witt.
@sashia324 I'm not attacking anything. I'm not pretending to know your background, nor do I care. It has no relevance to this discussion, which I can see is no longer a mature debate about the understanding of the Zumba guidelines. We obviously have two different styles, which is fine.
PS. my colleague looked it up for me. You are correct. Facing the class and non-verbal queuing were emphasized during the training for the students' experience, but are not technically requirements.
@mike9ellis There is no such agreement. I am also a licensed instructor. The Zumba requirements pertain to choreography and mix of music, not whether you face your class and use verbal cueing. It RECOMMMENDED that you face your class and use nonverbal cueing, not required. Every class is different and some classes prefer/respond better to different formats. Useing verbal cueing or facing away from your class does NOT violate any agreement with Zumba.
@dawnmkc You are correct. I was wrong, and I completely withdraw my comment about it being against any agreement. That was my impression, but I was mistaken. It is simply recommended, and I misunderstood. Again, facing the class and using non-verbal queuing are simply recommended methods used while instructing Zumba classes. They are not required.
@mike9ellis Ive just completed the Zumba Training and how obserd that you make a comment like this, i myself, although new to zumba have been a dance teacher for many years and this was one of the questions i asked, each to their own as long as instructors try to follow the main zumba movements... what does it matter so long as everyone has fun. Some people really annoy me how they talk about things that they dont even know anything about,... and you are one of them!!
I tried Zumba and liked it, but it was easier than this one. The instructor kept the move the same for awhile so you could get used to it. This one changes the move every 8 counts or so....more like a routine. Or maybe that's what Zumba is...I don't know, it just seemed easier when I did it.
@sashia324 No, I was at a line-dance event, and before it started, a zumba instructor warmed up the crowd for about 15 mins. She was up on the stage showing us the moves, and we just followed along. She did seem to have a routine, because I noticed some of the moves repeated at certain parts of the song, but there was enough time between "move changes" to get used to them. I don't like memorizing routines, I don't want to "think" too much during exercise.
@SoJerz609 yes...we have a "formula" that we as instructors follow. Same steps for the chorus, verse, break, etc...it all repeats...sometimes with a slight variation or maybe a "fitness" variation as well. You must remember, the video above was after 7 weeks of doing the same routines...you can not expect to "get it" after the first 1 or 2 classes...but muscle has memory and as you learn the song, your muscles eventually learn where they need to go!
She's not a very good teacher...she just worries about herself...that's too bad. I have an amazing instructor she actually gets in the crowd with us and goes over it...it's fun
@joymarieday She's an AMAZING instructor. But I'm glad you enjoy yours. Not every instructor works for everyone. That's why we tell everyone to try lots of instructors to see who you click with.
i like zumba, i have it for my wii and my kids like it, but i also get the same results from music that i like and that is fast paced off youtube, and i can do it while cleaning :-)
@angelfire2angelfire it's not quite the same results ... if you can clean while you're doing the same intensity as a real Zumba Fitness class...you're not cleaning very well *wink* But whatever gets you moving (and shaking) is great!
This Herbeo is the typical stupid overweight American that believes wii or fancy clothes or I-pods will make him look better....hahahaha you are a pathetic looserrrrrrr lmao
I look at this video and laugh the whole time. My sis makes Zumba ( or dance it .. whatever you know what i mean lol) and i wanna do it 2. it looks fun
Fitness is all about what makes you WANT to be fit, in a class, outside, where ever you feel the most comfortable is the best place for YOU to exercise. I applaud the OP for showing us the best place for her! (BTW the wife wants to do that too :)
It's cute to see how people are just so drastically different - specifically in the way they move. Barely anyone is actually moving at the waist, like the teacher. But this looks like a killer workout to me!
err, just a message for those that critisize or take the piss - have a look at the stats for this 2,666,587 - when was the last time you posted a video and if you ever have, what have you got to show for it - sweet FA.
I believe a good instructor will take the time to teach the basics (properly) to her participants so that they can have fun when the pace goes to tempo AND not hurt themselves.
This looks so much fun! I think it's funny how the teacher is so free with her body and is really rocking it, and the students look to embarrassed to shake their booties or do the chest shimmy move haha :)
WTF is this fad about? Eat right, go for a jog or even a walk - go with an ipod it's way more fun than dancing with a bunch of rythmless fools. Or get conned into believing stupid shit like this actually helps so much it's worth the money. People who bought Wii fit...I'm looking at you!!!
@Herbeo Just because it's not your thing, doesn't mean 1) it's not fun or 2) it doesn't work. WHATEVER gets people off the couch and moving...WORKS. I HATE walking...BORING BORING BORING. I want to dance, cut loose, forget life for an hour. Walk out of there sweating my ass off ... have an adrenaline high...endorphins flowin' and a smile on my face. All walking does is leave me alone with my thoughts...which I have enough of all day (and night) long.
@Herbeo Zumba works and it's a choice, some people like to run, I do run, some people like to bike, I bike, I like the gym too. Zumba burns up to 1000 calories an hour. My instructor makes us run, jump, and move for a full hour. Dancing burns calories, tones your whole body, and gets you lean. I agree with sashia, just because it isn't for you, doesn't mean it doesnt work. I love Zumba! This is just one of the workouts I do in my 5 days a week of working out.
@Herbeo hmmm funny cuz i mean i did this in iraq when i was deployed over there not even knowing it was a workout and lets just say i lost a lot of weight and tones my legs and arms ohhhhh and waist.... so before u talk crap u might want to check it iout. the gym is boring... id did it for months and it sucked ohhh not including its not for everyone especially the ones who are injured.... my friend has a hip problem and she cant run or do anything else but she sure can zumba!
@Herbeo Each to their own.............I think jogging is boring....and the sad muppets that do it lmao......but hey like I said each to their own...everyone has their own way of working out or trying to get fit and I say don't knock folk for trying to get fit even if you think its stupid....clearly you haven't a sense of humour and sometimes folk playing about is all part of the enjoyment of trying to get into shape!!!!!!!!!!
@Herbeo I am a busy busy mom of three and I work out, eat right and even walk on my lunch break, but this is a fun way for me and my kids to excersice together!
Exactly it's Aerobics/Salsa mixed with latin music. Looks like a load of fun. That older lady in the green shirt is my favorite. She Zumba's on her own beat and hangs in there...
This video shows what real, normal people are like doing Zumba. Other videos are professional dancers or superfit people. Good luck to all in this video I hope you achieve your goals ...
Call it anything you want, but the RESULTS speak for themselves. My friends are losing sooooooo many inches/pounds because the format is FUN, so they will keep at it.
So it's basically aerobics with Latin inspired moves and music."What is Zumba?" Its just another fad that'll be popular with the dumb sheep masses until someone else tells them what the next big thing is.
@Monsterist76 Who the fuck cares? I mean, really. As long as it encourages somebody to get off of their couch and do something active, I don't see why it should be approached negatively.
Thank you for posting this. I'm headed to my first class on Wednesday so I wanted to see if I could at least get some of the steps down before then, so I don't make a complete ass of myself. I was nice to see a real class in action :)
I've been to both zumba and pilates classes. There's a huuuge difference! Zumba is so much fun, and all kinds of people come.. In my pilates class it's more serious, and it's about pushing yourself to the limit. In my zumba class everyones smiling and just having a good time.
For what it's worth: if you're just as happy running for an hour, it's probably the better option- unless you're going at a snail's pace, you will burn more calories and of course it's free. Plus; with an iPod, I'd say it can be pretty fun too.
@tog1957 Uh, people already pay money for normal non-Zumba aerobics. Because they're not born knowing aerobics? I'm not seeing the issue, here. (Also, Zumba seems to have a much higher focus on butt-wiggling than any aerobics class I've ever participated in! :D)
@tog1957 What sashia324 said about some people needing instruction. Also, sometimes it's more motivational to exercise with a group of people in a class than in the gym by yourself.
The lady up front in the blue reminds me of my zumba teacher. Its funny, I didn't think I'd like zumba because I don't like dancing all too much, or following other peoples dance moves, but just a week in zumba and I've been dancing anywhere that plays zumba like music, including stores in the mall. Super fun when other people join in too.
Yeah...I can't stand the elliptical. I'll take the stair master before the elliptical, and Zumba before the any of those! I haven't tried Zumba yet, but it looks like a fun way to sweat.
@phr00tsnax ...its much more fun when you actually are in a class and not just watching it........I never could stand the boredom of exercise machines, but have stayed with Zumba and am really getting fit..and also, different instructors do different routines and you get all kinds of different workouts....I LOVE ZUMBAAAAAA...
If I follow step by step from the dvd's and working out on carpet and without shoes (bare feet) instead of floor will that still have the same effect as working out on tile floors or wooden floor??
@eliizab3th13026 I DO NOT suggest doing it without shoes. You need support. If you are doing it on carpet, you could put a pair of old tights or nylons over your shoes, it will help with the the traction. They also sell things at dance supply places that go on your shoes to help with dancing on carpet. You get out of it, what you put into it. I taught Zumba on carpet for over a year. It's BAD on your knees...i suggest finding a place with hardwood floors.
That looks like great fun. Is it something that is doable for at-home exercise?

This looks so much fun! I think it's funny how the teacher is so free with her body and is really rocking it, and the students look to embarrassed to shake their booties or do the chest shimmy move haha :)

WTF is this fad about? Eat right, go for a jog or even a walk - go with an ipod it's way more fun than dancing with a bunch of rythmless fools. Or get conned into believing stupid shit like this actually helps so much it's worth the money. People who bought Wii fit...I'm looking at you!!!
Herbeo 7 months ago
@Herbeo Just because it's not your thing, doesn't mean 1) it's not fun or 2) it doesn't work. WHATEVER gets people off the couch and moving...WORKS. I HATE walking...BORING BORING BORING. I want to dance, cut loose, forget life for an hour. Walk out of there sweating my ass off ... have an adrenaline high...endorphins flowin' and a smile on my face. All walking does is leave me alone with my thoughts...which I have enough of all day (and night) long.

@sashia324 I love how the effort gradually gets weakend along the rows XD
whatevenismylife2 6 months ago
@Herbeo Zumba works and it's a choice, some people like to run, I do run, some people like to bike, I bike, I like the gym too. Zumba burns up to 1000 calories an hour. My instructor makes us run, jump, and move for a full hour. Dancing burns calories, tones your whole body, and gets you lean. I agree with sashia, just because it isn't for you, doesn't mean it doesnt work. I love Zumba! This is just one of the workouts I do in my 5 days a week of working out.
luvdolphins074 4 months ago
@Herbeo hmmm funny cuz i mean i did this in iraq when i was deployed over there not even knowing it was a workout and lets just say i lost a lot of weight and tones my legs and arms ohhhhh and waist.... so before u talk crap u might want to check it iout. the gym is boring... id did it for months and it sucked ohhh not including its not for everyone especially the ones who are injured.... my friend has a hip problem and she cant run or do anything else but she sure can zumba!
209evilange 7 months ago 4
@Herbeo Each to their own.............I think jogging is boring....and the sad muppets that do it lmao......but hey like I said each to their own...everyone has their own way of working out or trying to get fit and I say don't knock folk for trying to get fit even if you think its stupid....clearly you haven't a sense of humour and sometimes folk playing about is all part of the enjoyment of trying to get into shape!!!!!!!!!!

Monsterist76 8 months ago 2

This song is engrained in my brain, same song we have in our class. Same moves also. Can't keep up, no co-ordination at all.
It is fun though:-]

I will tell you what Zumba is Areobics with different music! So all you MUGS who pay good money to some wanker in a leotard to learn it SUCKERS
tog1957 8 months ago
@tog1957 Some people need the instruction...and it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO different than the 1980's Aerobics...try a class...
sashia324 8 months ago
@tog1957 Uh, people already pay money for normal non-Zumba aerobics. Because they're not born knowing aerobics? I'm not seeing the issue, here. (Also, Zumba seems to have a much higher focus on butt-wiggling than any aerobics class I've ever participated in! :D)
lampdevil 8 months ago
@lampdevil and let's not forget the shimmy with your shake! ;-)
sashia324 8 months ago
@sashia324 I shall not be forgetting the shimmy-shake, no sir. ;) My hips want to keep going even after class is done!
lampdevil 8 months ago
@tog1957 What sashia324 said about some people needing instruction. Also, sometimes it's more motivational to exercise with a group of people in a class than in the gym by yourself.

The lady up front in the blue reminds me of my zumba teacher. Its funny, I didn't think I'd like zumba because I don't like dancing all too much, or following other peoples dance moves, but just a week in zumba and I've been dancing anywhere that plays zumba like music, including stores in the mall. Super fun when other people join in too.

@phr00tsnax to each his or her own. I personally detest the elliptical...BORING....
sashia324 9 months ago 19
@sashia324
Yeah...I can't stand the elliptical. I'll take the stair master before the elliptical, and Zumba before the any of those! I haven't tried Zumba yet, but it looks like a fun way to sweat.
24WISH 8 months ago
@phr00tsnax This actually looks like a lot of fun. Elliptica would bore me in 5 mins.
sweetbutdaring 9 months ago
@phr00tsnax That just shows that you are a boring person. Zumba is for people who like to have fun.
mmarachel 9 months ago
@phr00tsnax ...its much more fun when you actually are in a class and not just watching it........I never could stand the boredom of exercise machines, but have stayed with Zumba and am really getting fit..and also, different instructors do different routines and you get all kinds of different workouts....I LOVE ZUMBAAAAAA...

If I follow step by step from the dvd's and working out on carpet and without shoes (bare feet) instead of floor will that still have the same effect as working out on tile floors or wooden floor??
eliizab3th13026 10 months ago
@eliizab3th13026 I DO NOT suggest doing it without shoes. You need support. If you are doing it on carpet, you could put a pair of old tights or nylons over your shoes, it will help with the the traction. They also sell things at dance supply places that go on your shoes to help with dancing on carpet. You get out of it, what you put into it. I taught Zumba on carpet for over a year. It's BAD on your knees...i suggest finding a place with hardwood floors.
