The original fx shot more closely approximates the contrast and tonal qualities of the footage leading up to it. In all respects, this makes the cut less jarring and helps to sell the shot. My money is on the classic ILMers, not the assembly-line pixel pushers Lucas has masquerading as ILMers of late.
P.S. On September of 2011, the true ILM (operating under the pseudonym Kerner Co. for over 30 years) officially closed its doors forever. Sad news for movie fans the world over. Thanks, George.
FYI the new shot has been removed and the old one restored in it original state. I saw this at the 30th anniversary screening last night with Spielberg. That new shot has been thrown out.
I’d bet £1.00 pound that dtshd master fucking audio is used on the blueray! the film was mixed and released in Dolby stereo optical for 35mm and the crème de la crème for 70mm was 6track Dolby stereo discrete. Dolby TrueHD should be used at preserving it! But mark my words dtshdma will be fucking used!
I'm pretty sure the DVD I have kept the original scene, but I might be wrong. Anyways it doesn't even look that much different so what's the point of getting worked up about it?
I guess Lucas and Spielberg saw that episode of South Park where they remastered Raiders in a CGI-ied special edition then it turned out to be terrible and killed them.
This is CUNT who said when he’s done making Star Wars films he’ll be making personal films,. what does that FUCKING mean personal films because if this, it the CUNT needs to stop FUCKING up these films because its films like this that raked in the $£millions because we enjoined them and paid to see it again! Now the CUNT is back to his old FUCKING self, at ruining the films we like and he’s getting ILM to FUCK it up for us!
@TheAltair4 Not for bluray so mark my words he’ll FUCKING use it because GEORGE LUCAS is a FUCKING CUNT!
I’m not buying and I can contently live without the FUCKING bluray because all blu FUCKING ray has done up till mow is FUCK films up! It hasn’t preserved the original in any shape or form and if you want to kidd yourself go and ahead and give that CUNT Lucas some more money! Mark my words he'll pull a FUCKING fast one with this!
@MenkeriosAndemicael I agree, but also the first time I saw the new cgi scene I didn't feel vertigo like in the original one, I thought about it and that's because the camera follows the car instead of just rotate the view, in the original you could see that the cliff is deeper and deeper because the camera stays on top of the scene, the new one just doesn't give me the same feel of amazement the original one did, It was one of the most spectacular scenes in Raiders and I felt heartbroken.
Why why why why did they mess with raiders more? I was okay with the few gaffes removed for the DVD, but this is too much. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
@Paul07791 dude your a fag, it looks more real, its barely been altered. You trolls just like bitching everytime a movie is slightly altered. The original shot makes me sick.
lucas must have thouhgt- "hmm, i wonder how i can make more money? i know i will make one of the best scenes in one of the greatest movies of all time look like sh*t!"
The whole scène is CGI and looks good to me. But it's only the shadow of the truck that was changed. Any way, why didn't they change the scène in Doom where the priest Falls in the in Croc lake. That part looks fake:P
The original shot is a miniature truck (and guys) composited over a matte painting. The new one is a full CGI landscape that looks worse the more you see it, and the larger the picture is. The big giveaway is the added camera "crane" movement, that doesn't match the '80s feel of the rest of the film. It's a nitpicky thing, sure, but the new shot is also just awful.
@sushidroid I completely agree with you. Raiders doesn't need any alteration, but If you are making alterations just use special effects and camera movements that at least match the year the movie was done, How can two professional filmakers like spielberg and lucas don't have this common sense?
Were there any other scenes from "Raiders" this version went back and changed?
By the way, I seem to remember reading a few years back that Lucas wanted to give the Indiana Jones movie the "Special Edition" treatment and Spielberg said he was against it. Either he had a change of heart or Lucas just went ahead and changed it anyway...
I think there was at least one subtle change to the DVD.
Remember the scene where Indy falls into the Well of Souls and comes face to face with a cobra? During filming, a sheet of glass was put between Harrison and the snakes for safety reasons. The glass was slightly visible in some shots, but I heard that it was digitally removed for the DVD.
why? what the fuck was the point of that? was it really worth their time, to go back in, and re-do that shot with half-assed CGI just so it can look exactly the same? did they do that just to fuck with us?i really dont understand it, someone explain this to me.
This is not in the DVD version, only on the USA-HD and SCIFI-HD airing. A complete non-issue -- move out of your parents basement and get a girlfriend already!
I don't know what you are all complaining about. What's the difference between the new version and the old version? The only difference I could see was that new version had sharper color and placed a shadow of the falling truck on the cliff wall and I imagine they made the falling man look a little more realistic. Other than that, looks the same.
I think they should release a Indiana jones DVD box-set with the original untouched raiders of the lost ark and a new enhanced version with stuff like the one this video that would be cool but only if they also had the original version.
the original is so much more impactful. as a side note, first time i saw this, i lost interest in the film. it's cgi crap and im really getting tired of seeing it everywhere

original is fine, why change it?
didn´t Spielberg say he won´t allow new digital effects in his former movies´ re-releases ?

A "very flat and undynamic shot"...? Your brain is flat and undynamic, just like your endless remakes and like zero original material! Heh!
Heh, yeah, you soooo know depth and dynamicism! Why don't you be quiet!

Strangely enough, when USA showed the film last month, I'm pretty sure it had the original version of the shot in it. Maybe I'm wrong?
