Thanks, I asked the restaurant owner here and he said he uses red lentils/ masoor dal. I find toor dal overpowering on its own. I like it mixed with other dals. Thanks for the tip
Hi Chef! I made this recipe and it came out so well... Thanks a lot. U are amazing ahd i have been watching ur videos quite constantly/ All are lovely! Regards and Wishing you a very happy new year!
@irfand4 yes you can add coriander powder. But save the garam masala for last. It will burn easy. Sprinkle it on the dal at the end, boil a few mins, then add chopped cilantro.
hi chef, i ve been watching ur videos for last few days, and suddenly i have become a great fan of u,no other indian videos are as good as urs. keep it up .all the best.
It really helps to know what kind of dal you use...Especially for beginners. I believe you're using split moong/mung dal.
Yellow lentils can be either toor dal or split moong (mung) dal. After many months of experimenting I've learned that moong(mung) dal my favorite for tadka dal and most likely used at Indian restaurants.
@ItVeganAtGenesis Toor dal is the most commonly used dal for this purpose. I personally prefer it because it has a milder taste than moong dal which can sometimes overpower your curry accompaniments.
hello chef, i always wanted to learn that tadka dal actually i don't know wht is the real tadka......but u make me learn .i and my friend both r thankful to u.
Great recipies chef!!! He makes really good foods, have tried many of them,& they are delicious!!! But I'll never have the food made by him, cause his mouth seems to be watering always...

no red powder chilly????
RafathUllah 7 months ago
@RafathUllah I may be wrong, but I think the real aromatics from the red chillies will come through better than powder chilly.

Sorry chef what is the "hing" you added after chopped onion at 2:06? Must 've been some kind of powdered spice?
Great video as always...
Rudadiz 1 year ago
@Rudadiz
Hing means Asafoetida.
For other words, you can google "Hindi words for spices".

what is toor daal?
54qe3 2 years ago
Dal is basically a dried pulse (pea/bean). To get them looking like these you have to soak them, then boil them.
Toor dal is also called pigeon peas, and lots of other names too! I have made tarka dal with other types of dal btw (e.g. chana dal).
Dal and Chapati mmmmmmmm.
