I have either a 83-85 VW rabbit diesel ls that im gona drive now and it gets above 45mpg, I dont know what year it is because its my grandpas but he said i can have it. Im hoping its an 84 or 85 because turbo kits for them are under $900.
I've got one of these (or, to be more precise, my dad does for right now, probably gonna be a hand-me-down for my first car) love 'er immensely. Only got a 4-speed gearbox (manual) though. BB's a little worn round the edges, but she'll still run like a top all day long, and is miserly on the fuel.
Me and Dad love VWs, although I wish I could say the same for ma....
my dad has a '81 truck gas he plans on selling it and i plan on driving it! so were kinda at a stand still cus i love my volks but he says he'll buy me a pt cruiser if he sell it and i like my pt's too! sooo....
As most all vintage VW owners know, you feel special driving down the road knowing everyone that sees you is thinking one of two things: "...I wish I still had that old VW..." or "...I always wanted one of those..."
We have a hydrogen booster that we are going to add to ours. A guy in fla is getting 88MPG with a HHO booster on his Toyota. Check out Smacks boosters on youtube to see what i am talking about.
HHO=H2O=Water. You can pass a crap ton of current through water to break the covalent bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen and then burning the H2 gas. The only problem with this is that it's a net energy LOSER. It's a cool idea though.
@rickyzoller check the burn characteristics on Hydrogen versus gasoline or diesel.. hydrogen burns much much much faster than either of those fossil fuels. Thats where the secret is at.
@erice1984 Of course atomic hydrogen gas burns more quickly, it's in a gaseous state and its energy density is much lower than any liquid fuel of any kind. The only thing I'm saying is that you can use a mixture of hydrogen gas and any type of combustible fuel together to increase efficiency, but a solely hydrogen-oxygen powered car is not feasible because of how much energy is required to create the two substituents. Takes more energy to split off hydrogen than you get from combusting H2 & O2
you might want to import it. europe is full of mk1 golfs (rabbit is a golf modified for the amercan market). I also have a 1.6 diesel mk1, 1985, and, besides being a little loud, theres nothing wrong with it. Goes fast, spends little, cheap to maintain and is spacious enough, more than other city cars
I got a 1.6 diesel pickup. gets over 42 MPG on pump diesel: 37 ish on bio-diesel. Wouldn't trade it for a new hybird (41 MPG) or a new TDI (38 MPG) 1/2 as complex, twice as easy to fix. Why buy new??
we love it! the engine has been rebuilt and the clutch replaced all 30,000 miles ago. we're getting really crappy fuel mileage right now (first tank, 22mpg) but we expect it to go up to around 35-40 mpg when we learn how to drive it. we keep starting off in 3rd, and killing it.
my wife chose it. i found it, but it's her truck. we're doing a total restoration and custom paint.
I was driving down the road the other day and saw a girl driving an '81 Rabbit Diesel and I thought, "Lucky girl". LOL! I knew it was an '81 because the license plate was "81 POS". My mom drove an '81 Rabbit Diesel till she died in '95 and that car never let her down. Ever. She drove it like a tractor. Plant accelerator to the floor, when the car doesn't go any faster, shift, plant accelerator to the floor. lol!

i want 38 seconds of my life back!!! there is completely no fucking way that there should be a diesel engine in a volkswagon or any type of car diesel is made for more power and pullin!!! what the fuck are you going to pull with a 1.6 diesel engine in a volkswagon a radio flyer wagon???
Tell that to the Audi race teams that won the 24 Hours at LeMans with their R10 TDI (and have been owning everyone's ass ever since it's debut). And to answer your question, my 1.6 VW diesel could probably pull the stick out of your ass.
@jaysk8te hey stupid, they have 10 sec crew cab diesels that are driven to the track. BMW now makes a 155 mph 4 door diesel car and You have not been paying attention to Lemans obviously.
thise engines can basicaly run on veggy oil stock.. we did it at my votech shop on one of those and a cummins. but im not sure what all they did to the cummins out side the shop to make it run on that.
Technically, any diesel engine can run on veg oil stock without heating the oil...you will wreck you injectors...but it'll work for a while. I have a parallel heat exchanger with an effectiveness of 90% and will get the oil over 200 F in order to achieve a good viscosity to get the fuel to atomize just like the light diesel.
yea.. idk what all they did. but i know we have one little thing that i guess changes it but the teachers kinda been keeping that to himself. and yea.. i can see it wrecking the injectors. i guess just clean them out with something every some hundreds of miles.
just make sure to replace all the fuel lines with viton otherwise the veg oil will turn em to much ;) YOu may also want to get your injectors cleaned as one cylinder is not spraying correct causeing the louder knock
Nice, i've got the same car only mine's dark green. i've only got the 4 speed trans though. If you wanna make it sound like a sweet ass car from the fast and the furious, just straigh pipe it by hackin the muffler off. my muffler fell off and the car sounded cool as hell. Enjoy
Good plan and very nice sounding engine!...Just like mine. I'm also rebuilding a 1.6 vw diesel too just to see how it performs afterwards. Keep it going!
my dads friend has this and hes giving it to me pretty good deal eh? but its needing a new fuel pump and thats it!

The best I ever got on mine was 54 MPG. It's a 'CR' code mechanical lifter normally aspirated engine.
