  • nice metronome

  • You shred dude. Cheers!

  • the snare sounds killer! actually everything does, and you can still be heard clearly over it all! hot damn!

  • Thanks for posting, this is great. And like others have said, that snare sounds GREAT. There is something so organic about afrobeat, it's just so amazing. This was explained very well, too. Thanks again.

  • Love it! at first slow and broken up into it's components i wasnt so sure then u sped it up and bam! there it is! Thanks I'm now gonna attempt to do this on a computer...shud be interestin

  • pretty awesome the double on the kick help clear out some afro beat concepts nice thanks great reverb !! is it natural or u added that? any who check my videos and leave a comment if u dig .. later

  • me gusta el sonido de la tarola

  • Take that Expert Village.

  • oney and twooy and three-ey.....class man

  • Bad ass funky drummer. I can hear some old school Jame Brown/Fela/Garaldo Pena, Bernard Purdy in those sticks and those licks.

  • thanks so much for putting this up.

  • damm....sweet snare

  • anyone know how to get a bass drum sound flat and sharp like his one? would be appreciated

  • your snare is a killer dude!!! nice stuff..

  • True. That snare is poppin

  • awesome !!! Please, please, more afrobeat lessons!

  • great...as an ex- Fela Kuti cohort..i think you did a great job..dont worry about the critics......Kaleta

  • quality teaching, thx

  • Polymetrically speaking, this is not "3 over 4". A 3 over 4 would have a 12 pulse, which is a completely different feel than the straight 4/4 we have here.

If you are going to criticize, I suggest you learn to communicate properly first.

  • Yeah no kidding.... I was trying to figure out what yack was talking about....

  • I totally agree with lesmizzle. There's no polymeter here. It's a simple 4/4 african pattern with everything falling on semiquavers and a cycle length of one bar. This 'bullshit nerdy' pattern goes back hundreds if not thousands of years. Are you the one to show them africans the error of their ways?

  • Sounds great!!!

  • yeahhh you're right about that feel it's like anybody can groove to that. Good stuff bro

  • can you play another pattern for me just as good as this one .

    tony

  • dreamer can you play another pattern for me

just as good as this one .

    tony

  • Awesome job bro! Yeah, that's why I think so many drummers get so screwed is because their so worried about speed and not accuracy! When, really being a drummer is all about being solid and accurate! Great job! Your snare has an awesome attack!

  • Big

  • It just hit me, the snare and hat part is a Soca or Soul Calypso. I like the bass drum part better than the part I learned for a Soca which is on the quarter notes. Nice job my man!

  • Amazing groovin'

  • Very well done. Keep it up.

  • woow!

    really cool rythms

    thanks for teaching so well!!!

  • Sat down and played the beat-it sounded great.

Thanks for the lesson!! I am grateful.

  • its not reggaeton "jack" Afrobeat!!

  • That's a great groove. Do you play in a band?

  • you really broke it down. this helps a lot!! thank u!! and ur drums sound awesome!

  • nice lesson...well done

  • aww man well taught Great grooving !

  • Sweet sounding snare! What is that?

  • Nice ECHO!

Are you playing in hall? I gotta try play these with drums tomorrow.

You are a really good musician, and that's from another musician to you. btw..Where is Kutztown, is it worth of visiting?, I'm coming to america in august....

    Larry, Finland

  • I am in a practice booth, but I left the door open b/c nobody else was in the building. Kutztown is a small farming/college town in Pennsylvania. If you are near here, you are moer than welcome to stay for a few days and we can shed. Seriously. The town is in themiddle of nowhere but it has some great character that is hard to find elsewhere.

  • Dude, welcome back! That's one wicked Fela beat. Tony Allen would be proud.

And that snare sounds KILLER. What model is it and what (if anything) are you using for muffling?

    Keep the vids coming.

  • Haha. Thanks man. You gotta love youtube. That snare is a big fat Premier chrome shell. I will get the specific details soon, but that is my new revelation....chrome snares, older models, give the biggest sound. Also, to get some reverb, I am practcing in a sound proof booth, but I left the door open, which opens into a big tile floored room in a music building at a school...so lots of reverb. Thanks for the post. I got a new camera so lots of vids to come.

  • hey- always searching for afrobeat lessons online and came across this. I play in an afrobeat band, called Chicago Afrobeat Project- yeah out of Chicago. anyway, very nice lesson here. no one really breaks it down so its nice for you to show others whats going on.

interestingly enough im going to be real close to you in a couple of weeks. were playing Musikfest in Bethlehem on Aug. 6 and 7. please come out. would be great to share ideas as well.
