A great thing about this is you can tell the performers were given the liberty to go off script and put things in their own words. Now you see them stay on script and a lot of times it doesn't sound natural at all.
Funny thing about this is that as a kid, I cheered for Hulk. As an adult, it's obvious that Hulk was crossing the line over and over again by putting his hands on Elizabeth and pretending to be the nice guy. I feel like Hogan was the true villain of this story.
1:37 I can remember like it was yesterday. I was in the 2nd grade and always liked Macho Man more than Hogan. I was so glad when this happened. Just wished Savage had won the match at WM 5. He carried that damn match.
Obviously, Hogan and Savage will never be considered great "actors", but look how natural and "real" their confrontation is!
You could argue that the execution is a little sloppy, but their cross-talk and the raw emotion in this backstage segment is part of the magic that's missing in today's wrestling. Everything today is scripted to death: One wrestler says his lines then waits for the other wrestler to finish his lines.
So contrived now, and people can see through it. These were the days!
I remember this when it originally aired and the realism just sucked you in. When promos had style and content and the wrestlers came up with them on the spot. Most of the young guy today haven't gone up and down the road and paid their dues for years. They can't even cut a decent promo or call a match in the ring without it being written for them in the WWE. Where has all the style gone?
This was an absolutely amazing angle. The realism they put into it was incredible. This was when Vince gave a damn about wrestling fans and not like today where he cares only about the under 5 audience.
@RSXemperor85 I agree. Case in point at 0:47 where Savage turns his back to try to keep his cool. Little things like that can make a big difference when telling a story!
@urbangirl0917 So what brings you to watching something you claim to be above despite not being able to muster a comeback that doesn't make you sound like a 6 year old?
Hogan was big because he was just pick(by scriptor and wwf) to be the one without a really poor wrestling talent like Goldberg and this is sad..Yes il love hogan at the time maybe when i was 8,9 max Cmon after this age you have to realise that he suck!!??..Hogan as way to many chance and comeback, yep its a big name but people are a bit retard(not just for wrestling but for all in our society)
@urbangirl0917 lol you're stupid. Do you watch TV and go "this is so fake, so staged?". If not, drop your fallacious argument. Also, a good knuckle on the brow bone, right where a woman would arch her brows, can bust you open good. There's something called "working"; anyone can throw a real punch but it takes talent to work one. Stop me if this goes over your head. Wrestlers like Foley and Hart would use the brow technique to get color but most just carry a good old fashioned razor blade.
@JohnLawrenceCobraKai lol You think you're funny making fun of the dead? Well, it just proves you're a disrespectful punkass bitch. Randy Savage was a far better performer than Hogan. I can name 20 matches right off the bat that Savage was in that were so much better than any match Hogan was in.
@JohnLawrenceCobraKai Oh look everyone, we have a mark here who thinks Hogan bodyslammed Andre the Giant all by himself. By the way, that match at WrestleMania III with Andre is the most overrated bullshit in WrestleMania history. Savage/Steamboat earlier in the card was a far better match and stole the show.
@JohnLawrenceCobraKai Are we still a mark, and don't know that Pro Wrestling is staged? Yeah, you're the only one laughing at your jokes like a nerd, because no one else cares.
@JohnLawrenceCobraKai This we is you, my uneducated friend, and I asked you a question that you didn't seem to answer, because it struck a nerve. Keep laughing by keyboard at your jokes, because it doesn't do nothing besides make you look ignorant.
@JohnLawrenceCobraKai Christian? What the hell does Christianity have to do with anything? Going off topic I see. Take a grammar lesson? You should practice what you preach, Mr. Laughing Out Loud!
Imagine John Cena and Randy Orton trying to cut a back and forth promo like this with the same intensity and passion, its such a shame we'll never see wrestling like this again RIP Macho
This shit went hard BITD. Great heel turn by Savage, and it's better he goes at Hogan here than if they just had him cut a promo on walkin out on him. You knew Hogan was gonna win when they fought, but this angle was golden
MAchO mADDnesS OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YYYYYYYEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! R>I>P BETTER THEN HOGAN BET THAT
i remember watching this on pay per view back in the day. i do remember though this was the first time i heard hogan say his real name. its not in this vid though but he kept saying "terry" over and over. i haven't seen this in a ong time.
Macho Man: Curantly chillin having a 1 on 1 with beezlebub in a match. Squashing him :) and repeatadly Maaaacho Elbowing him whilst snapping into a eternal slim jim Owwwww yeaaaah.
@Luis2899 - Not really. There was true animosity between these two guys. Almost up to Savage's death, he wouldn't speak to Hogan. Largely, bc of Elizabeth.
The weird thing about watching these segments again today after seeing them as a kid: Hogan is totally the heel. Not just in this angle, but in almost all of them. His opponents almost always have a legit reason to be pissed at him, and Hogan comes off as an arrogant ass.
@cbpointblank Yep, Hogan saying talk some sense into him is totally coming off as the heel but Macho Man physically abusing a woman is coming off as the face, lol. Of course considering the genetic cesspool that is the Springer Generation I shouldn't be surprised. I expect such from them. They cheered Austin for beating up women when they wouldn't drink a beer with him, or DID drink a beer with him so Hogan conveying a positive message obviously has to be "fake" and therefore heelish.
@mongoose704 Ha, the "Springer Generation". I'm in my 30's, and I've been watching wrestling since 1983. Look back at Hogan in the 80's. He acted like a heel a LOT. He cheated often (back when only heels did so), used foreign objects, etc. When Sid eliminated him from the Rumble, Hogan's character reacted like a spoiled child - even though Sid had done exactly what the rules of the match called for.
@mongoose704 That's what makes Heenan and Ventura's commentary from back then so great today. They're actually correct in a lot of what they say about Hogan during those matches, and the babyface announcers constantly cover for him. That's another reason why it's so great when Hogan finally turns heel in 1996, and Heenan is screaming that he's been telling people for years what Hogan is really like.
@cbpointblank Yes I think thats why he was so over. Think about how over all the heelish faces were. Hogan, Austin, Taker, Cena (2003-2005), Michaels, Flair, The Rock, Orton. All go over as faces by acting like heels.I always found that intresting.
I wish that WWE could put together storylines and segments like this today. I've seen this segment between Macho and Hogan many times over but every time I watch it I can truly feel the friction between these two.
Months before this happened when the Megapowers started and Hogan said that Elizabeth is our manager now,Ventura said,"There's gonna be trouble McMahon".
Great acting by Macho Man, I was only 7 yrs old at the time but what Hogan was doing was wrong, leaving macho during the middle of a match.. I wanted Macho to win at Wrestlemania 5 , Macho and Roddy Piper the best acting in wrestling history
You know. We really DO NOT need wrestlers feuding every week, gaining small victories over and over. This feud had been built slowly and this 1 segement made me more excited for a Wrestlemania match that I never saw live than anything I ever grew up with in the last 10-15 years. I can't believe how much better Wrestling was. It's scripted, "fake" , but damn this segment had REAL emotion. It seemed real even to an adult. Better than anything the WWE could even dream of putting out now.
Now lol i know wrestling is mainly fake but either Macho Man and Hulk Hogan i really serious in this situtation or there really great actors! I mean am I the only one that feels this way? Look at how Macho is acting and look how he's punching Hogan in the head that shit look real! on me lol!
wow you can feel the drama and intensity in this scene. compare this to any so called "heat" today's wrestlers try to generate when they are mad at each other in a promo.
i remember seeing this when i was a kid growing up in the 80's. Every fan knows that pro wrestling has certain seminal moments--defining moments. Hulk Hogan vs Macho Man Randy Savage was such a moment. It changed wrestling. They were already big stars, but after this, both of them were launched stratosphere of wrestling super stardom.
Lmao @ beefcake!!! Where was he going with that? LOL! I was with Hogan all the way cause as a kid I felt Hogan could do no wrong. He was a cultural icon who told lil' kids to say prayers and eat vitamins remember? I thought Savage was a friggin' jerk. I mean, Hogan would never lust over sweet Elizabeth would he?
my GOD! As a kid I definitely couldnt appreciate the brilliance involved in this angle. This is just amazing, from top to bottom. Emotion, acting, edginess. Bravo. You see how hard he threw Liz????
@jcp1977 sometimes i wish people like you would get of these videos. hulk rules dumb ass. he probably ruled your mother too. maybe he's yo daddy bitch
I wish Macho had hit Hogan even harder with that belt. Hogan couldn't let Macho be the champion and stay out of it. He just had to be a part of it all. Hogan is, was, and always will be a piece of shit. Hulkamania is dead. Get over it, Puke Hogan.
At MSG in a non-title match Savage beat Hogan via a count out in 1989. Sherri thought he was the new champ & put the belt on Savage. Thats the only time I remember Savage winning against Hogan, I think it was a steel cage match.
Oldschool rivalries looked damn near real. Lots of heavy emotion. WCW, WWF, ECW. Truly amazing promos. Come this century and everybody are in some Elementary-school-caliber cliques or the stereotypical, boring 'lone wolf' promos without a lot of inter-character tension. Note the whole WWE angle right now with Sheamus, Edge, Cena, Randy Orton and Jericho. Just none of the tension that we used to see.
2:05 Poor Liz.

@RSXemperor85 The whole business has changed though.
Savage worked for years, and became the Macho Man.
Now they don´t work and really learn the business like they did.
This is because of Vince...when I was little everything meant something. Even if a headliner was against a jobber.
SNME...Was brilliant.

From what I remember he starts punching him in the face again after they pull him off of him, that's what I meant.

It was cut off before Macho started punching him in the the face.

I wish Macho had hit Hogan even harder with that belt. Hogan couldn't let Macho be the champion and stay out of it. He just had to be a part of it all. Hogan is, was, and always will be a piece of shit. Hulkamania is dead. Get over it, Puke Hogan.

This is seriously the best angle of all time. Macho is like SSJ Vegeta-

@ryogaskate lol that's awesome. it's easy to picture macho as vegeta and hogan as goku.

Hulk Hogan was looking at Elizabeth with lust in his eyes, I saw it. Savage was 100% right in what he did.

I hated Macho for YEARS after this...and , for what it's worth, Hogan carried the Mega Powers

@mrhollister09
At MSG in a non-title match Savage beat Hogan via a count out in 1989. Sherri thought he was the new champ & put the belt on Savage. Thats the only time I remember Savage winning against Hogan, I think it was a steel cage match.

Hulk Hogan and about 10,000,000 other guys had "lust for Elizabeth"!

Oldschool promos > Newschool promos.

This just shows you that this segment itself is better than wrestling today
